Winter - the BEST Season!
Bonnie Goble, Director
Homework problem? Call the Homework Helpers!
January 2013 marks the second year of a very
successful program at the library for students in
grades 1 - 5. Designed and run by Fredricksen
Trustee Mary Anne LaPorte, Homework Helpers
consists of five professional educators. They are
available every Thursday afternoon during the
school year, at 3:30 p.m., in the library’s lower lobby.
This one-on-one program pairs one educator with one student for up to
an hour of concentrated “drop-in” help. In the past calendar year, this
program provided 72 student sessions.
Students and their parents are welcome to drop in for tutoring, support with
research and report-writing, and help with using the library. Students bring
their school assignment directions. A terrific program which has proven
invaluable to the students it serves.
January marks the beginning of public voting for “Simply the Best.”
Fredricksen has received this award in the “Best Library” category for eight
years. A ninth year would be truly spectacular! To vote, link to the ballot
from the Fredricksen Library website.
And then there’s our outreach programs…Fredricksen has teamed up with
PennState Master Gardeners, Yellow Breeches Watershed Assn and the
Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay to provide workshops on how to garden
with nature. The series lasts from March till October, and registration
begins February 1. Also for gardeners, Fredricksen has seed saving (and
exchanging!) in our focus, as a joint program with Slow Food Harrisburg
on March 17. More outreach upcoming: Central Pa Blood Bank First
Friday blood drives at Fredricksen, Read Across America, in which men
from our community read to children at our story times. Add these activities
to Fredricken’s already brimming event calendar, and winter looks better
and better!
Do keep warm…our Coffee Corner in the lower lobby can help with that.
We even serve hot chocolate!
