Greetings from the office of the principal~ I am profoundly honored to be the new principal of the Greater Nanticoke Area Elementary Center. It has been a true pleasure to meet and get to know the children, parents, and families that make up this wonderful community. I feel privileged to be part of a teaching team that is deeply dedicated to providing the best possible education for every child in a safe and nurturing environment. I am committed to preserving our tradition of school pride and equally committed to the ongoing pursuit of academic excellence. At GNA Elementary Center, we value and challenge each student and provide opportunities for success. Our curriculum and instructional practices are aligned to the PA Core Standards and reflect best practices in instructional methodology. I firmly believe that a partnership between the home and school is necessary for the success of all students. Learning is a fluid process. As such, it involves sharing ideas, making mistakes, and attempting new experiences. Learning involves hard work by everyone, the teacher, the parent, the principal, but most importantly the student. I am committed to the establishment and I encourage families to emphasize the importance of education through the following: Ensure that your child is at school on time each day Attend parent/teacher conferences and school events Monitor your child’s homework daily Expect and support a positive school climate by promoting safe, caring, and respectful behavior Read with your child or encourage your child to read daily I look forward to making this an exciting and successful year for our students. ~Mrs. Sharon Baddick K-L Flier Staff Editor------------------------ Theresa Jacopetti Web Design-------------------Jim Verazin (JD) Copies & Distribution---Donna Meck, Chris Matthews & Debbie Munson Reporters Savannah Atkins, Sabahudin Bilinovic, Lynica John, Sophie Lukowski, Helena Miller, Alexandra O’Connor, Sunni Rae Popovich , Grace Reed, Alexis Schultz 1 The K-L Flier started during the fall of the 1998-1999 school year when several fifth grade students were interested in having a st school newspaper. NED Show By Alexandra O’Connor, Alexis Schultz The NED Show is a character education program that centers around three important messages that have lifelong relevance: ♦ Never give up ♦ Encourage others ♦ Do your best During the assembly on Friday, October 23, 2015, students from Kennedy and the GNA Elementary Center learned about NED’s three messages while also enjoying storytelling, magic, humor and yo-yo tricks! While we were being seated, we got to see some cool yo-yo tricks! One was called “Spiderman” and was done in slow motion. Mrs. Baddick, our principal, introduced us to Jesika. She travels around the country doing the NED Show. Jesika told us some funny jokes which made us laugh. She did yo-yo tricks while telling us stories. It was so cool to see how she made a flag with the yo-yo string! We learned to never give up, encourage others and do your best. There was lots of audience participation. Stephen Armstrong from Mr. Pientka’s class was the lucky winner of a balloon hat crown and a yo-yo!! He will now be able to yo-on-the-go!!! We were all winners because our school got the NED Show for free because we hosted a Pay-It-Forward sale! We sold 281 yo-yos!!! Counselor’s Corner Welcome Back to School and Happy Holidays from Ms. Perhacs!!! I continue to work with grades Kindergarten through 5th grade at KM Smith, Kennedy Elementary, and the GNA Elementary Center as the district's elementary school counselor. I recently updated my "Area Resources" page on my website, so I invite parents to take a look. I am happy to report that I was able to go into all classrooms grades 2-5 in the beginning of the school year to discuss what I do as a school counselor, what my role is, where I am located, how to get in touch with me, and some of the projects that I work on here at school. This October, I was happy to arrange the NED show to present at KM Smith for grades K-1 and at the GNA Elementary Center for grades 2-5. NED is a character education assembly that encourages students to "Never give up" "Encourage others" "Do your best" The show also used yo-yo's and we were able to pay it forward to help another school have the NED show by selling yo-yo's. Mrs. Lewis did a fantastic job with yo-yo sales! Stomp Out Bullying Day was October 5. Ms. Kiwak and I coordinated projects to recognize this day. Staff and students were encouraged to wear blue to support Stomp Out Bullying. Ms. Kiwak did an art project with her students regarding bullying, and classroom teachers shared a presentation 2 with students about bullying and had a guided discussion. Since October is National Bullying Prevention Month, the Pro-Social Committee did the Kindness Tree project to remind students to be kind. Special thanks to Mrs. Stelma, Mrs. Pierontoni, and Mrs. Polifka for helping put the sayings together as well as keeping the tree decorated! Think! Energy with UGI Program By Sabahudin Bilinovic Our students in several fourth and fifth grade classes participated in the Think! Energy with UGI Program on October 26, 2015. Serafino wrote five historical facts and three additional facts. One fact is that the th Grand Canyon was established as the 17 U. S. National Park by President Woodrow Wilson on February 26, 1919. The Grand Canyon is 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and over 1 mile deep in some places. Mrs. Pierontoni Room 104 Adam Shotwell created a tri-fold brochure about the Grand Canyon called “Watch Your Step!” One historical fact is that the Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. One fun thing to do is the Skywalk: a glass-floored, horseshoe-shaped walk that projects over the massive canyon. A: _________________________________ Grade 4 By Lynica John, Helena Miller Mrs. Williams Room 202 Xavier Skillins wrote about “The Time History Found Me.” It all started when I was 6. I was laying in my bed when I saw it, a huge book probably the size of my upper arm. It was wedged in between the dresser and the wall I walked over and picked it up. It was all covered in dust, so I brushed it off. I then read the title…Titanic. I said to myself…”What’s Titanic?” I opened the book and started reading. I read that the Titanic went down at 2:20 A.M. after it hit an iceberg. I flipped the page and saw a slide show or pictures of how the Titanic sank and closed the book. I woke up the next day, ate breakfast, and brushed my teeth. I then ran to my room to get the book but it was gone! I said “Where’s the book?” I then saw my 5 year old sister with it. I said “Give it to me.” I have my Show and Tell today. She gave me the book and I said “Thank you.” I then hear my mother call “The bus is here!” We both call “We’re coming!” I am sitting at my desk at school when my teacher says, “Everyone to the carpet.” I took my book to the carpet. She starts calling names in alphabetical order. Finally, she gets to me and I said “I found a book yesterday. It’s called Titanic.” They all said “Oooooh!” I showed them the pictures of the Titanic and then sat back down. The rest of the day went as routine. When I got home, I did my homework, ate dinner and went to sleep. Mrs. Biehl Room 203 Aidan Rhoades, from Mrs. Wanchisen’s room, drew a plant cell. The parts included the cell wall, mitochondrion, chloroplast, nucleus, and chromosomes. Mrs. Wanchisen Room 204 Bryan Wildoner completed his “Create Your Own Business” project. Businesses are the bedrock of our communities. Businesses produce and sell goods and services that improve everyone’s lives and strengthen communities. Bryan answered these questions about his business: What are your ideas for a business? My idea is “Jump up High.” What tools and materials will you need to get started? I need a store and money to open a business. What will you sell/produce? Bounce Houses How will you give back to your community? Giving the Bounce House money for charity Ms. Price Room 206 Lilli Nice created a “Figure Me Out” poster for math. She wrote these problems on postit-notes. You see the answers when you peek under the note. My age: 3X3=9 My shoe size: 2X2=4 My house number: 6X2=12 The number of students in my class: 9X3=27 My room number: 210-4=206 The number of pets I own: 1+0=1 Mrs. Bartle Room 208 Shelby Shepanski drew and labeled an animal cell structure including the cell wall, ribosomes, cytoplasm, nucleus, and mitochondrion. Mr. Pientka Room 213 Ella Kreitzer worte “Just Add Monsters.” She retold a story that she knew but added monsters. Her story was entitled “Dark Mayhem.” I just finished watching the creepiest movie ever…”Dark Mayhem.” Now, it is time to go to sleep but I can’t use what I already saw. When I got in my bedroom, I turned on my TV for about 5 minutes. I was watching “The Thunderstorms” but it was interrupted by “Dark Mayhem.” My dream started…I felt like I woke up but I was in the main setting of “Dark 5 Mayhem.” I was speechless. The first thing I did was scream. Then, I heard yelling by the doors I hid. Next, I realized I was in the movie. I quickly pulled out my iPod and texted my friends Claire and Bella. They immediately texted me back. After that, they just appeared there with me. We were all creeped out. Suddenly, a guy walked in the room. At first, we didn’t know who it was but then we saw how tall he was. Bella almost screamed “Dark Mayhem” but Claire put her hand over Bella’s mouth. Claire ssid it felt wet and slimy. Then, Dark Mayhem looked behind the screen we were hiding behind. We all screamed. After that, I woke up and saw Bella and Claire with me. Well, I was so scared, I forgot they were sleeping over! When they asked me why I was screaming, I told them the whole story. After that, they hugged me and I felt better! Q: What DOK levels did you find in Grade 4? Write words to apply the concept. A: _________________________________ Grade 5 By Sophie Lukowski, Alexandra O’Connor, Grace Reed Grade 5 Bulletin Boards 2015 Ms. Wilczynski Room 205 Caleb Butczynski wrote a story called “The Follower.” Once upon a time, there were three kids named Tommy, Bobby, and Timmy. All three of them were in the woods and saw a creepy tunnel. Tommy said “Let’s go in.” but the other boys said “no, Never!” Then Tommy went in and the other boys left. They heard a scream and thought it was a prank so they went back home to have a sleepover. They heard a knock on the door and saw a white face but ignored it. One night they saw a policeman and an army man who were looking for a boy named Tommy. They told the men that Tommy is their friend. Suddenly, Timmy spotted something coming closer so they ran away from the white masked thing. As it came closer, Bobby screamed “Run faster!” It was 8:00 pm by the time they returned home. The next morning, they met in the woods by the tunnel where they spotted the thing with the white mask. They ran toward the police officer. As the white masked thing came closer, the police officer yelled “freeze!” “Take off your mask.” As the thing took off his mask, they saw his face and it ran back into the woods away from the tunnel. Apple Ufo Tree Umbrella Mask Nuts Mrs. Kowalski Room 207 Maura Jenceleski wrote a letter to her family for Social Studies. Deer Family, I have some joyful, but depressing news. 6 I have decided to go to Rhode Island, one of the New England colonies. I decided to go to Rhode Island because a man named Roger Williams founded it. He believed that government should tolerate people with religious views. Puritans accused Roger Williams of spreading new and dangerous opinions and tried to silence him. After he was forced to leave the colony, he moved south where he lived in Narragansett. In 1636, he bought land and founded the settlement of Providence. It later became Rhode Island and was the first colony to allow freedom of religion. I am very excited about finally going and being able to have religious freedom and different rules. I wonder if I will ever meet Roger Williams in the new colony. I can’t wait to meet new people. I get to be there as the colony is just beginning. Maybe there will be different foods too. I am worried that the different people will be kind or rotten. I am worried about the wild animals. I don’t want to get hurt. The journey will be long and tough but I will continue on my journey. I will miss you all. I will worry for my safety and yours but I believe it will all be okay.
