Silicon Carbide Properties Silicon Carbide is also called carborundum, a black (and green) hex crystal which is extremely hard and sharp with excellent physical and chemical properties. Physical Properties: Hardness is in the range between diamond and fused alumina (micro hardness 2840-3320kg/mm², Mohs 9.5). Silicon Carbide offers good heat-resistance, heat-conductibility, aseismatic properties, very high wear resistance and has low dilatability. It is also a semi conductor with non-linear electrical resistance. Chemical Properties: Silicon Carbide is quite stable chemically. It can be antacid and antalkali, will not react with fuming nitric acid, boiling sulphuric, hydrochloric or hydrofluoric acid. Sodium silicate attacks it above 1300ºC, calcium and magnesium oxides attack above 1000ºC and Copper oxide reacts at 800ºC to form a metal silicide. Slow oxidation occurs in air above 1000ºC. Silicon Carbide also dissociates or sublimates in molten iron and the silicon reacts with the metal oxides in the melt whist Chemical Analysis the carbonprovides exothermic energy to the furnace.
