DEADLINE for August Village Voice – 20th July
Editor: Heather Charman Unit 380. Ph 5971 5083 or email [email protected]
EDITORIAL
Editor: Mrs Heather Charman
I would like to publicly acknowledge the contributions made to our village by the Frankston Library. As you
may or may not realise, the cost of new large print books is, on average, about $60. Audio books vary
enormously in price; however you will not be able to buy very much for less than $25. Quite recently I
received a phone call from a lady at Frankston library asking whether I was interested in having some large
print books that they no longer needed. I of course said yes, and upon picking them up discovered we had
been given six boxes of large print books in excellent condition. Six weeks later, another call; another 16
boxes of LP and audio books! These books have been shared by Clarke and Manning libraries, The Lodge
and The Manor. It has enabled us to cull some of our older books, therefore further improving the quality of
the books enjoyed by so many. They are willing to give us more but at the moment I have had to refuse, as I
don’t believe we will be able to add a mezzanine floor to our libraries to accommodate more stock!!
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: “Worms are the earth’s intestines.”

Volunteers Required
Chris While is a nurse who is now doing a PhD research study at La Trobe University. She is
interested in discussing/interviewing people about living in their home and what it is like having
community services visiting them. She is looking for volunteers who live at home, have or have
had Home Care services, have a condition that affects memory (like dementia) or lives with
someone who has a condition that affects their memory. If you would be interested in volunteering
or for further details contact Chris While on 9479 5957 or mobile 0400 863 032.
Farewell
I am writing to say I regret not having said farewell when I moved out of the village. Ill health and
time prevented me doing so. I will always remember the warmth of everyone and so many
facilities available with so much thought for the benefit of the residents. Till we meet again.
Dorothy Randall – Opal by the Bay
A little girl asked her father: “How did the human race start?”
He replied: “God made Adam and Eve, they had children and that started the human race.”
She then asked her mother the same question and the mother replied: “Many years ago there
were monkeys and humans evolved from them.”
The little girl, confused, returned to her father saying: “Daddy, how is it possible that you told
me that the human race was created by God and Mummy told me humans came from monkeys? “
The father replied: “Well, dear, it is very simple. I told you about my side of the family and your
mother told you about hers.”

Finding glimpses of hope
On our recent trip to the UK, my husband and I
made our way to a small town called Battle in East
Sussex. The town is aptly named as it is the place
where in 1066 William the Conqueror and his army
fought and defeated King Harold II and his army.
We were able to explore some of the abbey that
William built to atone for the great amount of blood
shed at the battle. As we walked through the
beautiful age old building we were struck by a
sense of the sacred. We touched walls that held
so many stories, and walked on stone steps that
were worn down from the many feet that had trod
on them over millennia.
We were able to walk on the actual battle ground.
When I stood very still I was sure I could hear
whispering among and through the trees the
sounds of men crying in pain and the faint jangle
of horses’ bridles. There was a solemnity
surrounding those fields. When we spoke, we did
so with lowered voices.
Walking around a corner there watching us
through some trees were two new born lambs.
This picture of new life and innocence in the midst
of the past horrors those same fields had seen
stopped us in our tracks. In those tiny new lives,
we glimpsed hope.
Frederick Buechner writes about hope:
Then at last we see what hope is and where it
comes from, hope as the driving power and
outermost edge of faith. Hope stands up to its
knees in the past and keeps its eyes on the future.
There has never been a time past when God
wasn't with us as the strength beyond our strength,
the wisdom beyond our wisdom, as whatever it is
in our hearts--whether we believe in God or not-that keeps us human enough at least to get by
despite everything in our lives that tends to wither
the heart and make us less than human.
 After previous discussions regarding the
Bus and services provided the contract

PONDERISMS
Can you cry under water?
Why does a round pizza come in a square
box?
Why is that people say they “slept like a
baby” when babies wake up every two to
four hours.
If corn oil is made from corn and vegetable
oil is made from vegetables, what is baby
oil made from?
Did you ever notice that when you blow in
a dog’s face, he gets mad at you, but when
you take him for a car ride, he sticks his
head out of the window?
How important does a person have to be
before they are considered assassinated
instead of just murdered?
In this time of winter when life around us seems to
wither, may you find and hold onto glimpses of
hope.

Little Johnny watched, fascinated, as
his mother smoothed cream on her face.
'Why do you do that, Mummy?' he
asked. 'To make myself beautiful,' said
his mother, who then began removing
the cream with a tissue. 'What's the
matter?' asked Little Johnny. 'Giving
up?'
