CONCERNS:
Water migra on, cracking, delamina on
CONCERNS:
Cracking, flexural strength
CONCERNS:
Long-term durability, pumpability
CONCERNS:
Cracking, permeability, durability
SOLUTION:
Hercules Fibers® D5 reinforcement was specifically
selected to address the client’s concerns with water
migra on, cracking and delamina on. Placement
was performed by Laser Screed and power trowel
finishing at the dosage rate of 0.9 kg/m3 (1.5 lb/yd3).
The contractor, who witnessed no cracking or
delamina on issues, reported a high level of
sa sfac on with the speed of finish and invisibility
of fibers. In addi on, the contractor was especially
pleased with the way Hercules Fibers® D5 worked
with power troweling, with no fiber collec ng on
the blades or balling on the surface.
SOLUTION:
This project consisted of placing 20.9 km (13 mi) of
bonded overlay with the thickness of 10 cm (4”) on
the Muskogee Turnpike. As with any other roadway
applica on, wear resistance and durability were
major issues. The concrete was reinforced with
Hercules Fibers® D5 at the dosage rate of 1.8
kg/m3 (3.0 lb/yd3) and was placed using a
slip-form paver. The surface was dragged and
floated to finish. The concrete also underwent
a longitudinal ning process, which was not
hindered by the presence of Hercules Fibers® D5.
The crew noted that “no fiber clumps or fur balls”
were found. The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority
stated that it believes this work resulted in a
30-year repair and has approved the use of
Hercules Fibers® D5 for future projects.
SOLUTION:
The contractor selected Hercules Fibers® D5 as
secondary reinforcement in place of polypropylene
in order to gain extra strength benefits. Dosage was
applied at 0.9 kg/m3 (1.5 lb/yd3). During construc on,
it was found that Hercules Fibers® D5 provided
outstanding cement hydra on in the concrete and
provided a be er fiber-to-paste bond. This helped
the concrete maintain its integrity for the early
form stripping that was done on the project.
Furthermore, Hercules Fibers® D5 demonstrated
excellent pumpability throughout the dura on of
the construc on.
SOLUTION:
A Chinese design firm specified Hercules Fibers® D5
in the construc on of several water treatment tanks
to help avoid poten al problems with cracking,
permeability and durability. Hercules Fibers® D5
was dosed at 0.9 kg/m3 (1.5 lb/yd3) for round tanks
that were 50 m (164 ) in diameter and 6 m (20 ) in
height, and also for rectangular tanks at the site,
which were 100 m (328 ) in length, 33 m (108 ) in
width and 0.9 m (3 ) in height.

Railroad Tunnel Lining
China
PROJECT:
Hercules Fibers® D5 was adopted in the construc on
of tunnels in the Wu-Guang and Zheng-Xi Passenger
Dedicated Line (PDL) railroad projects. The total
length of Wu-Guang PDL tunnels is around 177 km
(110 mi). The es mated amount of concrete used
for the two projects was 9.38 million metric tonnes
and 21.9 million metric tonnes, respec vely.
CONCERNS:
Cracking, tensile strength
SOLUTION:
Hercules Fibers® D5 was used in concrete at
the dosage rate of 0.9 kg/m3 (1.5 lb/yd3) during
the construc on of the secondary lining, with
excellent results:
• The fibers were convenient and easy to use without
affec ng the concrete mix design;
• The fibers dispersed in the mix thoroughly, without
balling or piling, and achieved excellent workability,
without segrega on or bleeding;
• A er form-stripping, the concrete maintained a smooth
and appealing surface without cracking.
Hercules Fibers® Doser
SUPERIOR FIBER WITH HERCULES FIBERS® DOSER
Ready-mix plants can gain more advantages in cost
savings, safety and quality control by incorpora ng
the Hercules Fibers® Doser system into their
opera ons. This is the ul mate solu on for fiber
dispensing and fiber reinforcement.
RELIABLE AND EFFICIENT DISPENSING
• Motor-driven auger
• Capable of being integrated into the exis ng automated
batching system
• Compa ble with bulk super sacks for high-volume
loading which saves me
SAFETY ENHANCEMENT
• Fibers are easier and safer to handle than welded wire fabric
• No need to climb trucks
• Elimina ng poten al injuries that may be caused by li ing
and throwing bags
GREATER QUALITY CONTROL

Hercules Fibers® D5 brings first-rate performance to heavy-duty
commercial applicaƟons. Hercules Fibers® D5 meets the same
naƟonal building codes for providing secondary reinforcement as
monofilament and fibrillated syntheƟc fibers – AND delivers:
•
•
•
•
•
•
BETTER HYDRATION AND BONDING
The Hercules Fibers® D5 virgin cellulose
fiber absorbs moisture that is provided to the
cement for improved hydraƟon and bonding.
SyntheƟc fibers, on the contrary, repel
moisture.
Hercules Fibers® D5 readily bonds
to cement
BeƩer finishing quality
Unsurpassed crack control
Increased hydraƟon
Enhanced impermeability
Increased bond strength
Improved durability
PLUS, Hercules Fibers® D5 is a
beƩer alternaƟve to welded
wire fabric by providing:
• PlasƟc shrinkage crack control
• Lower cost
• Safer and faster installaƟon
SyntheƟc fibers exhibit minimal
