French Programme of study St Cuthbert Mayne Aims Our aim at St Cuthbert Mayne School is to: Encourage pupils to understand and respond to written language from a variety of sources. Promote speaking with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity. Equip pupils with ways of communicating what they want to say, including discussion and asking questions. Encourage the continuous improvement of the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. Provide them with opportunities to write at varying length for different purpose and audience, using the variety of grammatical structures they have learnt. Foster the development of pupils’ appreciation of a range of writing in French. Curriculum French is taught in weekly lessons of 30 minutes by a specialist teacher. It is taught in units as set out in the French overview. Teaching At St Cuthbert Mayne School, we aim to teach French through the use of: The ‘Tout Le Monde’ scheme Authentic reading resources Transactional activities The interactive whiteboard Independent, paired and group work Skills At St Cuthbert Mayne, we aim to provide the children with these key skills: To listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding. To explore the patterns of sound and language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words. To engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek help and clarification. To speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures. To develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases. To present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences. To read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing. To appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in French. To broaden their vocabulary and develop the ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through a dictionary. To write phrases from memory and adapt these to create new sentences to express ideas clearly. To describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing. To understand basic grammar including feminine and masculine forms, the conjugation of high frequency verbs; key features and patterns of French and how to apply these to build sentences. Expectation By the end of Key Stage 2, children are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes taught in each unit.
