Redmond, Washington
The city of Redmond is located about
15 miles east of Seattle across Lake
Washington. Redmond has a population
of over 50,000. High tech industry giants
including Microsoft Corporation and
Nintendo of America are among the city’s major employers. The city’s vision of Redmond’s future
continues the preservation and enhancement of its natural assets: hills, trees, creeks, rivers and
lakes. The vision also includes attractive, safe neighborhoods that reinforce Redmond’s sense of
community and high quality of life. For outdoor fun, nearby Marymoor Park is one of Redmond’s
favorite places to play. This 500-acre state park has it all with bike trails, tennis courts, soccer
fields, baseball fields, a velodrome, rock climbing wall, and the famous 40 acre off-leash dog
park. Redmond’s weather is mild with few extremes. In the summer it remains about 80 degrees
Fahrenheit and during the winter, it rarely falls below freezing. The area has been known for
frequent light rains, which helps promote the growth and beauty of the plentiful parks and
evergreen trees.
Seattle, Washington
Seattle is the largest city in the northwest
United States with more than 600,000
people. The area is mostly known for its
lakes and mountains, coffee, internet
companies, and arts community. Seattle has
all the amenities of a large city with many museums, theaters, shopping districts, and diverse
neighborhoods. One of the most popular locations in the downtown area is Seattle Center, which
includes the Pacific Science Center, the Children’s Museum, The Seattle Repertory Theater, The
Seattle Opera, Intiman Theater, Pacific Northwest Ballet, The Seattle Children’s Theater, the
Experience Music Project, not to mention the world famous Pike Place Market. Seattle also has
numerous cultural centers where people who have moved to the United States can come and
meet others from their home country, share their experiences, and find people to answer specific
questions you might have. You can do an internet search to find out if your country has a cultural
center in Seattle.

To reduce the cost of housing for the two-week period, you can consider finding a roommate
who is attending the workshop during your same period. We have created a Roommate Locator
Database where you can enter your contact information and roommate preferences. You can
also contact other families, parents, and students attending the same session as you, who may
be interested in getting together for sightseeing, carpooling, or other activities.
The database is located at:
https://inside.digipen.edu/cgi-bin/workshops/roommate-summer/locator
The Roommate Locator Database is accessible only if you have registered for the workshops.
Once you have registered, please contact the Summer Workshops department at (425) 558-0299
to obtain a username and password.
Sublet
DigiPen Institute of Technology full-time students occasionally elect to sublet their apartments
to workshop participants. Most of these accommodations are located within short walking
distance from DigiPen. If you are interested in participating in this program, please email us at
[email protected] or call (425) 558-0299.
