JEROME 6 BIXBY (MARY 5 KLOCK, JOSEPH L. 4 , JOHN J. 3 , JOHANNES J. 2 , HENDRICK 1 ) was born July 15, 1840, and died November 24, 1920 in At His Home, Castalia, Ohio. He married LYNDA L. HIGLEY. She was born June 24, 1860. Notes for JEROME BIXBY: Resided Castalia, OhioSOK The Sandusky StarJournal Wednesday Nov. 24, 1920 Prominent Castalia Man, Civil War Veteran, Jerome Bixby, Dead Special to the StarJournal. Castalia, Nov. 24Jerome Bixby an aged and respected citizen, passed away at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday at his home in Castalia. He had been in failing health for nearly four years and a cerebral hemorrhage ended his life. Mr. Bixby was born July 15, 1840, at Savannah, N.Y., and was the son of Nathan and Mary Klock Bixby. The Bixby family is of English origin while the Klock family belongs to the Dutch stock of the Mohawk valley. His grandfather, Joseph Klock served in the revolutionary war. When Jerome Bixby was seventeen years of age he entered Red Creek Union Academy in Wayne co. taking a four year course. He then entered Michigan State Normal at Ypsilanti. His student days at Ypsilanti were interrupted when he enlisted in company F of the First Regiment of Michigan cavalry. With this noted regiment he joined the army of the Potomac and served under leaders, Buford, Hatch, Kilpatrick and Sheridan and for the later part of his service was in the famous Custer's Brigade. His active participation in battles included Winchester; Pope's army during its operations along the Rappahannock; was in the second battle of Bull Run and a short time prior to the battle of Gettysburg was detailed for clerical work at the military headquarters at Washington. He was given an honorable discharge from the army August 20, 1864. Mr. Bixby's ability to achieve success regardless of circumstances and difficulties had apparently been the chief factor in his live. He gained an appointment as sutler after his discharge from the army and in that capacity accompanied the Twenty Fifth Army Corps, Army of Observation, to Texas and continued as sutler to that organization until the fall of 1867. He then took a trip to Cuba where he and a friend operated and owned a vessel and hauled fright between this country and Cuba. In about a year he returned to Savannah N.Y., lived there and at Saratoga Springs, also Lapeer, Mich., until he came to Erie co. Since 1875 he had lived in Castalia where for several years he operated a wagon for country trade. On Dec. 25, 1877, Mr. Bixby was united in marriage to Lydia Higley of Clyde. In 1882 he established a general store in his place and had run the "Big Store" as it was known for ten years in connection with the postoffice. In 1894 he restricted his mercantile operations to hardware and farm implements and almost continuously for the past twenty five years had been identified with that business, being senior member of the firm of Bixby and Meikle. On the reorganization of the Castalia Banking company some years ago Mr. Bixby was elected president and he held the office until death claimed him. He was commander of the Thomas Neill post, No 423 G.A. R., for a number of years, a member of the Masonic lodge at Lapeer, Mich., and a member of the First Congregational church here and always a great advocate of temperance. Mr. Bixby is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. J. Andrew Meikle, and two foster children. Mrs. C.A. Goodwin of Castalia and Guy W. Appleton of Manchester, N.H. One foster son, Thomas Hacker, died March 18, 1907. One brother, John H Bixby of Savannah N.Y., a sister, Mrs. George Fitch of Syracuse, N.Y. and many other relatives and friends also survive him. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from the residence and at 2 o'clock at the Congregational church. 1880 United States Federal Census Name: Jerome Bixby Home in 1880: Townsend, Sandusky, Ohio Age: 40 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1840 Birthplace: New York Relation to Head of Household: Soninlaw Father's birthplace: New York Mother's birthplace: New York Occupation: Pedler Merch. Notes for ALEX KLOCK DON : Alexander Klock Don In the early years of the Fort Klock preservation project, the "Tryon County Muzzle Loaders" became well known for what was called the "Fort Klock Pageant". During the summer and early fall of 1958, preparations were being made for their fifth pageant. They held nine pageants in all. In 1957 Alex Don had passed away. The group desided to dedicate their pageant to Alex Don, who had made the Fort restoration project possible. Below is what was published in the booklet, "Fort Klock Pageant, Sunday September 7, 1958". DEDICATION TO ALEXANDER KLOCK DON Tyron County Muzzle Loaders, Inc. dedicate this fifth annual historical pageant to the revered memory of a fellow citizen and true American, a veteran of World War I and a member and outstanding friend of this organization, Alexander Klock Don, St. Johnsville. Through the generosity, kindness and far sightedness of Alex Don the Tryon County Muzzle Loaders acquired Fort Klock and its beautiful grounds. Convinced that the Muzzle Loaders were sincere in their avowed purpose of an historical restoration of this Fort, built in 1750, Alex Don, a direct Klock descendent and owner of this Fort and property, made it possible for us to proceed under the provisions of a long term lease, renewable at its expiration. The advice, interest, wise counsel, and whole hearted cooperation bestowed by Alex Don will forever remain a cherished memory. We know that Fort Klock as an historical monument to be preserved for prosperity was long a dream of Alex Don. Happily, the dream came true in Alex Don's livetime. And so, through our years of mutual interest and cooperation, we launched together this project which has grown far beyond the dimensions as originally planned. In a true sense every activity which has its focus about Fort Klock is a memorial to Alex Don. As you see the history of our country reenacted today in colorful pageantry, we ask you to pause a moment in silent tribute to this man, Alex Don, who could have erected no more enduring, than to make possible the preservation and public enjoyment of this ancestral homestead, trading post and farm. Actually, his generosity has far wider influence that represented on these historic grounds, for having provided the Muzzle Loaders with a home. Alex Don has been the guiding hand in the far flung efforts of the Muzzle Loaders to inspire a greater love of country and a deeper reverence for the history of our own Mohawk Valley, and its pioneers. In a true sense his spirit abides with us here today. Alexander Don and Mabel did not have any children. 310. St. John's Church Record. Solomon died Jan. 6, 1894 or June 6, 1894.SOK Solomon Klock or Clock was married twice, first to Elizabeth Bellinger, second to Laura ( Lana ) Ann Flanders. THE LEADING CITIZENS OF MADISON COUNTY SOLOMON KLOCK, of whom this interesting sketch is written, was born in 1803, in St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, N.Y. This town was also the birthplace of his father, John Klock, whose date was August 17,1776, and of his grandfather, George, who was born in 1742. Henry Klock, the greatgrandfather of our subject, who was born in Prussia, came over to America, and settled in St. Johnsville in 1704, when a very young man. This ancestor of the family was four times married, and had children by three wives, nine of them being sons. He was a farmer, and, being a very large landowner, often remarked that he was "land poor." A firm Presbyterian, deeply religious, bringing up his children in that faith, he died in 1760, when quite an old man, in the confident hope of a glorious resurrection. George Klock married Catherine Bellenger, by whom he had twelve children, five sons and seven daughers, who all reached maturity and had large families. John Klock, the father of Solomon, married Eve Timmerman. Sixteen children were born of this marriage, twelve of them reaching adult age. Only four sons and four daughters are now living: Solomon was the first born; Simeon, just eightyfive. August 10, 1893, a wealthy farmer of Minden, Montgomery County, N.Y.; Margaret, born in 1812, unmarried; Nancy (Mrs. Charles Walrath), of Oneida, born 1814; Reuben, born August 10, 1818, a very wealthy farmer, living in Danube, Herkimer County; Hiram, born in St. Johnsville, 1820, a farmer, and has two sons; Eva Ann, born 1821, wife of Henry Elwood, a farmer of Florentine, Montgomery County, has one son; Lucy, Mrs. Henry Bellenger, aged sixtyfive years,. whose family consists of three children. The mother died in 1852, aged sixtyeight, and the father ten years later, in 1862, when eightyfive years old. They were buried in their family graveyard with their ancestors. Our subject was reared to habits of industry and thrift, and, like many of the finest minds of our country, received his early education in the primitive, unpainted log cabin, with the regulation slab seats, and the writingdesk a plank attached to the wall, resting on pegs. But, while the comforts and conveniences so familiar to the modern student were not theirs, the elementary education was thorough; and it is a matter of common remark that the "old field" schools have turned out some of the greatest statesmen of the land. When the lad was old enough to work, he had only the opportunity which the winters afforded of attending school; but his natural abilities aided him, and, being observant, Mr. Klock has stored his mind with a fund of information, and even in his advanced age can hold his own with our most skilful mathematicians. He has always been a great reader, keeping himself thoroughly posted in the current events of the day, and is especially fond of newspapers, having been a subscriber for the Albany Argus for over twenty years. His memory for incidents and occurrences is something truly wonderful, recalling readily at a moment's thought the dates of births, deaths, and marriages in his large family connection, and also those of his neighbors and friends for over a generation. Solomon Klock married Elizabeth Bellenger, June 16, 1831. Their only child, Irvin, died at the age of fiftyfour, having married, and leaving two daughters and one son. Mrs. Elizabeth Klock died in 1833; and Mr. Klock married second Miss Larry Ann Flanders, daughter of Peter Flanders. Four children were the fruit of this marriage, namely: Myron, of Canastota, married, and has one daughter; Nancy, widow of James Weaver, mother of two daughters, at present travelling in Germany, but has her home at Saginaw, Mich.; Theron, living at home; and Iantha, wife of Gideon Stephens, contractor and farmer, of South Bay, Oneida Lake, who has two children, one son and one daughter. Mrs. Larry Ann Klock died in 1875, at the age of sixtytwo, and is buried in that beautiful place of the dead, Mount Hope Cemetery, at Canastota, N.Y. Mr. Klock has lived for some years with his son Theron on the farm, and for the last five years has enjoyed with him his present beautiful home. Theron Klock, son of Solomon, was born in the town of Stockbridge in 1837, and, when he was eleven years of age, removed with his father to the excellent farm of one hundred and eightysix acres near Wampsville, now his home. He was married December 3, 1862, to Mary E. Stebbins, daughter of John and Fanny (Leach) Stebbins, both of Augusta, Oneida County. Mr. and Mrs. Klock have one daughter, Laura, wife of James A. Gregg, of Oneida. One daughter, Mabel, has been born to Mr. and Mrs. Gregg. Mrs. Klock's aged mother of seventyseven years is a widow in Oneida, having buried her husband in October, 1881, at the age of seventyfive years. Democratic in politics, and Presbyterian in religion, Mr. Solomon Klock and his son preserve the traditions and faith of their ancestors in party and church.
