From the founding of the US, the South was democratic beginning as Democratic Republicans and eventually changing to democrats. Other parties opposed the Democrats but it was just prior to the Civil War the Republican party was formed to stop the expansion of Slavery.

Franklin Roosevelt and his new deal originally had the support of the southern democrats but that began to change as he began to attract the support of northern African Americans. The South became even more suspicious as Truman pushed further for integration of the military and when in 1948 wanted laws outlawing lynching and poll taxes. 6

Because of these actions, Democrats in the deep south formed the Dixiecrats. In 1948 Thurmond ran on a third party ticket, the States' Rights Democratic Party or the Dixiecrats. . Thurmond carried 4 states but lost. Following WW II the Democrats won election again with Harry Truman. The Dixiecrats die after this election but the split in the party continues. This was the beginning of the end of the solildly democratic south.

In 1950 Thurmond ran for state senate against Olin Johnson and lost. The race against Johnson was the only state election that Thurmond ever lost.

In 1952 Thurmond endorsed republican Dwight Eisenhower and because of that action when Thurmond was preparing to run for the US Senate the Democrats refused to give him the party's nomination. Strom Thurmond won anyway and became the only person to ever win a US Senate seat as a write in vote.

Thurmond spoke out against Brown V The B.O.E with the Southern Manifesto which not only condemned the decision but also encouraged the people of the South to resist the forced integration.

Thurmond remained in the US senate for 46 straight years,but switched to the republican party in 1964. Thurmond tried to stop the Civil Rights Act of 1957 with the longest filibuster in US history lasting 24 hours and 18 minutes. A filibuster is when a person in government talks without stopping to try and prevent a vote on an issue. Thurmond rambled on and on about many things including his grandmother's biscuit recipe.

Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination in hiring
Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed literacy tests
24th amendment which outlawed the poll tax. Strom Thurmond changed from being a Democrat to a Republican in 1964.
African Americans have consistently supported the Democratic Party since the 1960's because of their support of Civil Rights. During the Presidency of JFK and Lyndon B. Johnson many South Carolina left the democratic party. Since 1964 with the exception of Jimmy Carter of Georgia, South Carolinians have always voted Republican.

Thurmond played a leading role in the changing of the south into a republican region by ensuring that Nixon chose a conservative running mate, Spiro Agnew. Thurmond stood against the Supreme Court decision of Alexander vs Holmes County Board of Education. Brown vs the Board had stated the south had to integrate with "all deliberate speed", which the south took as when ever we feel like it so in 1969 the Alexander case required the schools be integrated immediately. 13

Since Strom Thurmond had such a close relationship with the Nixon White House, he was able to bring many government jobs to SC and get many South Carolinians appointed to high positions. 14

Beginning in the 1970's Thurmond's public stance on race relations seemed to change with the times. Although Thurmond never renounced his personal beliefs he helped pass many laws giving more rights to African Americans such as the Voting Rights Act. Thurmond also supported making Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday a federal holiday. 15

In 1981 Thurmond became the President Pro Tempore of the Senate. This position is rarely used but has two purposes. The first purpose is he is in control of the Senate if the VP isn't there. The second purpose is for reasons of succession. If the President, VP, and Speaker of the House were all to die then the President Pro Tempore becomes president. The President Pro Tempore is always the longest serving member of the Majority party in the Senate.

Thurmond did run for president under the Dixiecrat party but lost in 1948. He refused to run for reelection in 2002 and left the Senate in 2003 setting a record for serving the longest which, has now been beaten by his rival Robert Byrd a Democrat that unlike Thurmond did not switch parties. Thurmond still holds the record for being the oldest ever US senator.
