Assignment Packet 2
Tests and Quizzes
Turn your assignment packet into the black basket by
the front board.
● If you have not taken the Unit 1 Test, you will do
so now
Staple in this order:
1. Assignment sheet (lists the assignments)
2. Workbook pages
3. Your work/loose-leaf paper
● If you have not taken or finished Quiz 1, you will do
so now
Warm-Up #22
● “Absolute Value and Linear Equations Review”
○ Handout due Wednesday, 9/21
○ Counts as a quiz grade
9/20/16
1. Solve the following absolute value equation:
4|3x + 4|= 4x + 8
Piecewise Functions
2. A line perpendicular to y = 1/5x - 4 passes through
the point (-3, 1). Write an equation for this line in
slope-intercept form.

EQ: How can you graph, write, and apply piecewise functions?
Graph #1
1. Make a table of values for the
function y = 2x - 1, including
x = -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, and 2.
2. Graph the function y = 2x - 1 on
your dry-erase board.

5. Now make a table of values for
the function y = -x + 3, including
x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

9. You now have the piecewise function
Piecewise Functions
Piecewise Function
What is a piecewise function?
Graph the following piecewise function:
● A function made up of two or more equations
● Has different rules for different parts of its
domain
Warm-Up #23
9/21/16
Graph the following piecewise function.
Turn in your “Abs. Value and Linear Equations” handout.
Hint:
1. Graph f(x) = -2x + 3 first. Erase everything to the right
of x = 2.
2. Graph f(x) = x - 1 next. Erase the part of this graph that
is to the left of x = 2.
Step Functions
Step functions pair every number in an interval with
a single value. The graph of a step function can look
like the steps of a staircase.
Write a piecewise function for the graph.
Evaluate the function for the given value of x.
{
To the left of x = 0, the graph is
part of the line passing through
(–2, 0) and (0, 2). An equation of
this line is given by y = x + 2.
To the right of and including
x = 0, the graph is part of the line
passing through (0, 0) and (2, 2).
An equation of this line is given
by y = x.
Real-World Scenario
A regular letter sent via the United States Postal Service
requires a stamp of 47¢ for the first ounce and 21¢ per
ounce for the next 12 ounces.
1. If x = # of ounces of the letter and f(x) = cost for stamps
in cents, write a piecewise function for this scenario.
2. Graph this function.
Exit Ticket
Take out a piece of paper, put your name at the top,
and complete the following question.
The line parallel to 2x - y = 6 passes through the
point (-8,-5). Write the equation of this line in
slope-intercept form.
a. f(-3)
Answer: -11
b. f(0)
Answer: 7
c. f(-2)
Answer: -9
d. f(5)
Answer: 2
