The Shrine is a fraternity based on the Masonic Beliefs of the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man. Medinah was founded to further promote the tenets of Freemasonry, brotherly love, relief and truth. Remembering our creed – Faith, Hope and Charity –the greatest of these being Charity – we founded our own Charity, the Shriner‟s Hospitals for Children®. The person who took the time to ask your name, introduce you around or show you the ropes? If we’re lucky, we have one person in our lives who made a positive impact personally or professionally. Being a Virtual Mentor is your opportunity to make the same difference in the life of a man on his way to becoming a Master Mason and Shriner. All it takes is willingness, enthusiasm and time. As a Virtual Mentor, you will be paired with a Candidate with similar interests in your area. Communicating by phone, e-mail or in person, you’ll have the opportunity to share your knowledge and enthusiasm about Masonry and about being a Shriner. You’ll answer questions or concerns, help find the right Lodge best suited to the Candidate’s interests, and help him with his journey to becoming a Shriner. You will also have the opportunity to make a new friend. To learn more about this program please go to www.ShrinersVillage.com Medinah Shriner The Potentate’s Perspective As this is my last attempt at the “Pote‟s Perspective”, I am overcome with a dose of melancholy. I think we had a very good year, but I know it can always be better. I look forward to the next edition of the “Medinah Shriner” to read the new Pote‟s Perspective as I know he will be a very insightful Noble with new ideas and approaches and, above all, I know he wants the very best for Medinah Shriners. I urge you to heed his direction. During the recent Thanksgiving holiday, I took some time to reflect on the things for which we Nobles and Ladies should be thankful. Although the season of giving and celebrating is now upon us, I hope you will take a minute to consider the many good things we Shriners enjoy. The most obvious is „Shriners Hospitals for Children”, the greatest philanthropy in the world. We are so proud of the great work our professionals do with the kids who come to us with a wide range of ailments. Many of our children are returned to their homes with no trace of an affliction and every child we treat is substantially improved. As Shriners it is our most important accomplishment and our greatest success. I thank God every day for the blessings of Shriners Hospitals for Children. I hope you do too. At Medinah Shrine Center, we have much to be thankful for. Our catering service staff, from Don Helmig and Cyrille Girouard all the way through the staff in both the banquet facility and the Oasis always goes the extra step to assure that the Shriners are given a little extra service and a better value than others. It‟s that little extra step that sets our temple food service head and shoulders above the others. The catering operation is not only a great benefit financially to Medinah Temple, the Oasis operation is to all members a huge benefit of membership. There is not another Shriner Center that has a catering service agreement such as ours. We are so lucky to have these Nobles and friends serving us. The Recorder‟s office staff has a duty to serve the officers and members of our Shrine. There is much information that must be recorded and tabulated in order for our Shrine to function. Our Recorder and his staff do a terrific job of maintaining the information necessary to operate our Shrine. They are some of the greatest benefits we enjoy at Medinah. At the beginning of the term, I asked the Potentate‟s Aides to serve the members as well as the Potentate. I think they have done a superb job. They are present at every event from set-up to tear down and are always willing to serve. This type of dedication is typical of the fraternal love I will speak about in the next paragraph. I love them all, brother and sister, I am forever indebted to them. Lastly on my list for today, but probably first on my list of importance is the friendships we develop. Do you have a friend who will do whatever it takes to help you? If you said no, you are probably wrong. We are Masonic brothers. We will help a brother in need. If you think that is just a saying, just ask when you need help. One of the blessings I value most is the friendships I have discovered over the years as a Shriner. Because of the value of these friendships, I have dedicated myself to return the favor just as I have received it. I hope that you will do the same for the friends who have given to you one of the greatest gifts of all, sincere friendship. Thank you for joining me on this journey through 2011. I have done my best to be the Potentate you deserve. I hope I have not disappointed you in any way. Paul D. It was also the scene of what makes the Chicagoland area such a great place to be and was shown by the outpouring of care it has for its children. Over twenty thousand motorcyclists paraded down Western Avenue to deliver Toys to the Marines. The only entrance fee is a toy for a child. Philanthropist and Principal of GTCR Bruce Rauner made a large difference to Christmas for many of the Chicago area children by making a Ten Thousand Dollar donation to be split between “Toys for Tots” Chicago and the Shriners Hospital for Children - Chicago. In his remarks, Mr. Rauner expressed his and his wife‟s concern for the Children of the Chicago area and felt it was their duty to help by giving back to such great organizations as Shriners Hospitals for Children and “Toys for Tots” Chicago. He went on to say that the inspiration to make this donation came from the very strong biker community including the Medinah Motor Corps here in Chicago and all they do to help the underprivileged children of the area. On hand to receive the check from Mr. Rauner was Potentate Paul Barber, Commander Bill Kissane and Patrick Temesvary of Medinah Motor Corps and tons of other Masons and Shriners involved in the biker community. Potentate Paul Barber thanked Mr. Rauner and offered a tour of the Chicago Hospital later where Mr. Rauner and his wife would be able to see firsthand, the quality of care for the Children at our hospital. The weather was great, the giving was unsurpassed and the parade never ending. Overall, it really shows what the Holiday Spirit is all about to be in Chicago and a Shriner. Chuck was very active with the Medinah Greeters and other groups while he lived in the Chicago area. He called to ask if I remembered Chester Mathison, an active Chanter who died in 1976. Being a long time member myself, I did. Chuck informed me that he had lost track of Chester‟s lady Charl until a few years ago when Ruth Amundsen was able to provide the information. Since that time Chuck has called Charl Mathison at her home in Florida every Sunday, just to see how she was doing. Sunday November 20 was no exception, but when Chuck called he was informed that Charl Mathison passed away on November 18, 2011 at the age of 104 years. It is not often that someone lives such a full life and Chuck wanted me to relay that story to you knowing that most of you never knew the Matheson‟s, but that it is so unusual to survive for 104 years, and I am happy to do that, but there is a more important story here. Where can you develop a friendship that goes so far as having an 87 year old Chuck with his daughter Dawn friend calling every Sunday to check on a 104 year old widow of a friend who died 35 celebrating his 87th birthday. years ago? The answer of course is in the Shrine, and at Medinah Shrine in particular. Thank you, Chuck Ferre for being a great Shriner. It is men like you who are the backbone of our fraternity. I know I speak for all of us who remember your days in Chicagoland in saying that we are proud to know a man of your character as demonstrated by the fidelity of your friendship. On November 20th we had another Fly-out from the DuPage Airport to the Jainsville Airport (60 nautical miles), where the group of 12 Aviators enjoyed a great lunch and good fellowship. We traveled in 2 Cessna's and a Piper Aztec provided by Ken Phlamm from his Travel Express Flight School. Once again we would like to invite any Shriners who have an interest in aviation to join us on one of our Fly-outs and consider becoming a member of our Unit if you like what you see. CaptZ- Scribe HIGHLANDERS Season's greetings from the Highlanders, After concluding another parade season, bringing piping and drumming joy to folks near and far, we're in a bit of a slowdown time. But much like the fall bulbs you plant, there's activity that will burst forth in spring. Rather than go dark, we're hard at work on Wednesday nights practicing new material, getting some of the newer members "parade ready" and generally enjoying the legendary Highlander camaraderie. We recently hosted a pizza/beer reception for out latest class of Shriners. New or old, this is a great time to become a Highlander, no matter what your musical experience is. To a certain extent, musical desire can overcome (lack of) musical experience. We have plenty of non-musical roles too. Contact our Chief Bob Stoops for more information. Our casual meetings start at 7:30 and run no more than an hour. All Nobles are welcome to visit any of our meetings or events. If you want to join it‟s only $25 plus $25/year dues. Most of our members are from the Maine Township communities of Des Plaines, Glenview, Niles, Park Ridge, and Prospect Heights, but anyone is welcome. President Craig Stewart presides at his 1st meeting on February 21st. Medinah has supplied us with a set of mailing labels for all Nobles in our area, and we will be sending them some information on what we‟re up to. With all the fun events on our calendar, we hope to build our membership up. Feel free to invite any Nobles you know to come out and join in on the fun. As a community service, we will again be sponsoring youth athletic teams in the Golf Maine Park District throughout the year. We will have the various schedules and plan to visit each team at least once. Please try and join us to watch the 87th Annual East-West Shrine Football Game at the Oasis on January 21st at 3 pm. We are also going bowling in the dark at Diversey Bowl on Friday, February 3rd. We will also try and have a group at each of Medinah‟s fun events throughout the year. For information on these events, please call 847 778-1824. Hope to see you soon at Medinah‟s Maine Shrine Club. -Howard Schermerhorn, Sec. WIDOWS CLUB AN INVITATION FROM THE WIDOWS OF MEDINAH NOBLES If you are a widow of a Medinah Noble, we would love to have you join us for a luncheon on the first Saturday of every month. As widows of our Medinah men, this club has been meeting since 1982, and we presently have a membership of about fifty ladies, and approximately thirty ladies who meet at 11:30am once a month. We have delicious lunch and a social meeting afterwards. We sometimes have a speaker or play games and always get news about what is going on at Medinah from our liaison officer, Wilbur Schenk, who also attends our meetings. It is a great way to stay in touch with what our men supported and we really have a good time knowing we are still part of that philanthropy and what goes on at the Shrine, and the First Lady‟s project for the children at the Hospital. Please join us if you can: The cost is only $20.00 for lunch.
