Brookfield mini review—24th and 25th February
Welcome to Jean, Stephen and Una who will be here at
Brookfield for today and tomorrow to conduct a local
authority review. As mentioned in a previous newsletter,
the purpose of the review will be to provide the school
with some feedback on its current performance and to
help us prepare well for our forthcoming OFSTED
inspection.
Please would you make sure that all children are picked
up and dropped off punctually during the coming two
days and given a good night's sleep tonight.
The review will be challenging and thorough and I am
extremely grateful to all the staff and governors for their
hard work behind the scenes, particularly so soon after a
busy science week and half term. Good luck everybody!
Science Week
Many thanks to all those people who attended last week's
science evening. Over 420 people took part in an
inspirational evening of investigations, challenges,
demonstrations and workshops and a great time was had
by all. Science evening capped what proved to be an
unforgettable week of scientific activities and the children
were audibly and visibly disappointed when Melanie drew
it to a close in Friday's assembly.
In our final assembly, Frank, a radiographer and dad
showed us some fascinating x-rays and spoke about the
history of radiography. Children from Kate's DT club shared
their electrically powered moving vehicles and the
following children were awarded prizes:
Clara (Y3) for winning the science evening engineering
challenge by balancing 2500 grams on a structure made
out of sugar paper and tape.
Rayna (Y6) who picked up a special prize for leading one of
the science evening activities (creating artificial snow) and
Eva (YR), Cyrus (Y1), Scarlett (Y2), Ava (Y3), Nathan (Y4),
Florence (Y5) and Dorothy for designing some amazing
inventions.
A special word of thanks goes to Melanie (science subject
leader) for organising this wonderful week, to the staff for
their unstinting support and to those parents who gave up
their time to lead workshops, participate in the science
evening and present in assemblies.
As one parent commented, ‘weeks like this, will inspire the
next generation of scientists’.
Further photos of the week can be viewed on the school's
web- site under galleries.

Brookfield Book Club—Book Review
‘The Garbage King’ by Elizabeth Laird
Review by Charlotte, Dorothy, Lily Pearl, Rowena,
Simone and Tilly
The Garbage King is about two boys who live in Africa,
Mamo, who is very poor and Dani who is much richer.
Mamo lives with his sister, who gets a job to pay their rent.
While she is gone, someone who says he is Mamo’s uncle
takes him into the countryside and he has no idea where
he is. When he wakes up, he is surrounded by strangers
and has to work on the farm. Dani lives with his family,
and is in fear of his harsh father. His mother is very ill and
can’t protect him. She has to go to London for surgery. His
father says that unless Dani passes his exams (which he
won’t!) he will be sent to a bad place called Jigga.
Dani and Mamo both run away, and meet in a cemetery,
where they are both sleeping. Dani gives Mamo his money
to buy food, and is angry with himself for stupidly giving his
money to this rough flea-ridden stranger, but Mamo comes
back with food, and Dani is happy to see him as he is
scared on his own. Dani finds a dog, which he gives to
Mamo, and the boys join a gang.
Dani thinks his mother has died, but his father comes to
find him and persuades him to come home, and tells him
that it was his uncle who had died, and his mother was
much better. Dani wants Mamo to live with him, but Mamo
finds his sister again, who is married and expecting a baby,
and goes to live with her and her husband.
The themes of the book are the lives of street children in
Africa, friendship, people needing each other and having
adventures

Parent view
The school is due an OFSTED before the end of this academic
year. Last time we were inspected in May 2009, we secured a
good overall grade with some outstanding features. OFSTED
will be keen to take into account parental views of the school
and with this in mind it would be great if you could submit
your thoughts via Parentview at the following web-site
http://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk
who have already completed the
questionnaire. It is much
appreciated.

Here is the NEWS…
24th February 2014
We hope you all had a great half term. Firstly we wanted to say a big thank you to all the
staff for organizing the amazing Science Evening before the break. It was a hugely
inspiring event.
The Valentines Bake Sale drew massive crowds despite the darkness and rain. Thanks
to everyone for baking, selling, buying and eating. We will have the total by next week but
we already know we made £240 from Kate’s beautiful made-to-order cakes. Thanks so
much to Kate and to Carol for organizing.
Fabric donations for the Centenary Bunting now being accepted at the school office. All
colourful, cotton fabric in good condition welcome.
A shout out for printers - Ali Masterman has come up with the brilliant idea of getting
cotton bags or T-shirts printed to sell at the centenary events. She is looking into costs
but if anyone has contacts in the printing world who might be able to offer discounts or
advice please contact Ali at [email protected].
