Research Experience:
My Ph. D. work was focused in the field of Drosophila genetics to study “The effects of
heterozygous inversions on crossing over in D. ananassae”. Presently, we are working in the
area of population and behavior genetics of Drosophila. To study allozyme polymorphism in D.
ananassae, a large number of natural populations and laboratory stocks are being analyzed for
different enzymes and their electrophoretic variants. This study will help us to understand the
pattern of allozyme polymorphism, genetic differentiation among the populations, linkage
disequilibrium and association between alleles of different enzyme loci. We are also studying the
effects of genetic variation and abiotic factors like temperature, light and food ingredients on the
mating behaviour in D. ananassae. To see the effects of thermal stress on mating propensity
between karyotypically characterized stocks of D. ananassae, males of known karyotypes are
being employed. Our investigations reveal that there is effect of inversion karyotypes on mating
ability in this species. We are also studying the effects of esterase active and null variants on
mating propensity. The effects of certain herbal extracts e.g. Withania somnifera and Rouwolfia
serpentine on mating propensity is also being measured to know whether these herbal products
leave some effect on mating propensity in this species.
