Dear Students, Parents/Guardians, and Friends of Herron High School,
Technological skills are an important part of college preparedness. We have received
consistent feedback from our graduates attending colleges and universities that the digital
requirements and knowledge required at college are significant, also, the Indiana Department
of Education plans to transition to computer-based standardized tests. We understand the
importance in training our students for the digital demands that are an essential skill in their
academic success.
Thus, it is critically important that your family signs and turns in the
Technology and Acceptable Use Policy.
The use of technology provides opportunities to teach students about safety and responsibility
in a digital environment. While access to many social networking sites is blocked on our
network, internet access is widespread in public places as well as the home. A survey of Herron
students last year showed that 95% of students had internet access in the home. Students
without internet in the home are accessing it at the home of friends, at internet cafes and at
libraries. Studies have also revealed that 85% to 95% of American teens have a Facebook
page, and a new report released last month by Nielson finds that among teens between the
ages of 13 and 17 who own a cell phone, more than half of those teens own a smartphone,
and therefore have round the clock internet access and texting capabilities.
In this unprecedented age of access, teaching our teens to be safe and responsible online is a
community wide effort shared by our families as well as our school... Herron students have
reviewed the Acceptable Use Policy in their advisories, and in the coming months will continue
to review the policies through Socratic discussions. Digital responsibility will be emphasized
and reiterated through lesson plans throughout the year, including responsible and legal use of
creative content, the power and pitfalls of social networking, the potential impact of
irresponsible behavior on a student’s future, and how to distinguish legitimate fact-based
information and research from undocumented opinion.
We have several suggestions to help parents navigate the many options to help protect
students from making poor decisions while accessing the internet off campus. Herron High
School recognizes that families have different perspectives on internet use, and that while
some see benefits to allowing social networking, others feel it is inappropriate for their child.
Some thoughtful planning and family discussions about internet usage will help parents
determine what level of access is appropriate for their student.
All internet providers allow clients to establish restrictions on home networks. Because each
provider’s child safety program is different, parents are encouraged to review their provider’s
options. If you do not know how to access these settings, contact our HelpDesk. You must
identify your service provider, and every effort will be made to help you set up restrictions.
Here are a few measures that we encourage our families to take:








Require that your student use their device or family computer in a common room of your home, and
monitor what your student is doing.
Require that your student put away their device and mobile phone at a pre-selected time each evening.
If your student maintains social networking sites, insist that they use privacy setting on their pages to
restrict access to friends only, and that they friend you so you are able to monitor their activities and
interactions with others.
Don’t allow your student to take their device to a friend’s house or anywhere out of the home if not
headed to school.
If you are concerned that retiring the device at the appointed time is insufficient, turn off your wireless
router to prevent late night access to the internet, but keep in mind that this is not applicable to 3G or 4G
smartphones.
Using your internet provider’s child safe program, set parameters using key words to block sites or
internet search returns you feel are inappropriate for your family. Keep in mind that these types of blocks
prevent legitimate information as well as dangerous content, and weigh the advantages and
disadvantages thoughtfully.
Engage the whole family in a discussion about our Acceptable Use Policies to reinforce the ongoing
discussions at school.
Remind your student that uploading personal content or photos online carries significant risks, and that
regardless of privacy settings, there is no foolproof way to prevent unintended viewers from seeing
material. Ask your student to consider how they would feel if his/her mother, a friend’s mother, a boss,
his/her pastor, or a member of Herron High School’s leadership team saw the page, and to evaluate the
wisdom of sharing content based on the presumption that this is likely. It IS likely, as some of our students
could testify after making a thoughtless choice.
Our Technology program is, like all of our programs, an evolving process rooted in research-based best practices.
We will make every effort to keep parents engaged and informed as technology presents new opportunities and
challenges, both in the home and on campus.
Sincerely,
Janet H. McNeal
Head of School
FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH APPLICATIONS: All Herron High School families are asked to complete the State Free
or Reduced Lunch Application. Having all families who are eligible for free or reduced lunch receiving this benefit
helps the school in many ways, including increased funding. Many families are surprised to learn that they do
qualify for reduced lunch and student fees. If you are absolutely certain your family income does not qualify for
benefits, please complete the student name(s) portion of the application and write “Do not Qualify” before
returning the application. If you need to print a new application, they are available here.
ANNUAL FALL OPEN HOUSE: The Annual Fall Open House is October 21 from 6-8 p.m. Invite your neighbors,
friends and family members who may have an interest in learning more about Herron High School. Also, we need
volunteers to serve as greeters and refreshment servers. Please email Natalie Lott at [email protected]
if you are interested in volunteering. Open enrollment is Oct. 21-31. Sibling preference for enrollment is given
ONLY during open enrollment. Applications will be online for the 2015-16 academic year, starting Oct. 21.
NWEA EXAM: NWEA Exam dates are Sept. 11 to Sept. 30. All 9th and 10th grade students will take the exam.
Testing dates vary by class schedule. Students will test in three subject areas: English classes will test Reading,
Social Studies classes will test Language Usage, Math classes will test Mathematics. Northwest Evaluation
Association exams are comprised of tests that provide data that determine student growth throughout the school
year. The data is also used to determine reading Lexiles and help to determine ability levels. As always, students
need a good night's sleep, good breakfast and a technology free time every evening to clear their mind. After a
day filled with learning, rest is a wonderful way for students to achieve balance.
JUNIOR CLASSICAL LEAGUE: JCL members should see Magistra Bush to sign up for an Urban Epic team. Whether
you want to help with face painting, the Odyssey obstacle course, designing photo backdrops, serving Roman
doughnuts, running classical carnival games, reading Latin children's books to kids who attend, costumed
personas, or any other of the fun activities we are planning for the Urban Epic on Oct. 3, we need you! JCLers
should also return their permission slips and $8 for tickets to see the Metamorphoses at Franklin College by
Thursday, Sept. 25. We are attending the play on Friday, Oct. 10. Finally, parents and friends of the school are
invited to get your car classically clean at the JCL's Classical Car Wash in the Russell parking lot on Saturday,
September 27. For any donation to our classical scholars' ambitions to attend our state convention and Italy trip,
we will give your personal "chariot" a washing worthy of an emperor!

OCTOBER 15 IS PSAT, FRESHMAN 101, SENIOR COLLEGE VISIT DAY
PSAT: Wednesday, October 15 is the national PSAT day. On that day over 3.6 million high school students,
including all of our SOPHOMORES and JUNIORS will be taking the PSAT, Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test.
This test has two purposes. First, it is a rehearsal for the SAT test that many students will take as they seek
admittance to college. Second, this is a qualifying test for juniors for the National Merit Scholarship program.
In an effort to help students prepare and feel comfortable with the PSAT the Advising Office is offering a practice
PSAT on Saturday morning, October 4 for all sophomores and juniors. This is optional for those students who
would like to practice the test before taking it.
FRESHMAN 101: On October 15 all FRESHMAN will participate in the annual Herron 101. This important day will
offer the freshman the CogAT (Cognitive Aptitude Test) as well as a Learning Inventory. Both of these will give
freshman insights into their innate aptitudes and learning styles. This day will also introduce the freshman to
Herron’s top leadership organization, the Achaean 80, as well as a college planning tool, Naviance.
SENIOR COLLEGE VISIT DAY: Finally, on this day the SENIORS will be required to visit a college. Seniors may visit
a college with their family or friends. Parents will be asked to confirm all college visits. Several Herron teachers
will also be hosting a day for our seniors on various college campuses. A list of these available trips will be posted
soon.
URBAN EPIC - HERRON HIGH SCHOOL’S ILIAD EXPERIENCE: Mark your calendars for October 3rd, 6-9:30 PM – we
are hosting a very special all-school celebration! Urban Epic: Herron High School’s Iliad Experience is our way of
sharing our school’s classical curriculum and culture with our students, families, and community. As a school, we
will be reading The Iliad aloud over two days, culminating with the final chapters being read and performed during
the public event. We will have some special guest readers joining our students, teachers and staff in the reading.
There will be theatrical performances and Greek refreshments as well. The Urban Epic is planned in conjunction
with First Friday, so we hope to host a lively mix of students and neighbors. This event is funded by a grant from
the Junior League of Indianapolis. Save the date - you’ll be hearing more about the Urban Epic in the coming
weeks.
