We have returned to another dynamic and exciting Science topic – Changing State and an Art drawing and animation unit- “People in Action.” In Literacy we will begin by studying the features and language of persuasive adverts and texts and writing an advert to persuade the teachers to buy a Hoverbike! We shall further develop the skills of choosing vocabulary for emphasis and exaggeration to affect readers. Later we shall study how to write a short narrative in a genre of choice and to develop skills of description, characterisation as well as using author’s techniques and opposite of direct and indirect speech to move the story forward. Literacy skills developments: • Children have the opportunity to develop and refine their speaking and listening skills and drama techniques throughout the curriculum. • Guided reading is taught throughout the week where children, in small groups, discuss and answer questions on an appropriate text. • Spelling, punctuation and grammar is taught regularly throughout the week, within group sessions as well as within all lessons where there are writing opportunities. In Numeracy Mr Yeates’ group will be calculating the area of triangles, parallelograms leading to compound shapes. Algebra will be explored, including refreshing Roman numerals. All four operations are used within a context and times tables are studied and tested. Mrs Austin’s and Mr Dawkin’s groups will be looking at how vertically opposite angles are equal, the sum of the interior for any given polygon, algebra and conversion of measurement including imperial to metric. Year 6 Booster groups will be held every week where specific skills will be taught to children’s individual needs. In Science we shall be discovering how solids, liquids and gases behave. Through investigations and fair testing children will have the opportunity to acquire and develop further skills of recording observations, using specific technical vocabulary and writing sound conclusion based on evidence. Children will also follow a line of enquiry such as Why scientists make multiple readings in order to gain an understanding that one result could be misleading. In Art we shall develop our skills of observation and communicating ideas through sketching and printing. We shall explore and develop ideas of figures in action and compose and draw expressive portraits. Shape and tone will be explored through studying Matisse leading to a final printed piece. ICT is used across the curriculum in readiness for the wider world and e-safety is continually referred to in all ICT learning opportunities. This term’s focus is to build upon the previous terms of stop motion animation. “Newsround” is regularly watched and used as a discussion point about home and World news. In RE we will be looking at the concept of Easter and The Empty Cross and its significance for Christians. In Music we shall be learning how to sing and play songs in a round and studying different genres of music that can be used in a round. In French – A L’Ecole (At school) is our unit. We shall be learning how to converse in French about school life. Opportunities are used throughout the day to practise and develop the French language. In PSHCE we will be looking at “Relationships”. This themed topic provides opportunities for children to reflect on who and why people are important in their lives, how to manage their own feelings and how to support others when they are unhappy. Forgiveness will be also be explored In PE benchball is used to develop team gamesmanship and tactics. In Games we will be developing and improving our striking, aiming, passing and intercepting skills based around the game of soccer Reminders: • PE kit and warm Games kit in school every day. • Children should regularly read at home for at least 15 minutes across a range of genre. • Please ensure that homework is returned on or before the due date. • If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
