CONNECTIONS Connecting People With God and His Family Getting to Know NEWS Our Pastor... October 2010 newsletter publication of the Archbold Evangelical Church It is a strange thing to have to write about yourself. It’s almost like I am setting up an online profile for a dating agency. But I am not! I married my high school sweet heart upon my college graduation from Taylor University. We have one child [son Alexander Boyd, born 12/30/08] with another child [we are going to be surprised as to the gender, much to the chagrin to my wife who would love to decorate the nursery in either pink or blue rather than the neutral yellow but she likes surprises as much as I do] on the way due late October. We try to make it back up to our home town about every two months where both of our families still reside, a small town just north of Grand Rapids, Michigan. When we do make it up there our parents do what all good grandparents do: spoil their grandchildren. I love doing many things but if I was going to narrow it down I would have to say that my hobbies include: reading, writing, hiking, canoeing, playing basketball, wrestling with my son, doing home projects that my wife wants done, playing boards games, running, watching football, traveling, and sitting at a café with my wife asking her all sorts of questions, oh, and running a chainsaw. There aren’t many things I dislike but I have noticed some: out of all the food I have tried in my life I have a total of eight things that I will not eat, I don’t like me or my son wearing pink, I don’t like shopping but will suffer through if for my wife, and I don’t like receiving buckeyes from Ohio State fans [I am a wolverine at heart but I root for the Big Ten]. Some things that most people don’t know about me are: I have a crooked mouth, my 6 front top teeth are fake, and I cry at chick flick’s. I’ve had some great jobs in the past. In high school I worked as a lifeguard. During the summers when I was in college I worked concrete construction, pouring curbs and fixing cracked cement patios. The greatest summer job I have ever had was I served as a White Water River Raft Guide at a camp in Northern California. Not only have these jobs shaped me but I was able to travel a great deal in college. I studied abroad for a semester in Lithuania. While over there I was able to travel all over Europe as well as travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia. I also joined a European traveling basketball team while over there that also afforded me to travel and experience many things. As I said already, I truly enjoy reading. And while it would be very difficult for me to give my favorite book or books, I will tell you what I have read for fun in the past six months: The Bondage of the Will by Martin Luther; A. Lincoln by Ronald C. White, Jr.; Have a little Faith by Mitch Albom; The Prodigal God by Timothy Keller; Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing; Fatherhood by Bill Cosby; Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides; Same King of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore; John Adams by David McCullough; Lost at Sea by Patrick Dillon; Night by Elie Wiesel; Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis; The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. And if I was going to pin it down to one verse that I run to most it would be Isaiah 66:2b, “This is the one I [the Lord] esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at My Word.” A close second would be Galatians 1:10, “Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Recently though, I have truly been changed by a passage that I have been meditating on and have memorized: 2 Peter 1:3-11. It starts off with, “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by his own glory and goodness…” And all I can say is that it gets better from there. That’s a little bit of who I am… Pastor Jesse Kahler ike a L Racing River Side In COVER ~ Getting To Know Our Pastor PAGE 2 ~ Like A Racing River ~ Fall Frenzy PAGE 3-5 ~ Boards, Appointments, Volunteers PAGE 6 ~ What’s In A Name? ~ Jubilee Gang PAGE 7 ~ Library News ~ Leadership Team Communications PAGE 8 ~ Women’s Bible Studies ... I think, at this time of year, about our children going back to local schools and to college. They go with the flow, like a racing river. They encounter obstacles and with each one, they gain strength to overcome the rocks and rough places. Help is there just for the asking. God’s love follows them from morning through the night. Our prayers sustain them. These children are our future. Pray for them, write to them, encourage them. “LIKE A RACING RIVER” The beginning of life is a head water, Small, though carrying a strong current, it flows. It pulses, as a heart beats in a newborn, Continuing to a destination no one knows. Every day obstacles fill this flowing stream. Strength comes as we hurdle over every object. Some days rage builds as this small stream widens. Overflowing it’s banks with unforseen shadows, it connects. We flail around, calling for help. At times the water engulfs us with fear. Our calls are answered when an arm reaches out. Our God is always near. A pool of comfort lays patiently waiting. An oasis is reached with time. Fear subsides as we moor our vessel And from the turmoil we climb. Life starts as a small stream Which runs into a racing river, flowing fast. Time, with God’s help, heals the rushing current. He consumes the rage and calms the soul at last. by Marla J. Starry F all Frenzy Connecting People With God and His Family ... (Shaded) Board of Discipleship Connection Club What’s in a Name? ... A series on the names of God What’s in a name? When a couple becomes aware of a pregnancy, their thoughts turn to the selection of a name for their child. Usually there are many factors which influence their choice. The surname is the name passed on from generation to the next. Those are the names that distinguish our heritage. Those are also the names that sometimes provide the basis for jovial discussion. The most common such name in Northwest Ohio is “Rupp.” The more pertinent issue for the moment is “Does GOD have a name? If so, what is it?” For the answer to this question, we turn to Genesis chapter 1:1: “In the beginning GOD created the heavens and the earth.” The word translated GOD is “ELOHIM.” There are various opinions as to the root of the word. Many believe that it is derived from the shorter word “EL.” This word El is translated “GOD” some 250 times and frequently in circumstances which especially include the great power of God. Thus, from its derivation and usage, ELOHIM seems to express the general idea of greatness and glory. The idea of creative and governing power, of omnipotence and sovereignty, is clearly evident. How appropriate that it should be used here in Genesis chapter one to reveal God Himself -- bringing cosmos out of chaos, light out of darkness, habitation out of desolation, and life in His image. There is still one other striking peculiarity about the name ELOHIM. It is the usual Hebrew ending for all masculine names in the plural. It is especially noteworthy that it should reflect the Trinity -- Father, Son and Holy Spirit. With Elohim, the plural form teaches us that no finite word can adequately convey the idea of the infinite personality or the unity of persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) in the Godhead. In the beginning GOD (ELOHIM) created the heavens and the earth. The chapter ends (Genesis 1:31) “GOD (Elohim) saw all that He had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning -- the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.” His name is ELOHIM. Often the marvels we see in creation prompt us to worship. This theme is repeated throughout Scripture: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1) - By Charles Rupp ent! LAFAYETTE STREET EXTENSION Since it has been determined that the LaFayette Street extension will be moving forward, we have had discussions with the Village of Archbold engineering office concerning the curb cuts for a future drive from our parking lot to LaFayette Street. Although the decision to put in the drive has not yet been made, these curb cuts will be put in as the street is developed. NEW CHURCH SIGN The construction of the new church sign has been completed. The electronic portion of the sign, which will allow us to put messages as well as other graphics on it, will be utilized in the near future. This will be a great asset in our communication efforts to the community. Please pray for Pastor Jesse and Pastor Wayne as they prepare for and attend this Summit. 2011 ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING The date for the 2011 Annual Business Meeting has been set for 7 May 15. Several new ideas have been discussed for the format of this meeting but nothing has been finalized at this point. CHURCH BUILDING USAGE GUIDELINE UPDATES “I don’t attend this church, but I think that allowing people to walk in this building is a wonderful thing.” So said one of the “walkers” who uses our church building to exercise. Through making this building broadly available we are inviting people on the first steps of a spiritual journey to know and trust in Jesus Christ and to walk with Him through life. Because this building is entrusted to us to use effectively for ministry, we want to manage it wisely. We want everyone who uses the building to be warmly welcomed and assisted by someone who is part of the AEC family. At the same time the church leadership is concerned that we are able to provide a safe place for people to use. To address these concerns we will be making some changes in our building guidelines. Our first goal is to make sure that every time the building is open a trained representative of the church is available. During the normal office hours a church staff member is at the Welcome Center. After hours we look to volunteers to greet people. Right now not all the volunteer time slots are filled, so our second goal is to fill every slot. In the near future, the hours the church building can be open will depend on the availability of Welcome Center volunteers. Soon after you read this, we will be making any necessary adjustments to our hours. If you can give a few hours a week or a month, you will have an important part in helping to keep the building open. Please call the church office at 419-445-5661 to volunteer for this ministry opportunity.
