SUNY Emeritus Group and Friends
Winter Gathering and Open House
194 Central Avenue, Fredonia, NY
This year the Emeritus group was included in the all-campus holiday reception held at President
Horvath’s home on Saturday, December 7th. The entire campus staff was greeted from 1:00 until 5:00 that
cool winter day. It is difficult to say how many emeritus members attended this gathering since it was an
Open House and people came and went at various times during the afternoon.
It goes without saying that the Faculty Student Association prepared a fabulous buffet. Everyone
delighted in the array of delicious hors d’oeuvres offered throughout the decorated rooms.
Even as people were mingling and chatting about holiday plans, Peter Komada, our dependable
photographer, was able to get some very nice pictures of smiling people dressed in their holiday attire.
After attending the President’s Open House, the Emeritus group as well as the townspeople had
their choice of several events taking place throughout the village.
Some of the community events available that day included Miracle on Main Street which included
activities for children in Barker Commons, the WCA Christmas Ornament Sale, a craft show held at the
Methodist Church, the Farmer’s Market at the Masonic Lodge, the alternative Christmas market at the
Presbyterian Church, Santa’s Workshop held at the Grange Hall, the lighting of the Barker Commons tree,
and the Empty Bowl Sale held at the Blessed Mary Angela Parish in Dunkirk.
Although it was a busy day and many found it challenging to get from place to place in order to
enjoy all the holiday activities that took place, all agreed it was a delightful way to start the holiday season.
A brief reminder: for those members who wish to take advantage of the discounted Life Dues, the
deadline is April 15, 2014. For more information on age groups and discounted dues, please refer to the
Fall 2013 Emeritus Newsletter or contact Phil Kumler at [email protected] or phone: 716-680-2225.
As of this writing and as we approach the beginning of the 2014 year, it must be noted here that
our area has already had its share of “the white stuff.” Lake Erie has not frozen over yet - which produces
“lake effect snow” in all its gusto. Even before the first day of winter (December 21st ) we had experienced
the amount of snowfall that usually falls the entire winter season.
The spring meeting will be held on Thursday, March 20th at Shorewood Country Club. We
have often discussed moving our spring gathering to a little later in March to better accommodate those
late-returning snowbirds. The first day of spring seemed like a logical choice. This year we will recognize
both spring events – St Patrick’s Day and the Vernal Equinox. Of course every week later in March
increases the likelihood of pleasant spring weather. We hope you aren't inconvenienced by the later date.
Respectfully submitted,
Carolyn Briggs,
Secretary
Emeritus Newsbits, Spring 2014
Here in alpha order are some bits of news about our colleagues. Thanks for sending them to us. Please
send us your news too. Try to be brief if you can. Don't think of them as letters but as postcards to old
friends and colleagues. They are interested in you. We will only edit gently.
Dan O'Rourke, Editor
I just want to let you know how much I enjoy the newsletter and received my first one by email. I've been here in
Valencia, Pa., just a mile or so from Mars, since 2006. I live in a patio home development, Cobblestone Village,
which is just across the street from son Scott and family. Daughter, Sharon, lives not too far away. I keep up with
news in Dunkirk-Fredonia reading the Observer on line. Lots of friends and activities here. It was a good move
for me. Still involved with a senior bowling league and aerobics program. A "hello" to all my former college
friends.

Gil and Jeanne Gaudia spent the first 15 winters after Gil retired in 1985 sailing their 30-foot sloop “Half Moon”
along the Atlantic coast of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. They estimated that,
during that time, had they instead sailed in a straight line due south from their winter home in Hobe Sound,
Florida, they would have made it to Antarctica had Jeanne not mutinied and shot the erstwhile Polar explorer.
During those summers, Gil played “tree farmer” on their 13 acres in Eugene, Oregon, riding a tractor, felling
trees with a chainsaw, driving a pickup truck with a rifle rack in the rear window and wearing a cowboy hat and
boots. Most people in Oregon did not know that the driver was from the South Bronx until they engaged him in
conversation. Meanwhile Jeanne was creating art in oils and watercolors, making stained-glass panels and
practicing with her Olympic-style bow regularly enough to become the National Women’s Senior Archery
Champion at the Senior Olympics in Tucson, Arizona in 1997.
After Jeanne lost her vision as the result of a stroke in 1999, they sold the boat and eventually their home and
settled into apartment living in Eugene where they now have the great joy of being near both daughters, Shelley
and Amy, all year-round.
In 2003, Gil self-published a semi-autobiographical novel, “Outside, Looking In.” It did not become a best seller.
Their email address is: [email protected] and they would enjoy hearing from their old friends.

Walt Schultze wrote and asked to be remembered by his old friends at Fredonia. He is now 93 and following a
bad fall and a prolonged bout of pneumonia, he and his cat Fluff moved in with family in Manchester, NH. He is
very well cared for and enjoys the company of his grandchildren and their pets. He concludes: "I think of you
often and want to keep in touch. Thanks for thinking of me - I smile at the nice reminders in the Emeritus
Newsletter’s photography.”
WALTER SCHULTZE (“DUTCH” TO A FEW)
I have two new books coming out this month, my 13th & 14th. One is a collection of Chinese Chan Buddhist
poetry, A Full Load of Moonlight , which I co-translated with Mary M.Y. Fung. It's being published in Hong Kong
by Musical Stone Culture, Ltd. The other is a collection of my prose poems titled The Grandson of Heinrich
Schliemann & Other Truths and Fictions. Best regards to all,
DAVID LUNDE
This winter has certainly been challenging, as across the nation communities have faced relentless periods of frigid
temperatures and snow accumulation. Here in Fredonia, it’s meant constant vigilance and hard work in keeping sidewalks
and roadways clear, and all of us are certainly tired of the bundling up and stepping carefully on surfaces too cold for salt to
melt. It’s time for spring and all the hope and energy that Geoffrey Chaucer summarized in the opening lines of The
Canterbury Tales: the time that “Zephirus . . . with his swete breeth / Inspired hath in every holt and heath / The tendre
croppes.”
We’re ready for the excitement of April and May, with all the concerts and activities and departmental celebrations. And I
hope that those of you who are in the area will be able to join us for special performances and events. Here are some
updates of campus activities and initiatives. I hope you continue to look at the website, The Statement, and Campus Report
for information about campus events and issues. I always welcome your ideas, comments, and suggestions
([email protected], 716-673-3456).
With best wishes,
Ginny Horvath

Re-Branding Committee Recommendations
As a next step after mission statement revision, the campus has been engaged in discussions of rebranding: determining the
right name to use consistently when we refer to the campus and finding an updated visual identity to reflect that name. The
Re-Branding Committee researched the current words, associations, and attributes associated with the university by its
target audiences, analyzed the data generated, and plans to share recommendations in March at the University Senate and
across campus. I’m grateful to Michael Barone, Director of Public Relations, and Patty Herkey, University Designer, for all of
their work with the members of the Committee. I look forward to hearing the campus’ ideas as we move forward to update
our name and look.
State and Campus Budget
In the proposed budget for New York State, there are no surprises for SUNY Campuses: no increased state allocations, no
new capital plan, and no state coverage for negotiated salary increases. This leaves us with a gap between the amount we’re
funded and the amount we are spending, and Vice Presidents are working within their divisions to plan ways to trim each
division’s budget for 2014-2015 and beyond. Maintaining our enrollment (through both recruitment and retention of
students) remains critical to our viability. As before, budget priorities will be to avoid layoffs, to avoid catastrophic cuts to
programs, and to ensure health and safety. I plan to hold a public session to present the budget in mid-April.
Construction Updates
Progress continues on the new Science Center, scheduled to be open for classes in Fall 2014. The construction should be
complete by June so that labs can be moved to the building in time for the new semester. There are a few unnamed spaces
still available if you would like to establish an endowment that names a space in the building. Please plan to be part of the
Dedication on Friday, October 17!
The groundbreaking for the addition to the Rockefeller Arts Center will be in late spring or early summer. This project will
link the RAC with Mason Hall; provide exciting new studio spaces for visual arts, theatre, and dance; and provide a clearer,
more accessible entrance to the building and its galleries and performance venues.
We are also completing student townhouses on Ring Road near the baseball/softball fields, with upper-division students
moving into the new units for Fall 2014. These furnished apartments offer single rooms and shared living and cooking spaces
to 198 students: it’s independent living, with the convenience and safety of campus housing.

Emeritus Fredonians who have an interest in St. Lawrence University (as it
was 70-80 years ago)...or in childhood in a New York City immigrant family
c.1903-1918...or how a Brooklyn lad, made to go to work at age 13, managed
finally to get a PhD from Harvard...might be interested in a biography of my
father I recently published: Teacher, Scholar, Mentor: Dr. Harry Reiff of St.
Lawrence University (402 pp., 568 Illus.). The biography is based on oral
history recordings, diaries, letters, academic archives, and other data. While,
I believe, locally only Kris and Dallas Beal were friends with my father (they
met at the famous Pinebrook Conference in the early 1960s), anyone
interested in university life and pedagogy in the 1930s will find this very
useful. It's available from SLU at brewerbookstore.com All the best, Dan Reiff
