High Five: Apple Tree

High Five: Apple Tree
Ready . . . Review the Activity
On the interactive whiteboard, students will pick apples from a tree and sort
them into groups to illustrate the multiplication problem they are solving.
Set
TECH TIP:
. . . Explain the Strategy
Skip counting by fives and remembering that the product of any number
times 5 ends with a 0 or a 5 will help students become five-times table
experts in no time!
Go . . . Practice the Strategy
1.
Display High Five: Apple Tree on the interactive whiteboard. Have
students imagine that they are at an orchard with a number of baskets
to pick some apples. Tell them they will use the apples as counters to
help them solve the problems on the board. (Note that the basket and
apples are infinitely cloned and you can drag as many as you need.)
2.
Remind students that the High Five strategy means counting by fives.
When students remember High Five, they should also keep in mind
that the product of any number times 5 will end in either a 5 or a 0.
3.
4.
5.
Model the first problem: 4 × 5. Tell students that to think of this
problem as “four groups of five.” Drag four baskets from the box. Drag
five apples off the tree and into the first basket. Then drag five more
into the second basket, another five into the third, and another five into
the fourth basket. Count the total number of apples and write “20.”
Then explain that you’ll use High Five to check your answer. Ask: Does
my answer end in 0 or 5? (Yes) Let me double-check by skip-counting: 5, 10,
15, 20. Yes, we’ve got it right.
Invite students to follow your lead. Call up volunteers to move the
correct number of baskets to the center of the board and then place
apples into each basket to match the problem. Ask students to check
their work by using High Five and to write their answers on the board.
Screen
Shade
As you start a lesson, you can
use the Screen Shade tool to
hide the apple tree or other
graphics and show just the
problems on the board. Have
students consider the patterns
they see in the problems and
think of a strategy to use. Then
click the Screen Shade icon on
the toolbar to turn it off.

More Practice
For more practice multiplying by 5, go to the second page of High Five: Apple Tree to sort more apples into
baskets. Invite students to come to the board in pairs for this practice. One student can decide how many
baskets they need and drag them across the screen, while the other student counts the apples from the tree
and sorts them evenly into the baskets. Ask student pairs to work together to check their answers using High
Five. Finish by checking their answers on the board.
