Wanted- Air Pollutants
An air pollutant is a chemical in the atmosphere in concentrations high enough to harm organisms and materials or to alter
climate (Miller, 2006). In this assignment, students will create a wanted poster for a particular air pollutant. Students will be
randomly assigned a particular air pollutant. Each poster will include the following categories:
 “Description & Sources” Describe pollutant. How is pollutant produced? Include both human and natural sources.

“Aliases & Accomplices” Give chemical symbol if applicable. Is pollutant considered primary or secondary? Does
pollutant combine with other gases to form secondary pollutant? Describe. If secondary pollutant, describe components &
formation.

“Crimes Committed" Summarize environmental damage, property damage and impacts to human health. Include
statistics.
 "Suspected Hideouts." Is pollutant found outdoors, indoors or both? Identify specific layer(s) in the atmosphere where
pollutant is found. Geographic regions where pollutant is most common.

“Plan of Attack” How can production and impact of pollutant be minimized? Is pollutant regulated by existing legislation?
What can individuals / governments do?
 Photo – should illustrate your pollutant or its impacts.
 Additional, creative categories will be rewarded with higher grades.
 The back of your poster should have a bibliography listing your sources.
 You will hang your poster in class, where it will be judged by your peers. Grading criteria include overall aesthetic appeal,
quality of information, neatness and humor.
