Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference
History and Schools
History
The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, commonly called “The Kansas Conference,” is a prominent intercollegiate athletics conference comprised of ten outstanding independent or private institutions of higher education in the state.
The origins of the KCAC are traced to February 15, 1890, when the Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Association became the result of the first successful attempt at
organization among Kansas colleges, “to promote and regulate amateur intercollegiate athletics.” At that time the association or conference included not only
private universities and colleges but also Kansas Agriculture College (now KSU),
Kansas University, and Washburn University. Football seems to have been the major
sponsored sport, and Baker University won the championship for the first three or
four years.
In about 1902 this early association became allied with the Kansas College Athletic
Conference, a group which was the first to adopt a definite set of rules and regulations. It also promoted an annual track and field meet which has continued yearly
since, except for World War years. Basketball has been sponsored since 1904.
Football was revived in 1907. Tennis began as early as 1912. Golf was added in 1923.
By this time the name of the conference had been altered to the Kansas Collegiate
Athletic Conference; it had grown to 17 college members and two allied members:
Baker, Bethany, Bethel, College of Emporia, Fairmount (now WSU), Friends, Kansas
Wesleyan, KSTC of Emporia (now ESU), KSTC of Hays (now FHSU), KSTC of Pittsburg (now PSU), McPherson, Ottawa, St.Benedict’s (now Benedictine), St.Mary’s,
Sterling (formerly Cooper), Southwestern, and Washburn, and with St.John’s and
Kansas City University (Kansas) as allied members. Kansas University and Kansas
Aggies had dropped out earlier to join other conferences. In 1923 the College of
Emporia, KSTC of Emporia, KSTC of Hays, KSTC of Pittsburg, Wichita (formerly
Fairmount), Southwestern, and Washburn withdrew to form the Central Conference.
The present legal entity comes from a reorganization of the conference when the
predecessor Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference formally disbanded on
December 1, 1928, and a new conference was formed which again was called the
Kansas College Athletic Conference. The members were Baker, Bethany, Kansas
Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, and St.Mary’s colleges. At that time sportswriters
quickly gave the KCAC league a nickname: the “Little Six,” in contrast to the Big Six
(which became Big Eight, now Big 12) which also was organized in 1928. St.Mary’s
College was discontinued in 1931. The College of Emporia returned to the fold in
1933, and Bethel was readmitted in 1939. Friends, a former member of the KIAC,
was admitted in 1953. Sterling and Southwestern were approved for membership
in 1958. In 1968 Tabor College and St. Mary of the Plains College were admitted to
make twelve members in the conference, and the conference was organized into
Southern and Northern divisions until 1970 -- when Baker, College of Emporia, and
Ottawa withdrew to join two separate Missouri-based conferences. In the mid-1970s
the formal name was changed again to Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
In 1975 women’s intercollegiate athletics were incorporated into programs of the
KCAC. Ottawa was readmitted in 1981, bringing the conference membership to 10.
In 1992 St.Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City left the conference and eventually closed. In 1999 Saint Mary College-Leavenworth joined to return the KCAC
membership to ten institutions.
The “Kansas Conference” (KCAC) continues to be an all-Kansas conference. The
KCAC is an affiliated conference of the National Association of intercollegiate Athletics with headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. Today the KCAC sponsors conference intercollegiate athletics in football, volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s
cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball,
men’s indoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field, men’s outdoor track
and field, women’s outdoor track and field, baseball, softball, men’s golf, women’s
tennis, and men’s tennis.

Coaching Staff
McPherson College Football
Brian Ward
Head Coach
McPherson College ‘97
Third Season
Ward is entering his third season as head coach
of the Bulldogs. A 1997 graduate McPherson
College with a Bachelor of Arts in history, Ward
was named the Bulldogs’ head coach December
8, 2006. Ward holds a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from the University of
Phoenix, and is currently working on an MBA
from the University of Phoenix.
Ward has served as assistant and coordinator on football staffs at Glendale Community College (Ariz.), Wabash College (Ind.), Missouri Southern
State University, and Tulsa (Okla.) Union High School.
He was named the 2002 American Football Coaches Association NCAA
D-III National Assistant Coach of the Year while at Wabash College.
At the conclusion of his playing career at McPherson College, Ward
served as defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator under Bruce
Grose for the 1997 season. Under his direction, the Bulldogs set a school record with 12 blocked punts, and ranked 2nd in the NAIA in pass defense and
8th in total defense while finishing with a 6-4 overall record. He also coordinated the Bulldogs’ recruiting efforts in Arizona.
From 1998 through 2000, Ward served as the defensive coordinator and
secondary coach at Glendale Community College in Glendale, Ariz. In his
final two seasons at Glendale, the Gauchos were ACCAC champions and won
the 2000 NJCAA National Championship by defeating Garden City CC in the
Valley of Sun Bowl. The 2000 Gauchos led the NJCAA in forced turnovers
with 44 and ranked second in rushing defense, yielding 32.2 yards per game. Ward then served as assistant head coach, special teams coordinator,
secondary coach, and strength and conditioning coordinator at Wabash College (NCAA D-III) in Crawfordsville, Ind., for four seasons (2001-2004) under
former Ottawa University head coach Chris Creighton. In 2001, the Wabash
defense ranked 5th in D-III with 36 turnovers, blocked six kicks, and led the
North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) in interceptions.
The Little Giants were undefeated during the 2002 regular season,
NCAC champions and D-III national quarterfinalists. The Wabash defense
led D-III with 25 pass interceptions and 43 forced turnovers, and the NCAA at
all levels with a 28.2 yards per return kickoff return average.
Wabash was ranked as high as #2 in the 2003 AFCA national poll when
its defense ranked in D-III’s top 10 nationally in total defense, rushing defense,
interceptions, and kickoff return average. In 2004, the Little Giants led the
NCAC in total defense, scoring defense, passing defense, and pass efficiency
defense, and broke the Wabash school record by allowing only five touchdown passes during the season.
In 2005, Ward was named associate head coach, defensive and special
teams coordinator at Missouri Southern State University (NCAA D-II) in
Joplin, Missouri. Under his direction, the Lions recorded a school record 30
sacks and returned a kickoff for a school record 101 yards. 2005 also marked
the only season in school history the Lions has recorded both a kickoff return
and a punt return for a touchdown.
After serving as recruiting and strength coordinator for MSSU during
the spring and summer of 2006, Ward spent the fall of 2006 as the defensive
coordinator at Tulsa (Okla.) Union High School.
Active in his community, Ward has directed Special Olympic fund raisers, a “Football Reader Fridays” program in the local elementary schools, a
community-wide youth football day, toy, clothing, and canned food drives for
branches of the National Guard, Salvation Army, and local schools as well as a
College Outreach program for the elderly community.
A graduate of Glendale (Ariz.) Apollo High School, Brian is married
to the former Amy Brandseth. They are the parents of two young children,
Travis and Ellie.

Missouri Southern State Univ.
Third Season
Bettasso will serve as the Bulldogs defensive
coordinator after serving his initial season
with the program as linebacker coach. He
enters his third season with the Bulldogs
after a one-year stint with Missouri Southern
State University, where he assisted with the
defensive secondary after a four-year playing

2009 Season Outlook
McPherson College Football
Overview
Head Coach Brian Ward welcomes back 18 starters for the
2009 season, including eight on offense, nine on defense, and a
place-kicker. A majority of the other returners have seen playing experience during their McPherson College careers.
The Bulldog offense retained all but two key players from
last season, including starting wide receivers Gary Cox and
Dwight Hale. However, McPherson returns three starters on
the offensive line, as well as quarterback Shane Mascarenas
and wide receiver Stephen Harrison. McPherson hopes to rank
amongst the top in the NAIA in passing offense and scoring
offense for the second season in a row.
The McPherson defense returns a strong nucleus of talent
in 2009 as they strive to be amongst the top defenses in the
KCAC and NAIA. In 2008 the Bulldogs ranked seventh in the
KCAC in total defense. The combination of key returners and
experience gives McPherson a reason to expect an improvement in 2009.
Offense
Quarterbacks
McPherson returns Josh White (6-1, 180), who started the majority of the games last fall. However, junior Shane Mascarenas
(5-11, 190) appears to be the front-runner for the starting position for the Bulldogs. Mascarenas played in one game for the
Bulldogs in 2008 where he completed 19 of 29 passes for 321
yards and three touchdowns in week one against the Bethany
Swedes. An injury in the fourth quarter sidelined Mascarenas
for the remainder of the season.
The competition for playing time behind Mascarenas
will be between the four other quarterbacks listed on the Bulldogs roster. There is still no clear front-runner for the back-up
role.
He tallied four touchdowns (two rushing, two receiving) and
899 yards of total offense.
Senior Stephen Harrison looks to lead the way for the
McPherson receiving corp in 2009. The 6-1, 180 pound Harrison has been a fixture in the Bulldog passing attack over the
past two seasons. Harrison led the team in touchdown receptions in 2008 with nine and looks to build upon that for the
2009 season.
Behind Harrison, McPherson will count on a group of
talented young wide receivers. Sophomores Andy Skinner and
Thomas Stauts have seen limited time, but have the ability to
emerge this fall. They amongst others will enter camp this fall
expected to battle for playing time behind Harrison.
Offensive Line
McPherson returns six-letter winners from the 2008 offensive
line. Last season’s line provided protection for the 17th ranked
passing offense in the NAIA.
A ten game starter at tackle, Casey Hayes (6-5, 280)
returns as the Bulldogs most decorated offensive linemen from
2008. Hayes earned 2008 second team All-KCAC honors. He
along with junior guard Chris Lange (6-5, 300) and sophomore
center Marcus Esquivel (6-1, 285) look to anchor the Bulldog
offensive line. Other returners include, senior Sean Grandin (63, 300), sophomore Joe Becker (6-5, 285) and sophomore David
Kraft (6-2, 225).
Running Backs
In 2009, the Bulldogs will look to solidify a rushing attack
that ranked seventh in the KCAC. The Bulldogs lost a pair of
young running backs and a veteran performer at fullback.
Despite the losses, Head Coach Brian Ward is excited about
the running game in 2009. The Bulldogs return junior Chris
German (5-9, 190) and sophomore Ryan Smith (5-7, 175), who
both saw time in McPherson’s running back by committee approach in 2008.
Receivers / Tight Ends
Two Bulldogs who saw extensive action during their McPherson careers completed their eligibility last fall, but McPherson
returns a standout senior wide out along with a number of
young talents.
Gary Cox was a game changing player who caught
83 passes for 1186 yards and six touchdowns in his two-year
career as a Bulldog. Dwight Hale was a key part of the Bulldog
offense during his three-year stint in McPherson. Last season,
Hale posted his most successful offensive year as a Bulldog.

Defense
Defensive Line
This fall, McPherson returns four letter winners from the 2008
defense line.
Junior defensive end Scott Jones was a strong contributor to the Bulldogs defense in his first season. Jones (6-3, 245)
made 10 starts last season, ranking tops among KCAC defensive linemen tallying 67 tackles, 36 of which solo. Junior
Chris LeBlanc (6-4, 225) enters his junior season with 65 career
tackles, third most of players on the current roster.
On the interior, McPherson returns its two of their top four
tackles from 2008. Senior Drew Griffin battled injuries in 2008,
but when healthy provided consistent play on the interior of
the defensive line. Senior Raashun Payne is the other returner.
Payne saw platoon duty in 2008, but is expected to make more
of an impact in 2009.
Linebackers
McPherson returns three of the top four linebackers from
2008. The centerpiece of the 2009 linebackers is starting SAM
linebacker Jeff Paulson. Paulson (6-1, 205) has continued to
work hard to better himself for the 2009 campaign. He made
119 tackles as a junior, enough to rank seventh in the NAIA in
tackles per game. Paulson also tallied 11 tackles for loss, four
sacks and four interceptions.
Sophomore Jacob Kerbel (6-2, 205) showed a lot of promise during his freshman season recording 59 tackles. Kerbel
played most of 2008 in a rotational role, but will be expected to
step up into a starting role in 2009.
The coaching staff expects a continuing battle for playing
time at the linebacker position.
Secondary
The Bulldog secondary should be in good hands this fall, as
the entire starting secondary corps returns. With all the starters returning expectations of this group are high.
Seniors Billy Baska (6-0, 185) and Mark Watson (6-0, 190)
both made impacts in their first season as a Bulldog. They both
finished 2008 ranking fifth on the team in tackles with 41. They
should both provide a strong presence at the safety position
this year.
Junior Austin Brown is expected to start at cornerback and
help anchor the secondary. The 6-1, 185 pounder started all
10 games last season and will be counted on for leadership in
2009. Junior Shelton Thigpen (5-11, 165) is expected to start opposite of Brown. Thigpen has started all but two games in his
two-year career as a Bulldog.
Sophomore J.L. Gomez is also expected to play a large role
in the McPherson secondary. Gomez impressed during his first
year recording 50 tackles from his safety spot.
Special Teams
Kickers
For the third straight season, junior Travis Eason (5-10, 170)
will be the primary kicker for the Bulldogs. Eason sits only
three field goals away from tying the McPherson College career record for made field goals.
Unknown will be the punter for the Bulldogs. The position
will be decided during fall camp.

2008 Review
McPherson College Football
I
njuries, turnovers, and untimely penalties played major
roles in the Bulldogs’ 2008 season.
The Bulldogs opened their schedule with 37-21 win at
Bethany. But, during the win the Bulldogs lost their top two
quarterbacks, one for the season with a broken leg and the other to a concussion resulting in two games out and two more of
limited play. The win though was a precursor of the season-tocome for junior Jeff Paulson as he led the McPherson defense
with 16 tackles and was later named KCAC “Defensive Player
of the Week.”
With freshman Aaron Sunday now under center in his first
collegiate action, the Bulldogs fell to a more physical Kansas
Wesleyan 38-10. What a difference one week of live action
would make as Sunday came back to lead McPherson to a 41-7
win over Southwestern, throwing for 284 yards and two touchdowns the next week, a performance for which he was named
the KCAC “Offensive Player of the Week.”
The next two weeks saw McPherson drop a disappointing
30-28 decision to the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth
before returning home and falling in front of a Homecoming
crowd to Sterling, 28-0.
Week six found the Bulldogs on the road for their lone
non-conference game, and the change of scenery was good as
McPherson handled Haskell Indian Nations, 43-14, in Lawrence and evened their season record at 3-3. A highlight of the
Haskell win was senior Dwight Hale, Colorado Springs, Colo.,
rushing for 102 yards on just three carries and catching seven
passes for another 153 yards.
Weeks seven and eight found the Bulldogs taking on two
nationally ranked opponents. The Bulldogs played well, but
their lack of depth and costly turnovers resulted in losses to
Ottawa 45-35, and Friends 41-17.
With the season heading into its final two weeks, McPherson traveled first to Hillsboro where they saw a 19-0 lead disappear in the wind and cold, and fell 23-19. It was then back
to McPherson Stadium for their season finale against a Bethel
team that had spent most of the season ranked in the NAIA
national polls. Disappointed with their performance at Tabor,
the Bulldogs bounced back and wrapped up a second consecutive season with a 28-23 win over the Threshers. Following the
Bethel win, sophomore kicker Travis Eason was named the
NAIA National “Special Teams Player of the Week.”
Senior Gary Cox ended the regular season leading the
NAIA in all-purpose yards, averaging 175.1 per game. Cox’s
total yards have come on 62 pass receptions for 902 yards, 28
kickoff returns for 680 yards, including one for a school record
100 yards and a game opening touchdown against Ottawa,
and another 164 yards on 14 punt returns.
Jeff Paulson ranked seventh among all NAIA defenders
with an average of 11.9 tackles per game. Against #6 ranked
Friends, the Limon, Colo., junior totaled a career high 17 tackles and garnered two pass interceptions, returned for a total of
70 yards.

Kansas Wesleyan 38 , McPherson 10
Clyde and Glenn Lindstrom Field

September 13 at Lindsborg, KS
September 20 at Salina, KS
The Bulldogs traveled to Lindsborg on Saturday and spoiled the Swedes’
celebration of their brand new artificial turf surface on Clyde and Glenn
Lindstrom Field of the Philip Anderson Athletic Complex with a 37-21 win
over Bethany in the inaugural collegiate football game on the new surface.
McPherson trailed by only five at halftime after being down by 12
points in the second quarter. With 4:23 remaining until the break, sophomore
quarterback Josh White scored on a 3-yard run to narrow the Dogs halftime
deficit to 21-16.
But after trailing all but six minutes of the first half, the second half
belonged to the Bulldogs as they rang up 299 yards of second half offense
including 208 yards passing and 21 unanswered points to pull out the 37-21
win. Just as important though was the Bulldog defense, led by Jeff Paulson’s
16 tackles, nine of which were unassisted. The Bulldogs were true to their
name, limiting the Swedes to only 14 yards rushing and 110 yards of total offense in the second half after being burnt for 263 yards in the first half on 105
yards rushing and 158 yards passing.
The Bulldogs ran into an old fashioned, power running football team on
Saturday as Kansas Wesleyan churned out 371 yards rushing and handed
McPherson its first defeat of the 2008 season, 38-10.
A week after the Coyotes lost to #17 Bethel using a spread offense
and throwing the ball 35 times, KWU put the pass on the back burner and
pounded the ball straight at the Bulldogs, running the pigskin 65 times while
throwing only 17 passes and controlling the ball 82 plays to McPherson’s 60
and dominating the clock, 35 minutes to McPherson’s 25.

McPherson College Football
McPherson 41, Southwestern 7
Univ. of Saint Mary 30, McPherson 28
September 27 at McPherson, KS
October 4 at Leavenworth, KS
McPherson Stadium
Trailing 7-0 at halftime, the Bulldogs scored 41 unanswered second half
points on their way to a 41-7 win over the Builders of Southwestern College.
The win by McPherson was only its 11th in the 53-year history of the
series with Southwestern, and represented the Bulldogs’ first over Southwestern since 2003. The 41 points scored was the most scored by a McPherson
team in the history of the series, topping the 39 points scored in losing to
Southwestern (39-73) in 1998.
Sunday ended the evening with 268 yards of total offense as he threw
for 284 yards on 20 of 30 passes with two touchdowns and one interception,
but was thrown for -16 yards rushing. His 20 completions were the first time
a Bulldog quarterback had connected on 20 passes in a game since Wade
Pederson competed 28 against Bethel on Nov. 3, 2001.
Gary Cox was on the receiving end of a career high 10 passes, good
for 101 yards, marking his second straight 100-yard game. Cox’s 10 receptions were the most by a Bulldog receiver since Sean Eason caught 15 passes
against Bethel on Nov. 3, 2001.
McPherson College cranked out 458 yards of offense, but special teams break
downs and untimely thrown flags came back to haunt the Bulldogs as they
dropped a 30-28 decision to the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth.
Bulldog freshman quarterback Aaron Sunday won the statistical duel
with the Spires’ Daniel Robles, the KCAC passing leader. Sunday finished the
day career highs 23 of 35 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns, but two
interceptions, while Robles was 27 of 46 for 270 yards, one touchdown, and
one interception.
Gary Cox went over the 100-yard receiving mark for the third straight
game, pulling in nine passes for 112 yards and one TD. Stephen Harrison
caught eight passes, good for 68 yards and two touchdowns.
USM rushed for 194 yards on 43 carries while the Bulldogs picked up
143 yards on 28 attempts.

McPherson Stadium
Adair Austin Stadium
October 25 at McPherson, KS
November 1 at Wichita, KS
The Bulldogs entered Saturday’s encounter with 22nd ranked Ottawa University as heavy underdogs, but the Dogs carried the battle to the Braves, not
trailing until the final 32 seconds of third quarter, and still within three points
in the final minute of the game.
A 41-yard touchdown run with 39 left in the contest allowed the Braves
to escape with a 45-35 win, a game that was closer than the final statistics
might indicate, thanks to timely special teams and defensive plays by the
Bulldogs.
McPherson finished the afternoon with 313 yards of total offense, 79
yards rushing on 42 attempts and 234 yards passing on 16 of 32 attempts with
three interceptions. Jacob Simon came off the bench to throw for 168 yards on
13 of 23 attempts, the second best passing day of his Bulldog career.
Stephen Harrison caught seven passes for 87 yards and added 84 yards
in kickoff returns while Gary Cox was limited to just three pass receptions for
59 yards, but added 152 yards in kickoff return yardage.
Turnovers on two of their first three possessions, both in Friends’ territory,
and a 22-yard punt set up a pair of Falcon touchdowns, putting the young
Bulldogs in an early hole, and opened the door for sixth ranked Friends’ 4117 win.
McPherson fumbled the ball away at the Falcon 34-yard line on the
Bulldogs’ first play from scrimmage after Friends’ first possession had been
ended by Jeff Paulson’s interception of the Falcons’ second pass attempt of
the game.
McPherson ended the afternoon with 321 yards of total offense, 245 of
which came by way of 16 of 41 passing. Friends ended the day with 499 yards
of offense, 211 rushing and 288 passing.

McPherson closed out its 2008 football season with a 28-23 win over Bethel.
After a season of revolving quarterbacks for the Bulldogs, Jacob Simon
was under center for the season finale, making his only start of the season on
the day of he and his senior teammates were recognized in their final appearances in the Red and White. And, the Leon, Kan., senior brought the curtain
down on his collegiate career in grand fashion.
Throwing for a career high 344 yards and three touchdowns, Simon
connected on 23 of 45 passes. Fourteen of Simon’s completions were split
between fellow senior Gary Cox (9 receptions for 126 yards and one TD) and
junior Stephen Harrison (5 receptions for 123 yards and two touchdowns).
Simon’s 344 yards passing was the most by a Bulldog quarterback since
Wade Pedersen threw for 388 yards against Bethel on Nov. 3, 2001, and his
358 yards of total offense ranks #5 on the Bulldogs’ all-time single game list.
With the win, their collegiate career drew to close for Jacob Simon, Gary
Cox, Dwight Hale, Kiel Stidham, Ripp Harrison, and Chris Ezebunwa.

Cox, Paulson named College Fanz Sports Network NAIA All-Americans
McPherson College senior Gary Cox and junior Jeff Paulson were recently named to the 2008 College Fanz Sports Network NAIA Coaches’ All-American honorable mention team as a wide receiver and linebacker, respectively.
“We are excited about Gary (Cox) and Jeff (Paulson) being recognizing for the seasons they had this past fall,” said McPherson College head coach Brian
Ward.
“Gary is an awesome story. He has really done a lot to deserve this honor. His numbers and ability will be hard to duplicate, and he will be missed. His
toughness and attitude both on and off the field served as an example for everyone involved in our program.”
“Jeff is a great example of how persistence and consistency, both on the field and off, can lead to a great honor like this. Jeff was just relentless in his effort
on the field. For a guy that was playing linebacker for the very first time this year, this honor exceeds everyone’s expectations. He is very deserving of this
honor”.
The selections were made by ten NAIA football coaches along with NAIA expert Jason Dannelly, founder of Victory Sports Network – which is now part of
College Fanz
Dannelly said upon the release of the All-American squads, “The honor teams for this past season are another representation of how great football is at the
NAIA level.”
Gary Cox , a 2001 graduate of Genesis Academy
and transfer from Glendale ( Ariz. ) Junior College, finished the season ranked #1 in the NAIA
in all-purpose yards, averaging 175.1 yards per
game. Named the KCAC Special Teams Player
of the Year, Cox totaled 1,751 yards, combining his receiving yards (902), punt returns (164
yards), kickoff returns (680 yards), and rushing
(5 yards). His 680 yards in kickoff returns was
a new McPherson single season record. Cox
ranked #11 among all NAIA athletes during the
2008 season in punt return yards per game, #13
in pass receiving yards per game, and #14 in
kickoff returns yards per game.
He was a first team All-KCAC selection at wide
receiver after leading the conference in four pass
receiving categories with averages of 90.2 yards
and 6.2 receptions per game and totals of 902 yards on 62 catches, all KCAC
highs. Cox was also named the KCAC second team punt and kickoff returner
after ranking second in the conference in both categories with averages of 11.7
yards per punt and 24.3 yards per kickoff return.
Highlights of Cox’s 2008 season included his return the game’s opening
kickoff against Ottawa University a school record 100 yards for a touchdown
along with his 10 receptions against Southwestern and 168 yards receiving
against Kansas Wesleyan, both of which were Bulldog season highs.
In 2007, Cox led McPherson with 21 pass receptions, good for 284
yards and two touchdowns. He gained 24 yards in six rushing attempts, and
returned 10 punts for 50 yards and was named to the All-KCAC first team as a
kickoff returner.
Cox ended his McPherson playing career with 1,186 yards and six touchdowns on 83 pass receptions, 1,149 yards and two touchdowns on 45 kickoff
returns, 214 yards on 24 punt returns and 29 yards rushing on eight attempts.
“I truly believe Gary was one of the top athletes in our conference,” said
McPherson College head coach Brian Ward. “Any time he touched the ball,
something big happened.”
Jeff Paulson led the KCAC and ranked seventh
in the NAIA with 119 total tackles, 60 of which
were solo. On the season, he was credited with 11
tackles accounting for 44 yards of lost yardage,
four sacks for -17 yards, four pass interceptions
with returns totaling 74 yards, five passes broken
up, and two fumbles recovered.
Named to All-KCAC post-season honors list for
a third straight season, Paulson was twice named
the KCAC Defensive Player of the Week. First, in
the Bulldogs’ season opening win over Bethany
he totaled 16 tackles, nine unassisted, one tackle
for lost yardage and one pass broken up. In the
Bulldogs’ season finale win over Bethel , he was
credited with nine tackles, four unassisted, 3 ½
tackles for 11 yards in lost yardage, 1 ½ sacks,
and one pass broken up.
A 2005 graduate of Limon ( Colo. ) High School, transferred to McPherson after one year at the University of Northern Colorado .
Paulson moved to defensive back from the offensive side of the ball for
the Bulldogs’ midway through the 2007 season and was later named to the
All-KCAC honorable mention squad as a defensive back. He was selected
as the KCAC Defensive Player of the Week following McPherson’s win over
Haskell Indian Nations University when he was credited with 10 tackles, six
unassisted, two tackles for lost yardage, and one pass broken up. Paulson
finished the season with 47 total tackles, 26 of which were unassisted. He
was credited with five tackles for 25 yards of lost yardage, and broke up four
passes. Although limited to just 40 carries because of his switch to defense,
Paulson ranked third among the Bulldogs in rushing, gaining 234 yards with
one touchdown. He completed the one pass he attempted, throwing for 31
yards. Jeff caught seven passes for 70 yards.
Paulson was named to the 2006 All-KCAC second team as a running back
after rushing for 498 yards and three touchdowns on 115 carries.

scholarship, participation, and service’. Our congratulations go out to each of them.”
John Brown is making his first appearance on the
Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete squad. A three-year
letter winner, Brown caught two passes for 19 yards

Program History
McPherson College Football
M
cPherson College was nicknamed the “Bulldogs”
in 1917 by a local sports writer, and others across
the state of Kansas, who saw the College a rising athletic
team that would soon secure high rank among the private,
denominational schools of the state.
It was a 60-pound white English bulldog, “Ben” by name,
after which the College was titled the “Bulldogs.” Ben’s
master was E.D. Verink, then basketball coach at McPherson College. Ben would perform and romp on the court
with his master and team between halves of basketball
games. His fame as a mascot soon spread over the state
as he attended all games, whether at home or on foreign
McPherson College - Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champions -- 1923
courts. A common sight on College Hill of McPherson, was Ben, harnessed and leashed to his master’s bicycle, romping alongside, but more likely in front of
“Coach” as they treked to and from the College along East Euclid Street. Loyal McPherson citizens soon propagated the tale that Ben was pulling Coach Verink
to the games.
F
ootball has been a part of McPherson College since 1920 and has produced many outstanding teams and players over the years. A.C. “Dutch”
Lonborg was McPherson College’s first paid head football coach during the
1921 and 1922 seasons when his teams compiled a 10-9-0 win-loss record.
Lonborg left McPherson to become head basketball coach and assistant
football coach at Washburn in Topeka before going on to become the head
basketball coach at Northwestern University in 1927 and then returning to his
alma mater, The University of Kansas, as athletic director in 1950. The Bulldogs won their first conference football title in 1923 under coach
Floyd Mishler when they compiled a 7-1-1 mark. Their second conference
title came in 1952 under coach C.E. Woodard as the ‘Dogs went 8-0-1. The
Bulldogs were a national small college football power in the early 1950s under coaches C.E. Woodard and Sid Smith. From 1951 through 1953, McPherson College was 23-3-1, and stood 57-30-1 for the decade. After wining the
1952 KCAC title the Bulldogs finished second in the conference race in 1953
McPherson College - Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champions -- 1952
and 1958. After the 1952 season, Woodard left McPherson to become head coach at Southern Methodist University, and Sid Smith would take over the reins. Smith would go on to become the winningest football coach in Bulldog history with 62 gridiron wins.
Since 1996, McPherson has consistently produced nationally ranked offenses and defenses, headed by All-KCAC and All-American players.

abor Day 1952 found 48 young men reporting for the opening day of
practice under head coach Chalmer “Woody” Woodard. Expectations
were high! Twenty-one letter winners and four others returned from the 1951
squad that finished second in the Kansas Conference race with a 7-2 record. Gone were nine lettermen, including All-Conference defensive players Loren
Blickenstaff and “Chuck” Petefish, but Woodard had almost his complete offense back, one that had averaged over 400 yards per game in 1951.
The Bulldogs opened their season with back-to-back, shutout road wins
over Bethel (33-0) and Concordia Teachers (46-0). With a home win over Baker
(52-13), the Canines win streak over two years reached six. Week four found
McPherson traveling to Emporia where the Dogs avenged their lone conference defeat of 1951 as they turned back the defending conference champions,
College of Emporia (26-20). That was the first of four straight homecoming
contests the Bulldogs would participate in. Returning to McPherson for its
own homecoming on October 18, the Bulldogs rolled over Kansas Wesleyan
(38-14) in front of over 3,000 fans for its eighth
straight win. Next on the schedule was a road trip
to Liberty, Missouri, to take on undefeated William Jewell.
Billed as the battle of “small college giants,”
McPherson and William Jewell both entered the
contest undefeated and ranked first and second
nationally in team rushing among small colleges
(NAIA) while their rankings were reversed in total
team offense. In total team defense, the Bulldogs
were ranked sixth nationally while the Cardinals
were eighth. To say this game had regional importance might have been an understatement. Following an overnight stay in Ottawa the six-vehicle
caravan carrying the team to Liberty was given
a Kansas Highway Patrol escort to Kansas City. There they were met by the Missouri Highway Patrol, which escorted them through the city at high
speed. It was said that between KC and Liberty, some of the team vehicles
could not keep up with the Patrol traveling at over 70 mph.
The game, which was carried by the most powerful radio station in Kansas City in preference to the scheduled Big-7 conference tilt, saw the host team
jump out to a quick 6-0 lead before Eddie Ball went 85 yards with the ensuing
kickoff to put the Bulldogs up 7-6 after Dwight McSpadden’s point after kick. Midway through the second period McPherson found itself down 20-7, but
suddenly the Dogs found a spark and fought back. A McSpadden touchdown and PAT late in the half pulled McPherson within six (20-14) and gave
the Dogs momentum going into halftime. Twice in third quarter McPherson
saw scoring drives stopped by lost fumbles deep in Jewell territory. Midway
through the final period the Bulldogs recovered a Cardinal fumble one play
after fumbling the ball away at the Jewell 22. McPherson capitalized on the
recovery as Wayne Blickenstaff hit Bob Bechtel with an 11-yard touchdown
pass, but the PAT failed, leaving the score 20-20. William Jewell drove to the
McPherson five-yard line before the Dog’s defense snuffed out the Cardinals’
final attempt. But time ran out on the Dogs’ final drive. Final Score, TIE
GAME, 20-20!
With the non-conference tie as their only blemish on a perfect season,
the Bulldogs journeyed to unbeaten Ottawa the next week. With the Kansas
Conference title on the line, the Dogs outlasted the host Braves for a 47-40 win. The Bulldogs returned to the friendly confines of McPherson Stadium for the
final two weeks of the season. A pounding of their in-county rival, Bethany
(72-13) clinched the Dogs’ first conference title since 1923. The final week of
the season saw McPherson post a school record 75 points as it ran over Friends
in a non-conference, season finale.
For the season McPherson outscored its opposition 409 points to 140,
gained 3,693 yards of offense (410 yards per game) while giving up 1,554 (172
yards per game). Gene Smith rushed for 1,206
yards while Eddie Ball rushed for 1,039. Wayne
Blickenstaff was 35 of 71 passing for 512 yards
and only two interceptions. Dwight McSpadden
was the leading receiver, catching 14 passes for
203 yards and five touchdowns while Bob Bechtel
caught 10 passes for 131 yards and four scores.
McSpadden was the leading scorer with 105
points, a school record he would better the next
season with 109.
Four seniors (all McPherson High graduates), Howard Mehlinger, Paul Heidebrecht, Bob
Bechtel, and Roland Delay, had played their final
season in the cardinal and white. George Keim
and Wayne Blickenstaff would receive Little AllAmerican recognition at the season’s end. Eight
Bulldogs were named to All-Kansas Conference
first team honors. John Robison (LB), Bob Peel
(DE), and George Keim (DL) were named to the first team defense while Eddie
Ball (RB), Gene Smith (RB), George Keim (OL), Bob Powell (OL), Roland Delay
(OL), and Jack Richardson (C) were named to the first team offense. Receiving
second team honors were Wayne Blickenstaff (RB), Bob Peel (TE), Bob Bechtel
(TE), Dwight McSpadden (DB), Eddie Frantz (DE). Ten other Bulldogs were
named honorable mention either offense or defense: Dwight McSpadden, Vernon Petefish, Lowell Hoch, Steve Bersuch, Tommy O’Dell, Clive Sharpe, Alvin
Fishburn, Bill Smith, Bill Goering, and Howard Mehlinger. Head coach Chalmer Woodard would leave McPherson College that
spring to assume the head coaching position at Southern Methodist University
in Dallas, Texas. But, the Dogs would come back under coach Sid Smith to
go 8-1 in 1953 and finish second in the Kansas Conference, thus completing a
three-year record of 23-3-1, the best three-year run in school history.
Chamler E. “Woody” Woodward
Coach Woodward - 1952
His tenure at McPherson College was only 2½ years, but his influence on Bulldog athletics carries on even to this day.
Coach Woodard came to McPherson College as head coach and athletic director following a highly successful coaching career at Lawrence (Kan.) High School where he was instrumental in establishing one of the nation’s premier football
programs. At Lawrence High, Woodard compiled an overall record of 58-6-2, including four undefeated seasons and
mythical state championships, in his seven seasons as the Lions’ head football coach.
At McPherson College, “Woody” took over a Bulldog football program that had won only once in its last 23 games,
and was mired in the midst of a 19-game conference losing streak.
On October 25th, 1952, the Bulldogs journeyed to Liberty, Missouri, to meet William Jewell College, in a match-up
many felt was for the mythical small college national championship. Both teams entered the contest ranked at the top
of the nation’s small colleges, both offensively and defensively. With the game being broadcast live on regional radio, in
place of the regularly scheduled “Big 6 Game of the Week”, the teams battled to a 20-20 tie; the only blemish on either
team’s season.
Woodard’s success wasn’t confined to just football. His basketball teams placed second in 1952 and 1953 after moving
up the conference standing into a tie for fourth his first season. In his two years of heading the track & field program, his
teams would place third and then second in the conference meet, and would set 17 school records.
Following the end of the 1953 basketball season, Woodard would resign his positions at McPherson College to become the
head football coach at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas.
Bringing together young men from McPherson and area schools, and combining them with young men of Brethren background from Idaho to Iowa, Woodard would forever leave his mark forever on McPherson College athletics.
