It is with some sadness this week that we reflect on the passing of Br Edward Becker, who has
more recently been living in our Brothers community. Ed passed away in St George Hospital
last Friday. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer a few weeks ago and his death was rather
sudden.
Parents would recognise Br Ed through his appearances at our Celebration Masses and for his
quiet, calm support of the College. Just a few weeks ago, I was privileged to receive a “special
visit” from Ed. We chatted about the progress of the College, and how much he admired the
hard working and generous teachers.
Br Ed also spoke endearingly of our students and commented “De La
Salle Cronulla seems to be a wonderful place to go to school”. I guess
Ed was able to place into perspective the opportunities our students and
we have as a community, given he spent much of his life working in
schools in PNG and in North Western Australia.
We pray for his eternal rest and for the comfort of his Brothers at
Cronulla.

Parent Forum… My thanks to the par ents
who joined Mrs Morrison and myself for an
informative “Listening Forum” last Wednesday evening. Although relatively small in
attendance numbers, the level of conversation was high and the information collated
will prove to be both very affirming and useful in establishing future leadership challenges. For our parents response to the question:
" hat do you see as critical areas of focus/
W
development"

Year 12 Parent/Teacher/Student Evening:
Don’t miss out – please make your bookings
now. This evening will support your son/
daughter enormously as research tells us that
students can improve their results if they
implement the learning and feedback from
the Trial HSC. All students should attend
with their parent(s).

Year 12 Graduation… As we move closer
to the final few weeks of Year 12 secondary
schooling, please note the communication
letter sent to all families last week. The letter
outlines valuable information and sets out
clear behavioural expectations of our students. Participation in the Graduation Assembly, Mass, and Year 12 Formal is a wonderful celebration of hard work, fun, strong and
positive relationships, and a sense of satisfaction. It is a privilege that should be earned!
Year 11 Final Preliminary Examinations..
All Year 11 students are encouraged to begin
preparation for these examinations. Specifically, they should be working with their
teachers to hone examination techniques that
help them to demonstrate their learning.
These exams lead up to the Year 12 Graduation Assembly. Please note, all Year 11 students must attend school on Thursday
17 September to complete final English
Exams and to attend the Graduation Assembly.

Year 11… over these next few weeks our Year 11 students
are preparing for their final Year 11 examinations. I would
encourage them to test out their study habits and work
through a suitable timetable and methods of study applicable
for the courses they are undertaking. Their classroom teachers
can give specific support and feedback on how best to prepare
including regular practice of exam style questions. Year 12
students are also now working closely with their peers and
teachers for each course to maximise their preparation for the
Higher School Certificate.
While this is an important focus for our students they must
have a balance in their lives. They need sufficient rest, to eat
well and participate in healthy exercise in order to be able to
perform at their best. Teachers are monitoring our student’s
wellbeing and are watchful that students don’t become over
anxious during these times. Parents/guardians have a vital role
to play in helping their son’s/daughter’s to work hard and
maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep a balanced approach to
their studies.
We will be having our regular guest speaker work with our
students this Thursday 20 August, Mr Paul Dillon. Paul is an
expert in the study of Drugs & Alcohol and its impact on
young people. He will be speaking with both our Year 11 and
12 students as well as our Year 10 students from Our Lady of
Mercy College and De La Salle College Caringbah.
A reminder to all our students that we have asked you not to
park in nearby Grovesnor Crescent as it is too narrow for cars
to park either side, recently the access of residents and the
garbage trucks has been blocked in which the council were
informed. We do have regular visits by the council parking
rangers and so we continue to encourage you to drive safely
to and from school and park with courtesy for our residents.

YEAR 12… may I take this oppor tunity to congratulate all
Year 12 students for their hard work in the lead up to their Trial
HSC examinations and their continuing commitment to their studies in the last few weeks of term .
Congratulations also to the Visual Arts and Design and Technology students who have submitted their HSC major works, as well
as the Languages, Dance, Drama and Music students who have
completed their HSC performances.
Final Year 12 reports are currently being processed and will distributed before the end of term. I encourage all students to ‘take
on board’ report comments as part of the overall teacher feedback
since the Trial HSC exams. The Year 12 Parent Teacher Evening
will take place on Tuesday 25th August. Bookings can be made
on line as has been past practise.
School based assessment final marks and ranks are being collated
and will be sent to BOSTES. This mark will be used by BOSTES
to form part of the final HSC mark.
Also a final reminder to students to log onto schools online on the
BOSTES website, to check the accuracy of their HSC course details, and see me immediately if there are any problems.
Year 11… I wish all Year 11 students well during the Preliminary
examinations, scheduled for week 9 and 10 of this term. I encourage students to continue their preparations for their exams by undertaking a solid study regime throughout the exam period.
A reminder that if students are absent from an assessment task,
they must ensure that they abide by the College Assessment policy. This is located in the student diary, as well as the College
website. Students were also provided with a hard copy of the policy at the beginning of the year.
If absent from an examination the following procedures MUST be
followed:


the student’s first day back at school)

Help needed…
Lasallian and Mercy High Tea
On Saturday September 5th, De La Salle Catholic College
Cronulla are hosting a High Tea to raise funds to support the work
of Mercy Works and the Lasallian Foundation. The Lasallian Foundation project that we are supporting is the Community Education
Services in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This facility provides education to
pre-school children, nutrition programs for mothers and children
and education and skills training for older boys and girls.
Mercy works supports long term development projects in Papua
New Guinea, Timor Leste and Australia. They work with the very
poor and work alongside communities to achieve goals in health
and education.
The hand over process is an important step in our Catechist partnership with St Aloysius and Burraneer Bay Primary School, involving many people and taking several weeks. I am pleased to say
that there have been many interested Year 11 students who are
currently making application to be part of the program. Following
the application process they will observe lessons and prepare to
take on this responsibility. St Aloysius will also assist in providing
instruction, sharing teaching material. I would also like to thank
one of our parents, Mrs Gamsaragan for taking the time to also
share her ideas and expertise, with our interested students. It is
wonderful to see the community working so well together.
