Dear Lehrman Parent, To make back to school supply shopping easier for our parents for grades K through 5, and to help raise funds for the Lehrman Parent Association, we would like to introduce a new website to you: www.mykleo.com. Kleo was created by Jamie Rosenberg, a fellow Lehrman parent. We have been working closely with Jamie and Jodi Bruce to make this new resource available to you and we are very excited about it. What’s great about Kleo is the ability to do all of your back to school supply shopping with only a click of the mouse. All of the items purchased on the site will be shipped directly to your home. This will relieve the need to run around to different stores in order for you to complete your back to school supply shopping the week before school starts – Wednesday, August 22, 2012. Here is how works: • The PA created a Lehrman account on mykleo.com You can access the link to this account on our web site—lehrmanschool.org— under the PA tab • All of the back-to-school supply lists have been collected from the teachers, so Jamie has created an online version of them on the website. You will always have access to the printable lists from the Lehrman website, lehrmanschool.org (via the hot link in the upper left hand corner of the home page), and you can still choose to shop in any manner you prefer. • At mykleo.com you can select your items and check out with a credit card; the supplies will be shipped directly to your door. • At the end of the checkout process you have an option to make a voluntary donation to the PA. • A percentage of the total sales will be donated to the PA as well. The funds collected will be used to help fund various PA sponsored events throughout the year. We are excited to offer this new service to you and we would like to remind you that it is voluntary. Please do not hesitate to let us know your thoughts and to contact us at [email protected] if you should have any questions about the process. Have a great summer! Please select three books of interest to your child from the list below. Any of the recommended books may be purchased locally or borrowed from the Public Library. After reading both, choose one book and complete the attached “My Book Box” activity or they can also report on their book using any technology they would like such as video book trailer, PowerPoint, or Prezi – among a host of others – be creative and have fun! The “My Book Box” project is due the first day of school. Have fun and enjoy your summer reading! MY BOOK BOX What you will need: a shoebox or other small box colored construction paper white paper crayons glue an envelope pebbles, twigs, cotton or any other object to help you make your scenery Directions: Line the inside of the box with light-colored construction paper. Use crayons/markers to add details for a background scene. Use pebbles, twigs or other objects to build a three-dimensional scene relating to the book inside the box. Cover the outside of the box with different colors of construction paper. Write the title, author, and your name on white paper to fit on the top of the box. Glue it on. Write a summary of the book to fit on the back of the box. Glue it on. Draw and label the characters to fit on one end of the box. Glue them on. Cut ten strips of white paper to fit inside the envelope. Write ten important words from the story on the strips. Put them in the envelope. Glue the envelope to the other end of the box. If you would like to use other materials, please feel free to do so. Be creative and have fun! RECOMMENDED BOOKS I CAN-READ I-Can Read books are perfect for first graders who are going into second. We like to describe them as short chapter books, since they are just long enough. The vocabulary is usually controlled and consistent and will give readers a lot of practice reading high-fluency words. In addition, many of the books have memorable characters and a wonderful sense of humor. Again, some are slightly easier than others, so a quick review is always wise. CHAPTER BOOKS Some first-into-second graders will be ready for chapter books this summer. The books listed below have themes that we feel are perfect for this age group. In addition, the vocabulary in each book is straight forward and word choice is fairly controlled. We also tried to choose chapter books that are not too long, but should satisfy a reader who wants to stretch a little over the summer.
