Collaborative Classrooms Quick Guide
Instructions are for VEC rooms 404/405, 902/903, 1202/1203, 1302/1303, and 1402/1403. Hammer Lower Level
rooms 103, 203, 204 and 205 can use Front Projection Screen instructions, but do not have a Rear Video Wall.
Main A/V Controls
Always use the touch panel mounted on the wall at the front of the room,
near the side of the projector screen.
• If in standby, press anywhere on the touch screen to wake it.
• Volume and mute buttons on the right of the touch panel screen help
control audio coming from both front and back screens in the room.
• To temporarily stop projection use the Blank or On/Off option in the
touch panel for the Projector (front) or Video Wall (back). Tap the same
option again to resume.

When done using the room press the OFF button on the touch panel to power down A/V equipment.
Use the Front Projection Screen With Your Computer
1. Select Presentation Mode on the room’s touch panel (image above).
2. Connect the computer to Mercury or Athens secure wireless. See
http://www.cumc.columbia.edu/it/wireless for instructions if needed.
3. If the Solstice app is already installed on the computer, open it and
skip to step 4. To quickly install Solstice:
• Open the computer’s browser and type in the web address shown on
the projection screen
• Follow prompts to download, install, and open Solstice.

4. Solstice will show a list of Discovered Displays, double-click on the room/display you are using.
5. Type in the 4 digit screen code from the room’s projection screen.
6. When the key is accepted select what you’d like to show on the display: • Desktop - everything on your computer screen
• App Window - choose open window(s) on your computer
• Media File - show a picture, video or audio file for playback
7. When done click Stop Sharing in Solstice on your computer.

8. Tap the OFF button in the room’s touch panel to turn off A/V equipment.
Use the Rear Video Wall (MultiTaction)
1. Select Collaboration Mode on the room’s wall-mounted touch panel, and make sure
the center Video Wall This Room On/Off button is on (green).
2. Go to the video wall and make sure the thumbtack icon in the upper right side of the
display is “pinned”, if not tap it. This prevents the entire screen from zooming in and
out while you are using it.

Video Wall menus and icons not mentioned below may not be supported.
Open Files from a USB Key
1. Plug your USB key into any port in the black box attached to the side of the video wall.
2. If prompted use the on-screen keyboard to type in any encryption password for the USB key.
3. On the right edge of the screen, tap the USB key icon to open
a window showing your files. IMPORTANT: Only PDFs, .jpg or
.png images, and video files may be opened on the display without using an additional program.
4. Tap and drag the file onto a blank area of the screen (see
Manipulate Items below for more help using files).
5. To close the USB key file window, click the X in its upper right
corner. To open it again repeat step 3.

6. BEFORE UNPLUGGING YOUR USB KEY tap the eject icon on the right
border of its file window.
Internet
1. Press and hold a blank section of the screen to bring up the Finger Menu.
• Search – tap the magnifying glass, then type in your keywords and tap Web Search.
• Web Browser – tap the toolbox, then the globe icon in the outer menu.
2. IMPORTANT: “pin” the browser by tapping the thumbtack icon at the top of its border. If
the browser is not pinned you will not be able to click links or scroll.

Manipulate Items On Screen
Select – tap the item to bring up a border with “widget” icons on the top and right.
Move – tap and drag any item to move it around the screen.
Zoom and resize - use pinch and spread finger and hand gestures.
Pin – tap the top “pin” icon to stop an item from moving, then tap again to release.
Remove – tap More on the right, then the trash icon (this removes the item from
on screen only and will not delete the copy on your USB key).

PDF page through – pin the PDF on screen, then swipe right or left
Video – pin the video, then tap it to pause or resume playback. Pausing will bring up a
location bar at the bottom and volume in the lower right.
Annotate – tap the brush icon (on the right border for some items, or from the Finger
Menu to use on screen) and select the stroke color and weight (slider) to free write. You
must have an IR pen and erase card to annotate.
Notes – tap the note icon at the top of the Finger Menu, select a color, then tap the
keyboard icon to type or the brush icon to free write (IR pen required).
Undo/Redo – open the Finger Menu and tap the left-pointing arrow to undo your last
action, or right to redo.

Close the Video Wall
When done, Remove all items left on screen (see above) or they will remain for the next presenter. Powering off
the wall and A/V equipment does not remove items!
Tap OFF in the lower right corner of the main A/V touch panel at the front of the room.
