From The
Lodge President
The busy season is now upon us,
and many plans are in the works for
the coming months.
Dan Haglund
First, a new membership dinner in the push to add members
will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, in the Kringen ballroom. We would like to match or even exceed the new members
recently added to the Mayville and Grand Forks lodges during
their recent dinners.
Next, a Halloween dance with the Front Fenders is planned
for 7:30 to 11:30 pm, Friday, Oct. 30, also in the Kringen ballroom.
And aside from these two events, we are still seeking volunteers for lunches and special events at the Klub/Lodge. Please
call the Klub if you are interested in volunteering - even if it’s just
once a month. Everything helps!
Have a great October, and we see you at Kringen.

This is the time of year to see all the beautiful
leaves on the trees and then watch them fall to the ground. It is also
harvest time and I am in the fields working with the soybeans and
corn. I love this time of year!
More activities will start in October, the Norwegian Language
and Wood Carving classes and our Sunday Dinners. The Book Discussion and Youth Group started in September. Rosemaling classes
go all year. It is not too late to join any of these classes. We will need
more workers for the Sunday dinners. Come and join us and have
good fellowship with other members.
As always, see you at Kringen!

KRINGEN YOUTH KLUBB
Kringen Youth Klubb met Saturday, September 19 for their first meeting since summer break.
Attendance was low, but those who attended had a good time. After meeting and greeting, the youth
were eager to do activities available to them.
Two activity tables were set up with one table for “finger crocheting”, a new activity for our
group, and another table set up for designing and making a troll mask.
We were happy to have Diane Resvick, Kringen Lodge member, introduce the art of finger crocheting to the kids. They were shown completed pieces of crocheted items to peak their interest and
to help them get ideas about what they could make. A variety of bright colored yarn was also available for their selection. Diane used a “hands on” approach to enable each child to better understand
the process. The youth had gained plenty of ideas, and once they had the knack for crocheting, they
were anxious to begin! We observed nice items such as a belt with decorative beads and another item
which was a snake puppet! Troll masks were also quite the attraction which showed great creativity
and interest.
We concluded the morning activities with Norwegian music which was brought to us by our
NDSU student helper, Hanna Johnsen of Norway. The music was lively and fun which prompted a
little dancing!
A special “Thank you” to Diane Resvick and Hanna Johnsen for being such good help to me.
They are a good match for kids!
A small snack and juice was enjoyed before dismissal, and a baggie was given to each youth which
contained materials to make another crocheted item and troll mask at home.
Everyone left happy and in spite of a very small group, it was a fun morning!
In Friendship, “Ha det bra”
Doreen Grobe, Youth Director
P.S. Next Kringen Youth Klubb meeting will be held Saturday, October 10
(10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon) Please circle your calendar.

We all boarded the tour bus not knowing where we were going to go. Our first stop was in Sisseton, SD to the Wahpeton-Sisseton Oyate Nation Adminstration Building. Many questions were
asked and answered by our Oyate tour guide. We were treated to delicious fry bread and a blueberry
dipping sauce and coffee.
Our next stop, where Irene Backlund is saying “hello”, was at the Prairie Sky Game and Ranch
near Veblen, SD. There were 250 Buffalo roaming nearby. We were entertained by Dana Jenson
singing and playing guitar, while we enjoyed a Pitchfork Steak dinner with all the trimmings plus
dessert. Another Mystery Tour was revealed with interesting places and a good time!

KRINGEN POSTEN - OCTOBER 2015
Cultural Corner
A Very Interesting Presentation
at the October 6th
Cultural Night Program
Karen V. Hansen, professor of Sociology and Women’s Studies at Brandeis
University in Massachusetts, has spent more than fifteen years researching the
settlement of the Spirit Lake Dakota Indian Reservation near Devils Lake, North
Dakota. The results of her extended study are very interesting recorded in her
published volume, Encounter on the Great Plains: Scandinavian Settlers and the
Dispossession of the Dakota Indians, 1890-1930. At our October 6th Cultural
Program, she will be our guest speaker, telling us about the little-known history
of the Spirit Lake Dakota Indian Reservation, its unique settlement history and
the results of the United States federal government’s attempt to encourage Native
Americans to become farmers.
One of the main objectives of the federal Dawes Act of 1891 was to lift the
Native Americans out of poverty by allowing them to own individual tracks of
land, based on the European model. Thus, by the authority of the Dawes Act,
the Spirit Lake Reservation was declared an “open reservation” which meant that
European immigrants could also settle on the land of the reservation that the government would classify as “excess” land after the Native Americans had received
their allotments. What especially attracted Professor Hansen to do this study, was
that her maternal grandmother, Helene Haugen Kanten, was one of the Norwegian immigrants who homesteaded land on the Spirit Lake Dakota Indian Reservation. She grew up hearing stories about her grandmother and wanted to find
out more about her life and struggles on the open reservation. The result of her
fifteen-year study is her very interesting book, Encounter on the Great Plains.
The information on the ‘dust jacket’ of the book describes Professor Hansen’s
work much better than I can. There we read, “In 1904, the first Scandinavian settlers moved onto the Spirit Lake Dakota Indian Reservation. These land-hungry immigrants struggled against severe poverty, often becoming the sharecropping tenants of the Dakota landowners. Yet the homesteaders’ impoverishment
did not impede their quest to acquire Indian land, and by 1929 Scandinavians
owned more reservation acreage than their Dakota Neighbors. With this largely
unknown story at its center, Encounter on the Great Plains brings together two
dominant processes in American history: the unceasing migration of newcomers
to North America, and the protracted dispossession of indigenous people who
inhabited the continent.”
Anne Sladky, president of the Hadeland Lag of America, as written an excellent review of Professor Hansen’s book, Encounter on the Great Plains. In her
review, she writes, “Author Karen Hansen provides a fascinating and informative
look at the relationships among the Norwegian homesteaders, the Dakota Indians
and the culture at large. She explores their conflicting perspectives and weaves the
recollections of the people of that area, both European immigrants and the Native
Americans, together to create a remarkably detailed picture of life on the reservations for both groups.”
Our Sons of Norway’s Book Discussion Group, the Lesering, read and discussed Encounter on the Great Plains last year. I know that they will be especially
interested in hearing Professor Hansen tell about her unique research. Even if
you have not read her book, I want to encourage you to come and learn about
this little-known part of our regional history. I know that you will enjoy hearing
Professor Hansen’s interesting presentation. There is a copy of her book in our
Sons of Norway Library. You can check that out. Or, you can purchase a copy of
Encounter on the Great Plains at Zandbroz Variety Store on North Broadway in
Fargo. I look forward to seeing you at this Cultural Program on October 6th.

Kringen Lesering – Book Discussion Group
Kringen Lesering, Book Discussion Group
will meet on Monday noon, October 12th in the
Lounge to discuss Lene Kaaberbol’s The Boy in
the Suitcase. Nina Borg, a Red Cross nurse, wife,
and mother of two, is a compulsive do-gooder who can’t say no to someone who asks for
help—not even when she knows better. When
her estranged friend Karin leaves her a key to a
public locker in the Copenhagen train station,
Nina gets suckered into her most dangerous
project yet. Inside the locker is a suitcase, and
inside the suitcase is a three-year-old boy: naked
and drugged, but alive, -- read the novel to see
what happens!
If you want to read ahead, Lesering’s November selections are The Indian Bride by Karin Fossum and The Hunting Dogs by Jorn Lier Horst, two Scandinavian Crime Fiction books that Dr.
Mitzi Brundale will be discussing in her presentation at our November 3rd Cultural Night Program. Copies of these books are available for sale
at Zandbroz Variety, 420 Broadway. You can also
check them out from local public and university
libraries. We have a limited number of copies at
our Kringen Library that you can check out for
one week. All Kringen members are encouraged
to join our Lesering.

LEIF ERIKSON DAY - OCTOBER 9
Leif Erikson was first acknowledged on a national stage by President Calvin Coolidge in 1925, the official observance of Leif Erikson Day in the United States wouldn’t begin until 1964. It was then that Congress approved a resolution proposed by Hubert H. Humphrey, and then Lyndon B. Johnson declared Leif Erikson Day to be October 9th.
Almost 40 years prior, Calvin Coolidge had acknowledged the idea that Leif had landed on North American shores nearly
500 years before Christopher Columbus. Leif Erikson Day had already been observed in Minnesota and Wisconsin since
the 1930s and took hold in South Dakota, Illinois, Colorado, Washington and California by 1956.
October 9th has no special connection to Leif Erikson, there is no record of the actual date that he set foot on
North America—but the date plays a role in later Norwegian immigration. On October 9, 1825, the sloop “Restaurationen” landed in New York, carrying the first group of Norwegian Quakers, led by renowned pioneer Cleng Peerson.
That passage began a wave of Norwegian immigration that lasted for over 70 years and brought hundreds of thousands of
Norwegians to North American shores.
