Into our 8th year now and closing up on our 200th milestone meeting, you can tell, its been a busy year for the club. Team Kanoo has gone from one act of doing to another. We have been like busy bees, simply producing, producing and producing. We have produced everything and achieved everything, except of course a news letter for 2011-2012. Our July issue of Kan-Talk is a sort of remedial measure. So what if we are off the mark by a month ?? we strive to live by our motto “at Kanoo we Kan.” My sincere thanks to all the dynamic free thinkers, poets, philosophers, toastmaster kids, supporters, proof reader / grammarian of Kanoo. And most specially Savita for her tireless efforts with editing. Without you all, this newsletter would not be seeing the light of day. Warm regards Juliana Rego, ACB,ALB Immediate Past Area 1Gov 2011-2012 About Kanoo Toastmasters Kanoo Toastmasters Club is the local chapter of Toastmasters International. At toastmasters, members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. A typical toastmasters meeting is made up of 20-30 people who meet once or twice a month for an hour or two. At each meeting members have the opportunity to practice conducting meetings, giving impromptu speeches, presenting prepared speeches and offering constructive evaluations. Experienced speakers and beginners alike can benefit from this face to face learning program. From its humble beginnings in Santa Ana California in 1924, the movement has spread to over 116 countries. In UAE alone there are over 70 clubs. To learn more about our club, you are welcome to attend our meetings as a guest on 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at Kanoo, Bur Dubai. Past Div.B Governor’s Message 2011-2012 has been quite an extraordinary year for me in Toastmasters. It has been an exceptional opportunity to serve as your Division Governor. I have to say that in many respects it hasn't been easy and it has been one of the most challenging. I have experienced a lot of painful sharpening moments and made some mistakes along the way but as a result I have learned, grown and achieved worthwhile outcomes despite all the predicaments. Dear Kanoo Toastmasters, as manifested, you have played significant roles during my term of office. Governor, and an active member of this club, MTM Julia Rego for her unselfish commitment and dedication. She has shown such endeavor and willingness to put herself in situations far beyond the call of her responsibilities. I shall never forget her devotion to duty and the friendship that has grown out of that. I know that, with her guidance, this club is in very good hands indeed. May she always continue to support it in her own special way. During the 2nd COT held in January 2012, Area 1 was awarded the best Area in Education and Leadership goals headed by Past Area Governor Juliana. In addition, Area 1 Asst. Area Gov Hubert Miranda, another active member of this club was also given an Outstanding Leadership award by yours truly. Lastly, on behalf of your club members, your Past President Marina Satish received the Outstanding Club award from Division B. I now leave you, warmed by our joint experiences over the year but I am not, of course, finished with Toastmasters. I will, of course, try to do what we all do in our wonderful organization. That is to share with others the skills and talents, I have been given St. John Chrysostom once said, "The rich man is not one who is in possession of much, but one who gives much" . That, I think, sums up our challenge for the future. I wish you the best in all your undertakings. Good luck to the incoming Club Officers (2012-2013) headed by TM Reuben Dias. Most of us have gears we never use. - Charles M. Schulz - The dictionary is the only place where success comes before work. ~ Mark Twain The future has many names: For the weak, it means the unattainable. For the fearful, it means the unknown. For the courageous, it means opportunity. -Victor Hugo Share Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before. — Jacob A. Riis Before Before Before Before Before you act, listen. you react, think. you spend, earn. you criticize, wait. you pray, forgive. -~Ernest Hemingway 3 Mind your Grammar by TM Flavia Miranda, CC Dear Fellow Toastmasters , I’d like to introduce you to two ‘’Old Friends ‘’ , who, though no longer alive. Continue to ‘teach ‘’ , ‘inspire ‘, and ‘motivate ‘ , through their ‘Faithful Legacy ‘ , named ‘English Grammar and Composition ‘’… The two friends in mind are P. C. WREN and H. MARTIN ......in short , ( as one of Charles Dickens’ characters would say )’ WREN AND MARTIN ‘…the authors of the above simple but very user friendly tome.. Many of you probably know them already , as did I in school , and my children too…I’ve found them to be amongst the best in keeping up to date , with the general rules of English grammar , as well as in elucidating the foibles and peculiarities that sometimes dog us in the use of this very universal and ever dynamic language.. I’ve selected most parts of the section on The Definite and Indefinite Articles , because it is one that sees the most defaults….It is impossible to go into every area , but the ones that recur most often are in this area ..there are others , that we can go into at a later date .. Till then , do hope this helps to brush up the old grey cells , and refresh our speeches as we attain ever greater communication and leadership skills .. Happy Reading ! Best wishes always , Flavia Miranda …M. A. English Literature …CC Toastmasters. Grammar -The Long and the short of it !! There are two Articles – a ( or an) and the. A or an is called the Indefinite Article, because it leaves indefinite the person or thing spoken of; as, a doctor, that is, any doctor. The is called the Definite Article, because it points out some particular person or thing; as, He saw the doctor, meaning some particular doctor. The choice between a and an is determined by sound. Before a word beginning with a vowel sound an is used; as, An ass, an enemy, an inkstand, an orange, an umbrella, an hour, an honest man, an heir. It will be noticed that the words hours, honest, heir begin with a vowel sound, as initial consonant h is not pronounced. initial consonant h is not pronounced. Before a word beginning with a consonant sound a is used; as, A boy, a reindeer , a woman, a yard, a horse, a hole, also a university, a union, a European, a ewe, a unicorn, a useful article. Because these words (university, union, etc) begin with the consonant sound, that of, yu. Similarly we say, a one – rupee note, such a one, a one eyed man. Because one begins with the consonant sound of w. Before words beginning with h and not accented on the first syllable, and is often used; as, An historical novel, an hotel. The Definite Article The is used – (1) When we speak of a particular person or thing, or one already referred to; as, book you want is out of print The I dislike the fellow Let us go to the club (2) When a singular noun is meant to represent a whole class; as, The cow is a useful animal. [Or we may say, “Cows are useful animals”] The horse is noble animal. The cat loves comfort. The rose is the sweetest of all flowers. The banyan is a kind of fig tree. [Do not say, “A kind of fig tree” this is a common error.] Note that the two nouns man and woman used in the general sense to denote the whole class never have either article. Man is the only animal that uses fire. Woman is man’s mate (3) With names of gulfs, rivers, seas, oceans, groups of islands and mountain-ranges; as, The Persian Gulf. The Ganges is considered holy by the Hindus. London is on the Thames. The Red Sea. The Indian Ocean. The British Isles. The Laccadive Islands. The Himalayas lie to the North of India. 5 (4) Before the names of certain books; as, The Vedas, the Puranas, the Iliad, the Ramayana. But we say – Homer’s Iliad, Valmiki’s Ramayana. (5) Before common nouns which are names of things unique of their kind; as, The sun, the sky, the ocean, the sea, the earth. [Note – Sometimes the is placed before a Common noun to give it the meaning of an Abstract noun; as, At last the warrior (the warlike or martial spirit) in him was thoroughly aroused.] (6) Before a Proper noun only when it is qualified by an adjective or a defining adjectival clause; as, The great Caesar: the immortal Shakespeare. The Mr. Roy whom you met last night is my uncle. (7) Superlatives; as, The darkest cloud has a silver lining. (8) With ordinals; as, He was the first man to arrive. The ninth chapter of the book is very interesting. (9) Before musical instruments; as, He can play the flute. (10) Before an adjective when the noun is understood; as, The poor are always with us. (11) Before a noun (with emphasis) to give the force of a superlative; as, The Verb is the word (= chief word) in a sentence. (12) As an adverb, with Comparatives; as, The more the merrier. (= by how much more, by so much the merrier) 6 The Indefinite Article is used – In its original numerical sense of one; as, A word to the wise is sufficient. The Article is omitted – (1) Before a common noun used in its widest sense; as, Man is mortal. What kind of flower is this? (2) Before names of materials; as, Gold is a precious metal. Cotton grows in India, America and Egypt. (3)Usually before Proper nouns; as, Delhi is the capital of India. Bombay is a big city. Newton was a great philosopher, Note – When the Article is used before Proper nouns, they become Common nouns; as, This man is a second Newton [i.e. a philosopher as great as Newton], He was the Napoleon of his age [i.e. the greatest general of his time]. Bombay is the Manchester of India [i.e. the great manufacturing city]. HE is the Shakespeare of the country (i.e. the greatest poet). (4) Before Abstract nouns used in a general sense; as, Wisdom is the gift of heaven. Falsehood is odious. Honesty is the best policy. Virtue is its own reward. Note – An Abstract noun, when it is qualified by an adjective or an adjectival phrase or clause, may have the article; as, The wisdom of Solomon is famous. He showed a courage worthy of an older man. I cannot forget the kindness with which he treated me. PS: Mind your Grammar!! I’ll be watching. Signing off… Flavia 7 The Much Needed Nudge - TM Hubert Miranda, ACB/ALB VPE 2011-12 I had heard about Toastmasters International many, many years ago. I was vaguely aware that it had something to do with public speaking, but for some strange reason I thought it was for the elite, those rich and famous intellectuals. I perceived it as something beyond my reach, both socially as well as financially, till one day, two years ago I was invited to a Toastmasters meeting at the Friends of Yoga Toastmasters Club in Deira, by its founding president Toastmaster Abdul Rehman, CC, CL. I was impressed but I thought it was too late for me to be a member. I was nudged into joining and I have never looked back. Six weeks later I was nudged into being a part of the executive committee, I am glad I agreed. Next I was nudged into accepting the role at this club as Vice President Membership, and then into taking up the responsibility of Vice President Education. Every time I was nudged, my immediate response was an emphatic “NO!”… followed by a “Why not?” Its two years now and I could easily say that these have been, possibly the best two years of my life in every way. Now as I entered my third year into this Toastmasters journey, I was nudged again.... this time, to be the Area Governor of Area No 1, Division B, and District 20. As usual, I resisted, and not surprisingly I accepted the responsibility. This has been a roller-coaster ride and I am enjoying every minute of it. I have loved the concept of Toastmasters International; I admire the man who had this vision, which to day is the mission of over 270,000 people like me all over the world. And this is how it all began. The year was 1924 and the location was a small room at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, USA. A small group of young men were listening to a slightly-built, dark-haired man wearing glasses. They listened as Dr. Ralph Smedley, the founder of Toastmasters, explained that their careers and future success were linked to their ability to communicate. He encouraged these young men to help each other develop their communication and leadership skills and to use these skills for the good of society. From those humble beginnings, Toastmasters International has experienced explosive growth. Today hundreds of thousands of people speak in more than 13,000 clubs in 116 countries. For 88 years, Toastmasters has been building successful speakers and leaders on an unprecedented scale. Every year, approximately 900 new Toastmasters clubs are formed worldwide. Of these clubs, 60% - about 540 – are corporate clubs. Unlike community clubs, these are sponsored by a corporation with meetings held on corporate premises. Most Corporate clubs are not open to outsiders but they use the same Toastmasters materials and they follow the same standards and procedures as do community clubs. As the incoming Area Governor of Area one, I have a simple vision… to add two corporate clubs and one community club to our Area with thirty plus members per Club by July 2013. It’s a simple vision that requires just a simple nudge from you to help change someone’s life as TM Abdul Rehman changed mine. Every year, approximately 900 new clubs are formed worldwide 8 TESTIMONIAL - THE PICK From: Sheebkumar Vilakkumadatil <[email protected]> Date: Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 3:36 PM Subject: 198 th Meeting of Kanoo Toastmasters To: Reuben Dias <[email protected]>, Praveen Gupta <[email protected]>, [email protected] Dear Reuben , Siva & Praveen , I enjoyed your 198 th meeting thoroughly , each moment was precious . If you know of anyone who has been dodging the call of toastmasters, this article may help. Myth 1: I don't need Toastmasters because I have been giving presentations for years. Reality 1: ...and you are probably using the same techniques you started with years ago. Toastmasters is a way to expand and modernize your presentation style. You will get honest feedback about your style and good suggestions for alternative techniques. Myth 2: I don't need Toastmasters because I don't give speeches. Reality 2: What if your boss asks for a status report on your project? What if you have to talk to someone on the phone to ask a question or give information? What about when you present an idea at a staff meeting? The more you consider your business and personal conversations as "presentations", the more care you will give that conversation and the more professional it will be. Toastmasters will help you get that professional edge. Myth 3: I'm not smart enough. I'll be embarrassed. I can't think of anything to talk about. Reality 3: Everyone is smart enough. Everyone has things that interest them and which they can share. You won't be any more embarrassed than you are about other things when with friends. Have you got a hobby? What is your job like? Do you have kids, a spouse, and other family? Have you ever fixed something? Where did you go on your last vacation? You have lots to say! Myth 4: The other members are already good speakers. I'd be nervous and they would laugh. Reality 4: While the current Toastmaster membership does have good speakers, everyone starts at the same place. Even the most experienced speakers are nervous. Toastmasters won't be able to eliminate that. What we can do, however, is help you discover a way to use that nervousness to your advantage. Many of the senior members continue to attend and give presentations because even though they have improved their speaking skills, there is always something new to learn from each other. Myth 5: You have to attend every meeting. Reality 5: You can attend as many meetings as you want. There is no minimum requirement. As a courtesy to the other members and to get the best out of toastmasters, you should participate in meetings regularly either as a speaker or in one of the other roles , but you choose how often you can attend. Just being there as an audience for the other speakers is vital! Myth 6: Each speech is criticized. Reality 6: The keyword in toastmasters is "evaluation" & “objective feedback” and we concentrate on helping each person understand what they are doing RIGHT and suggest alternatives for future presentations. This is not to make you change but to help you build your speaking toolkit. The more tools you are experienced with the more options you have in various communication situations. Myth 7: Toastmasters is very time consuming. Reality 7: The amount of time you give to Toastmasters depends on you and your needs. Giving 16 presentations does require preparation, but you can use topics associated with work or home so content preparation is minimal. You can also space your presentations to meet your schedule. Other program functions such as evaluator, Table Topic Master, Word master and timer require little or no preparation. Each meeting is a learning opportunity. You attend as many meetings as you can. There are no "musts." Myth 8: I want to, but I don't have the time. Reality 8: If you want to and need to, you can find the time. It's just 2 evenings a month. Think about it ! who is not busy ? In fact, the busiest people in the club are the most productive and proactive ones. Devote 2 Sundays per month between 7.15 to 9.30pm. Time invested in your personal development can never be time wasted. You are all you’ve Got, love yourself and devote as much time as possible to self development. Toastmasters shows you the way ! Rajiv has been a good friend for many years now and we think alike. A couple of days later he came to Dubai and we met. As usual we exchanged how life has been treating us. Then came the moment where I asked him a question that I was asking myself over and over again, with no apparent satisfying answer. “I have so many choices in my life at this moment I do not know which path to choose, what should I do?” For those of you who do not know, I have retired from the Police and I have the blessing of choosing between working, living or relaxing. After I heard Rajiv’s answer which was an hour long question and answer session followed by a speech 9, (persuasive speech) as a summary, I realized that what he was telling me is that working, living and relaxing are the same if and only if your mind is at workout status all the time. He said “Whatever you do, do not let your mind sit idle, because if that happens, you will need a long recovery period, sometimes long enough to put the mind out. It is all in the mind. If you reflect on your own life it will become apparent that at points of failure and desperation the mind is forced to become idle, therefore, getting out of that state becomes very difficult. I now realize that if I do what I like, then my mind is at constant workout, as I would always be thinking of ways to enhance the experience. If I am relaxing and I like it, then my mind is at constant workout and I would look at enhancing the state that I am in through my mind. So the question is, “what is it that would combine working, living and relaxing for You?” 19 Mentoring By DTM Usha Udayshankar Who is a Mentor and why do we need one ? A mentor serves as a role model, coach and confidante, offering knowledge, insight, perspective, or wisdom useful to the mentee. From the time we are born, we have mentors at every stage. As a child our parents are our mentors, in school they are our teachers and when we step out into the world – at work we have our seniors and friends who guide us from time to time. In Toastmasters too, every member has the privilege of choosing a senior toastmaster as their mentor. After joining this program, for the past 8 ½ years I have had one of the best mentors DTM Uma Radhakrishnan and for that matter…I have even had the opportunity to listen to many seniors, absorbed the positives ranging from their speaking style in terms of their vocabulary, diction and experience they have gained over the years. Why is it important to have a mentor in Toastmasters? Many new toastmasters have often asked this question to their seniors in the club; according to me, whenever we start something, it is very imperative to have a guide, a pillar or someone who can assist us to take our baby steps. The guidance and support that one can get from a mentor gives you the courage and confidence to shed your inhibitions with regard to stage fear and also sharpen our inherent skills. Well….if you have not yet got yourself a mentor… what are you waiting for? Laughter the best medicine –some more Jokes by Master Vishu Joke-1 Q: A single handed foolish man is hanging from a tree. Months passed and one day the head falconer informed the king that though one of the falcons was flying majestically, soaring high in the sky, the other bird had not moved from its branch since the day it had arrived. The king summoned healers and sorcerers from all the land to tend to the falcon, but no one could make the bird fly. He presented the task to the members of his court, but the next day, the king saw through the palace window that the bird had still not moved from its perch. Having tried everything else, the king thought to himself, "May be I need someone more familiar with the countryside to understand the nature of this problem." So he cried out to his court, "Go and get a farmer."In the morning, the king was thrilled to see the falcon soaring high above the palace gardens. He said to his court, "Bring me the doer of this miracle."The court quickly located the farmer, who came and stood before the king. The king asked him, "How did you make the falcon fly?"With his head bowed, the farmer said to the king, " It was very easy, your highness. I simply cut the branch where the bird was sitting. "We are all made to fly -- to realize our incredible potential as human beings. But instead of doing that, we sit on our branches, clinging to the things that are familiar to us. The possibilities are endless, but for most of us, they remain undiscovered. We conform to the familiar, the comfortable, the mundane. So for the most part, Message from VP Education’s desk 2012-2013 The day I attended my first meeting at Kanoo Toastmasters as a guest, I returned home with only one question in mind. Why do people who have completed schooling, college, graduation and masters attend these meetings? Why did executives and managers from Sales, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing, just to name a few fields, attend the meeting? It took a few meetings for me to get the answer. It is simply because members and guests learn something new in every Toastmasters meeting. Education takes place when there is learning and learning is a continuous process in one’s life. I decided to become a member as I value learning and realise it is an important objective in my life. There are many roles cresharpen the communication meeting. The opportunity namism and enthusiasm of 40 great club and a family quickly. ated by Toastmasters International to and leadership skills of members in every that presents itself , together with the dyplus members, makes Kanoo Toastmasters a where any new member would settle down Kanoo Toastmasters is as good as its members. That explains the challenges on my desk. My goal as a VP Education is to assist every member of Kanoo Toastmasters to fulfil their goals in their Toastmasters journey. I enjoy this journey... I am sure you do! You watch the newsreader and all you can notice are the “ah”s umhs and lack of vocal variety. You are not contactable between 7.30pm to 9.30 pm each day & on Fridays too because you are busy attending toastmasters meetings and your mobile is on silent mode. You plan your holidays around your TM meeting dates because you don’t want to miss any. You think you are going to be free on Friday and then you get that invitation you cannot say ‘no’ to. You have no inhibitions about copying ideas, catch phrases, themes even entire speeches. You have heard at least one international speaker of repute without having to shell out a dime. You are willing to give up the cricket one day international, liverpool vs: Chelsea or Wimbledon all because you have a role at toastmasters. Where was the first meeting of such compatible souls? Was it ..love at first site? Flavia : We met whilst pursuing our post-graduate studies in English Literature at the University of Bombay , following an introduction through a mutual friend , in Feb. 1972 .. No, it was not love at first sight , but it was certainly a relationship that grew over the years culminating in marriage in November 1979 , in Mumbai , that too long distance , he in Mumbai-Muscat and me in London ...You could say we developed our writing skills still further during those 7 years ..! Hubert: In fact the exact spot was the area outside our lecture halls , between lectures , when Susan George introduced us ...I had heard about her through my sisters , and was curious ...Also , we got closer whilst working on the send off event for the Senior batch .. Q2 : What was the one most pulling/attractive thing about your would be? Flavia : He always made me laugh ...still does..! Hubert: Her sincerity and simplicity ...... Q3 : Was there any problem/issue in finally tying the knot? Any Bollywood type family drama? (I am excited to know) Flavia : Not really , but a distinct opposition from my parents to my decision to leave London after marriage and follow him to Muscat where he was stationed . Hubert: No , but I had to wait 7 years to get married , due to family commitments.. Q4 : If you would like to change one thing in your spouse, what would that be? Flavia : Sudden impulsiveness and lack of patience at times . Hubert: Sometimes lack of punctuality .. Q5 : What is the secret of such an excellent chemistry between both of you? Flavia : Accepting him as he is .... Hubert: Accepting her as she is .......... Q6 : Do you think there have been some major compromises from either side on this fruitful journey? Flavia : No major compromises , but a relationship is always about adjustments ---give and take Hubert: No… Q7 : You are together almost 24/7. Please tell me how do you maintain that ‘pull’ for each other so consistently? Flavia : We enjoy similar interests which are usually media related , as do our children , so that makes life even more enjoyable.. Hubert: We are fortunate that we work in the same profession , as well as spend our community service time in the Parish together . 26 Q8: Talking about conflicts, I am sure they are part and parcel of your life like any body else’s. Please tell me how do you resolve them? Who breaks the ice? Does it follow with flowers, chocolates? Flavia : Nothing of the sort -conflicts do not need flowers and chocolates ...( one depletes the environment and the other sits on your waistline...!! ) Its usually a period of silence ---sometimes a very long one...each with our own thoughts and feelings --followed later by a perfectly normal conversation about something quite mundane ... Again , it is always humour that breaks the ice ---usually HM's.. Hubert: Same as above… Q9: I am sure Toastmasters club has played an important role in your lives. Please tell me in brief how it has brought changes in your personal and professional lives? How long has been this journey so far? Flavia : Whilst my TM journey has been less than 2 years old , it has helped me to enhance my existing skills ..Speaking before an audience has come easily to me since childhood , since I've had the gift of the gab ...so has taking on leadership skills , as I held various positions in my college days , from College Council Secretary to Head Girl , representing Goa at the Republic Day Parade in the N.C.C , and then later as School teacher and Radio Announcer .. However , TMI has helped me to harness all these capabilities and energies , into what it should be when communicating effectively as a speaker and Leader . I've learned to use time effectively and thereby improved my writing and speaking skills ..So whether its communicating in my professional life or otherwise , the lessons learnt in TMI have been very effective . Hubert: Yes it has played a very important role in my life . I have learned to discipline my day to day personal and professional life based on each of the Projects from the basic CC Manual . My main focus being on P3 --Come to the Point---. Professionally , I am much more organised and relaxed . Project 5 --Your Body Speaks --has helped me to express myself better , and more importantly , to listen and observe the body language of others . Q10 : What will be your advise to the new TM members? How can they keep their motivation level high in order to reach DTM stage? Flavia : As I see it , TMI , is about achieving various levels of communication and leadership skills from the very basic to the advanced ...It is about improving this at every level . Whilst body language , vocal variety , structure , expression and so on are important , it is the fundamentals that are vital ...These are attempting to speak and write correctly , using accepted standards whether written , vocal or visual ..Else , it results in doing the same thing incorrectly throughout your TM's journey , having achieved and collected mere Titles .. TMI offers us excellent guidelines both in the manuals at hand as well as other sources ...Lets use them all effectively . Hubert: My advice to new TMs is first of all to know why they have joined TMI .. to find out the real purpose in joining . If its not to improve your leadership and communication skills -----think again..! If it is for the right reasons , then be loyal to your club , and focus on the TM Mission --''Be a thought Leader and support fellow Toastmasters ''. Be proud to be a Toastmaster and let it show . 27 Dubai Shopping Festival by Miss. Pari Gupta Continued from Page 12…………………………. Many of you reading this must have already planned your vacations – going to your home countries to meet your families or out of Dubai to some tourist destination…But all of you who have decided to stay here no need to worry because we all can have a heavenly experience here in Dubai in the form of DUBAI SUMMER SURPRISES. Dubai Summer Surprises is the summer counterpart of the Dubai Shopping Festival. For ten weeks, special events are held in many of the shopping malls with themes changing weekly. It has a family emphasis, focusing on both fun and education. It was launched in 1998 to position Dubai as a summer destination and attract tourists from nearby countries such as Oman and Kuwait. This annual event has helped change the concept of summer in Dubai, and put the emirate on the map as an international summer holiday destination. More than 100 shows and activities like ice-sculpture and icecream sundae decoration competitions have b e e n planned for the 31 days of fun. This festival is one of the highlights of the city’s summer calendar with GCC residents and other tourists flocking to the city looking for bargains in the over 6,000 stores participating in this annual event. There are loads of promotions. Every buyer is a winner. It is such fun to see how these malls are filled with happy people all over and becoming shopaholics. I know soon I will be one of them rushing to the Emirates Mall to shop in my favourite outlets Virgin Megastore, Splash and Forever 21. DSS is not only about shopping. Modesh Fun_City is an edutainment area for kids, open throughout the duration of the festival. Modhesh means ‘amazing’ in Arabic which is the smiling yellow character that features the festival mascot. This huge entertainment space is divided into different themed zones. Toddlers, kids, and teenagers will all find plenty to do and discover here - from playgrounds and soft toy areas to the latest video games and a 4D cinema. Modhesh World is a child's dream come true. Summer is filled with surprises and lots of fun. Every year DSS is celebrated in a new and unique way and this year it is going to be double the fun and double the surprises. I am sure that everyone is going to have a pleasant vacation and enjoys themselves to the fullest. 28 Paradox of life ered his voice and asked me. I had planned many things, the list seemed endless. Long overdue ones, on the top of the list was my favourite …(Pause) shopping, tailoring and on the home front house cleaning !. I woke up the first day... all set to cook a sumptuous breakfast..Suddenly from behind me, I heard a familiar voice ”Mamaa, Mamaa” it was my little prince… I wasn't very pleased as I thought this morning time is ME time.. time just for me ..I had planned to make a pineapple cake and eggplant Biryani. It sounded offbeat.. so what.. why not give it a try !! I had eggplants on my table all ready to be cut .. that’s when sprang the first question… or should I say ..the first bomb…’what is this he asked me?.. (A startled look) Eggplant I replied.. wasn't it obvious.. Little boys as we know are real pranks…2nd bomb came my way “where is the egg in the eggplant… even before I could think of something worthwhile to answer, sprang another question. Oh Mamaa, tell me “Where is the pine or the apple in the pineapple” Oh .. what’s happening I thought.. For a moment I felt as if I was standing right in front of a firing squad, the next question confused me further. Completely bemused, he asked “Mamaa tell me , why are french fries called so.. were they invented in France?” .. I was now so embarrassed. I needed my search engines on…I was lost.. how do I explain the paradoxes of this language. Suddenly he began sneezing incessantly… with all my motherly affection I went to cuddle and pacify him… there was me.. poor victim battered by questions. For which I had just no answers.. Mama, now you will say,, Nigel.. you had the ice cream last night and now your nose is running… sometimes you say don't wear a dirty pair of socks as your feet will smell… noses run and feet smell..Mama I am totally confused now.. writer… And why is it that writers write, but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce, and hammers don't ham? And tiptoed into the kitchen… she was patiently listening to the conversation and then she started.. Mama, if Nigel is done. I have some more.. I wanted to run to my office.. did I invite all this on myself..I turned back and saw a smirk and then a grin…That was my beloved husband..If both your kids are done.. I have some questions too. This definitely had to be the icing on my burnt cake. When the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it. Language is like the air we breathe. It's invisible, inescapable, indispensable, and we take it for granted. But, when we take the time to step back and listen to the sounds that escape from the holes in people's faces and to ex- plore the paradoxes and vagaries Was I being bamboozled …..it had to be.. every day I tell my son… use correct words.. pronounce them clearly.. and this was the price I was paying.. a hefty price… I was waiting for this little boy to go play with his toys.. cars. Looking back through the window of time I cannot help but count the numerous opportunities I missed in life – be it while studying or during my career that spanned over two decades – just because I feared public speaking. I could not sell myself, I could not express my ideas, I could not put a point forward…in short I missed out on a lot. I would not have discovered my true self had I not joined Toastmasters! We were at a friend’s place one evening when I was introduced to V.P Menon who, I later learnt, was one of the most respected members in the toastmastering community! Over dinner he suggested that I join Toastmasters, which excited me initially. The ex- citement turned into a feeling of nervousness and self-doubt soon after I attended one of the meetings as a guest… Thus my journey began: from one club to another looking for the “right” club to make a humble beginning, to be able to utter a few words in front of an audience without collapsing. A few months and a dozen visits down the road , I realized there is no place better than home. And HOME to me, to kick off the shackles that held me, was none other than the KANOO CLUB. Finally in August of 2008, with the sun and humidity strong enough to melt away all my inhibitions, I mustered up enough courage to join the Kanoo Toastmasters club. And the last four years have been the best years of my life because KANOO provided me with the platform to discover myself. The hidden talent, the hidden energy and the hidden enthusiasm all came pouring out and the realization that I KAN(OO) DO hit me also in the vast Toastmastering community. I have been a part of the Excom for the entire period that I have been with Kanoo Toastmasters. In my first year, probably soon after my “icebreaker”, I was tasked with helping the then V.P Public Relations. Was it because I delivered a powerful icebreaker? Surely Not! Back then the demand to fill Excom roles was more than the supply and every new member was kind of “told” to be a part of the EXCOM. It was almost like we had no choice. In hindsight it worked very well for me because all my life where I had a choice I had said NO! During this time I made great progress with my CC/ CL path, but my work with the VPPR mainly involved cat and mouse chases, with me trying to arrange a handover… with little progress!!! Then the time for elections came and I was the unanimous choice for the role of VP-Membership. It was a challenge for me, especially at a time, when the economy had slumped and the only table topics discussed were recession, attrition, job insecurity, investment losses, bank loans etc. But this was a role that gave me immense satisfaction since despite the problems; we not only managed to retain most of our members but also added 19 new members in that year. It was an immensely satisfying year for the club and to me as well as I started “believing” in myself. In my third year at Toastmasters I took up the role of VP-Education. By now the rusted skills were slowly but surely getting greased and I had a challenging, yet an awesome learning experience, especially walking hand in hand with one of the most vibrant personalities …the then President Juliana Rego. “The leader is only as good as the team” and we had a great team that was full of energy and new ideas. With excellent team effort it turned out to be one of the most successful and fulfilling years for Kanoo Toastmasters club where we earned 10/10 DCP points for the first time since the inception of the club in 2004. As the President of the club last year, I can confidently say that this role catapulted me to a new level altogether. It gave me ample opportunities to practice my impromptu speaking skills, manage a diverse and dynamic team, and lead the club through yet another extremely successful year. like a Tsunami!
