For after swim practice the best thing you should have is low fat chocolate milk. Chocolate milk is an important source of protein. It also contains natural sugars that feeds amino acid into your muscles. You also could have meat or fish because they provide a lot of protein to your body. Those are only a couple after practice foods. The most important pre-meet, or meet day food is carbohydrates. You should eat carbohydrates like crackers, pasta, and breads. Carbohydrates are your muscles fuel. You also can have proteins such as nuts, cheeses, yogurt, and hard boiled eggs. Proteins keep your blood sugar stable. You should not eat candy and sweets before or during a meet. These are a couple examples of healthy foods to eat after practice and pre-meet and meet day. For more information go to usaswimming.org. Swimming strengthens the heart and lungs. Swimming works all of the major muscles. An hour of hard swimming can help you burn up to 650 calories. Benjamin Franklin invented flippers. Backstroke was officially a stroke in 1904. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, the US women’s 400 medley relay won the 1,000 gold medal for the US. An Olympic sized pool can hold up to 850,000 gallons of water. Michael Phelps has won 28 medals . Swimming can be used for types of therapy. Coach’s Corner Gabby Schwartz Meet Coach Caleb Studt! He grew up in Stow, Ohio. Coach Caleb’s swimming career began when he was a small child. He took swim lessons, but then stopped swimming for a very long time. Whenever he was a sophomore, one of Coach Caleb’s friends wanted to join the swim team. He was afraid to do it alone, so Coach Caleb joined him. He swam until his senior year. That was he joined the Eels. Coach Caleb’s favorite strokes are breaststroke and backstroke. They are also his fastest strokes and his favorite strokes to teach. Coach Caleb’s favorite thing about coaching is seeing the kids improve and achieve their goals. There is nothing he dislikes about coaching. If Coach Caleb was stranded on a desert island, and could only choose three things to have with him, he would choose a tarp, a pocket knife, and a water bottle. He says he could fill the water bottle with water, use the tarp to build a shelter, and a pocket knife to hunt for food. Lastly, when I asked him how his best friend would describe him, he said loyal, hardworking, and dedicated. Thank you for reading this month’s Coach’s Corner column!
