LORD OF THE FLIES Casting Breakdown and Advance Audition Information Thank you for your interest in our production of Lord of the Flies, which will take place at The Courtyard Centre for the Arts, Hereford, in October 2016. This page provides some general information about the auditions and about The Courtyard. The Play Set during the aftermath of a terrible plane crash, a group of school children find themselves deserted on an island with no adults in sight. Relationships are formed and arguments begin on how they will all survive and live together in harmony. This modern masterpiece deals with issues such as bullying, survival and the true nature of how we behave out of all our comfort zones. The novel by William Golding has been adapted for the stage by Nigel Williams. The Cast This will be a pro-am production featuring three professional actors and members of The Courtyard’s thriving Youth Theatre who will work alongside a team of creative professionals to deliver a high-quality production in The Courtyard’s Main House. We are seeking three professional actors for the roles of Jack, Ralph and the Naval Officer who will perform in all fifteen shows in the run. (The Youth Theatre members will be split into two casts and will perform in alternate shows.). The casting breakdown for the three professional roles is overleaf. It is a 16-year-old building near the centre of Hereford and comprises a 400-seat main house, 120-seat studio, café bar and restaurant, a gallery, workshops, rehearsal spaces and meeting rooms. The Courtyard has an excellent reputation for in-house productions, which in the past have ranged from full-scale musicals to Shakespeare, comedy and original pantomimes and national tours. Hereford The cathedral city of Hereford is approximately 3 hours from London and is equidistant (approx 50 miles) from Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff. Herefordshire has lots of pretty market towns (Ledbury and Ross-onWye, to name but two), picturesque black-and-white villages and some stunning countryside. RALPH Playing age: Height: Physical appearance: Accent: Attributes: Skills: 15-18 5’6’’ – 5’8’’ boyish, slim and athletic RP with a happy tone a good looking and understanding young teenager who is a product of everything that is good from English schooling. Ralph represents all the hope and optimism in the play and is the main protagonist. He is a natural leader, but kind hearted and sees the best in people, but his enthusiasm does get the better of him. the performer will need experience of working with young people of all ages and abilities, have a very strong physical ability and awareness of movement. They will also need a strong level of stage combat JACK Playing age: Height: Physical appearance: Accent: Attributes: Skills: 15-18 5’6’’ – 5’8’’ boyish athletic and strong Heightened RP good looking in a slightly arrogant way, aggressive, strong, proud and easily angered, Jack represents all the chaos and uncivilised behaviour of the story. He is the antagonist to the play and is a instinctive leader who believes in survival of the strongest. the performer will need experience of working with young people of all ages and abilities, have a very strong physical ability and awareness of movement. They will also need a strong level of stage combat NAVAL OFFICER Playing Age: Height: Physical appearance: Accent: Attributes: Skills: 25 – 40 5’10” – 6’2” strong build, needs to be commanding and look like he can handle himself when attacked commanding, direct, RP almost baritone quality in control, commanding, tough, a soldier through and through, an Officer and potentially an Older Ralph. Simply think young Bond and you have it! The character will be far more Officer in action than simply in parade uniform. the performer will need experience of working with young people of all ages and abilities, have a very strong physical ability and awareness of movement.
