November 9, 1803 The National Gazette In results of the country’s recent land purchase, Lewis and Clark go on daring journey Diary Entry from Mr. Lewis: “W e trudged through the high grass, and the big beautiful wide trunk trees that I have never seen before, hovering over our heads. I breathe in the clean, crisp, fresh air of this unexplored land. My best friend William Clark was trailing behind me. He came up to where I was, and rested on a fallen tree trunk. He caught his breath and asked me if we could sleep in the little clearing for the night. I agreed and we started to set up camp. The camp was near a big rushing rapids river. Just then, a breed of fish that I’ve never seen before leapt out over the falls! Seaman, my Newfoundland dog, was barking wildly at them. This was spooking our horses, but luckily before they could break loose, York took control of them. Later, Sacagawea said that the fish were called salmon, and that meant we were getting much closer to the Pacific Ocean. I was delighted to hear this. President Thomas Jefferson will also be happy to hear this. After he bought the land from the French, in the Louisiana Purchase, he sent us on this journey in the first place. This really is the adventure of a new time!” - Meriwether Lewis 1804 Mr. Meriwether Lewis (left), and Mr. William Clark. (right) By Ace Reporter, Nicolette Balch T he Louisiana Purchase was bought by Thomas Jefferson in 1803, a year later he sent Lewis and Clark to explore the land he had bought for our new country. T he Louisiana Purchase is the major cause of the Lewi The Louisiana Purchase is the acquisition by the United States more than 530,000,000 acres of territory from France in 1803, at the cost of about 3 cents per acre. The total ended up to be $15 million. T he French territory of Louisiana included far more land than just the current U.S. state of Louisiana. The lands purchased contained parts or all of present-day Arkansas, Mis souri, Iowa, Minnesota west of the Mississippi River, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, northern Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, the portions of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado east of the Rocky Mountains, the portions of southern Manitoba, southern Saskatchewan and southern Alberta that drain into the Missouri River, and Louisiana on both sides of the Mississippi River including the city of New Orleans. The land includes in the purchase is 22.3% of the territory of the future United States. This purchase, is very important moment in the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. T he election of Thomas Jefferson, because without Jefferson becoming president, the part of the country bought in the L.P. would still probably be owned by the French, that part would still be speaking French, and also without Jefferson, the Lewis and Clark exploration wouldn’t happen in the future. A n event I predict that will happen because of the L.P. and Lewis&Clark is the “Trail of Tears”, because the future state of Oklahoma was bought in the L.P. and Lewis&Clark explored its territory. Oklahoma was where most of the Indians are going to be sent to. If any Indians living on the East Coast right now, might want to leave to Oklahoma now while you have the chance. “The Trail” is not pretty, believe me! almost sixteen states for our country. L ewis&Clark: This event is newsworthy because, Only a handful of people are daring to go on a several-year-long journey, across land no one, has ever witnessed. It’s very intriguing to now about. This event will change history because everything that ever happens on the west coast and a lot of Middle America won’t happen. This change is very positive in my opinion, because we get a lot of new land and we can start settling in new places, also we can find out what kind of new things are out there. Everyone should now about this event. Why, because you could start a new life, and settle somewhere else and even somewhere more beautiful then the place you are living in now. A nother event is the Attack on the Alamo and Mexican and American War. This is so because some of Texas was bought in the L.P. therefore, if Jefferson hadn’t bought the land, and L&C didn’t explore it, we still might have not even started settling in Northern Texas, and other parts of Texas. Therefore, both of these wars might happen. The wars will be caused by Mexico not wanting us to settle on their land. L ouisiana Purchase: This event is newsworthy because, The Louisiana Purchase bought a HUGE portion of new land for our country. In counting Thomas Jefferson and the treaty signing of the Louisiana Purchase. www.natinalgeographic.com/lewisand clark www.lewisandclark.org www.gatewayno.com/history/LaPurchase www.en.wikipedia.orgwiki/Louisiana_ Purchase lsm.crt.state.la.us/cabildo/cab4. htm Many thanks to these sites for this newspaper’s information! Cartoon shows a mock way of President Jefferson buying the land from the Louisiana Purchas, from the French. It shows him as if he was buying it at a store. The National Gazette
