The Presidency of James Monroe • Era of Good Feelings 1816-1823 – Decline of Federalists = Single Party dominated politics • The American System – Supported by Madison, implemented by Monroe – Make US less economically dependent on Europe – Produce “import” good in US – Formation of a 2nd National Bank for loans – Protective Tariff of 22% The Missouri Compromise 1821 • Large Westward Migration = New States formed • 11 free states & 11 slave states in 1819 = Balance of Power • South = More farm land • North = Stop the spread of slavery • Compromise (Henry Clay introduced) – Maine becomes a Free State – Missouri becomes a Slave State – Dividing line = 36*30* north latitude – A temporary solution to the question of slavery The Monroe Doctrine • Introduced by President James Monroe (1823) • 6 • Napoleonic Wars = Latin American countries declare independence • US wanted to keep Europeans from reclaiming lost territory • Nationalism = Extreme pride/ loyalty to your country • Monroe Doctrine = Western Hemisphere off limits to European control – “these states henceforth are not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers” US Policy Towards Native Americans • 1824 Monroe proposes that all Native Americans should be moved west of the Mississippi River • Cherokee Nation v. Georgia 1831 – N.A. = no standing in court b/c neither state or country – N.A had a right to lands they possessed • Andrew Jackson becomes president 1829 – Signs Removal Act of 1830 – Trail of Tears (1838) 1/3 of Cherokee population dies on journey Growth of the Factory • Putting-out System – Borrowed from England – Merchants bought raw materials – Recruit Farm familes to do the work • Lowell System – Poor wages, working conditions, stayed in dorms – Employee Turnover = low wages – Low wages = Middle class of merchants & bankers • Growth of Factories – Based along rivers = power – Textile Factories weave cotton from the South = Need for workers (women)
