This tour will explore Scandinavia (Denmark, Sweden and Norway) in a unique and different way. Together with your native Scandinavian tour leader, you will discover the intimate aspects of Scandinavia as well as enjoying the many scenic and tourist attractions that these countries have to offer. First, will be an exploration of Denmark; the beautiful central city of Copenhagen, exploring places such as Nyhaven a 17th century waterfront, canal and entertainment district. We will also see the mythical castle of Hamlet, Kroneborg, and explore the rich history of the VikiŶŐƐĂƚƚŚĞ͞sŝŬŝŶŐĞƐŬŝďƐŵƵƐeĞƚ͟ŝn Roskilde. Later travelling through Sweden you will have the opportunity to stay at The Hunters Pavilion at 'Hackerberga' Castle, experience typical castle activities as well as the surrounding natural environment. We will visit Swedish Manors and explore its majestic natural world. The journey will take us north through Sweden, visiting the famous glass making area of Orrefors, where you will have the opportunity to see local artisans at work. Our journey then takes us on an exploration of the island Gotland. This Island holds the bes t preserved medieval sites in Scandinavia. The island was also the home of the famous Swedish director Ingmar Bergman and we will get the opportunity to visit his home and areas where some of the films were set. The journey will continue north to the capital of Sweden, Stockholm, where we will visit historical sites, museums and explore the heart of the city, such as the Sweden͛s National Cathedral, The Royal Palace and City Hall known for the annual Nobel Prize banquet. We will also visit ͟sĂƐĂ DƵƐĞƵŵ͟ ǁŚŝĐŚhouses a Swedish war ship built 1626-‐1628. From Stockholm there will be day tours to Uppsala and Bjorko. Bjorko is an island outside Stockholm where we will stay i n the town of Birka, a n i mportant a rchaeological s ite, as it was the main trading centre during the Viking age. At this stage of the journey there will be a choice of returning to Australia or to continue onwards to the north of Sweden. For the group continuing on the adventure, we will visit Sweden͛ƐŶŽƌƚŚ, its stunning and impressive mountains and beautiful unique nature. (Meals in flight) SUN 23 AUG COPENHAGEN Today ǁĞǀŝƐŝƚƚŚĞ͞sŝŬŝŶŐĞƐŬŝďƐŵƵƐĞĞƚ͟ŝn Roskilde (The Viking-‐ ship museum). An amazing opportunity to see a viking ship which i s more than 1000 yeaƌƐŽůĚ͘͞dŚĞDƵƐĞƵŵ/ƐůĂŶĚ͟ŝƐ part of the museum where they make life-‐size reconstructions of viking ships. Your tour includes an opportunity to get onboard and sail one of the ships onto the Danish fjord. In the late afternoon we will return to Copenhagen and discover ͞ELJŚĂǀĞŶ͕͟ ǁŚŝch is a 17th century waterfront, canal and entertainment district in Copenhagen. The area is lined by townhouses, bars and restaurants. (B) This Bridge runs nearly 5 miles from Copenhagen to Malmo and is i mportant for joining the two countries together. The bridge is the longest combined twin-‐track railway and road in Europe. Arriving in Malmo we have time to explore Western Harbour, which i s the new vision a fter c losing down the Kokums shipyard, once the heart of working class Malmo. The area is a new development and has been given a structural facelift allowing for creativity and new ideas in architecture. In the afternoon we will continue to the beautiful Hackeberga Castle, where we will check in. In the evening we will enj oy a group dinner at the castle. (B,D) There will be opportunities to see how the melted glass turns into beautiful a rt work and design, a nd learn a bout the world famous glass design a nd i ts heritage. (B) SUN 30 AUG VAXSJO ʹ OSKARSHAMN -‐ VISBY This morning is devoted to travel to Gotland; firstly by coach from Vaxsjo to Oskarshamn, then travel by ferry to Visby. We will arrive at our hotel in the afternoon. In the evening we will go out for dinner at a local restaurant. (B,D) MON 31 AUG VISBY After breakfast at the hotel we will explore Visby, the best preserved medieval city in Scandinavia. We will visit the historical remains of the long stone wall surrounding the city dated to around AD 1300. (B) FRI 04 SEPT STOCKHOLM Enjoy a full day tour of Stockholm, starting with a visit to the old town of Stockholm (Gamla Stan) founded in 1252. Our tour will guide us through the streets stopping at spots such as Sweden's National cathedral and the Royal Palace. In the afternoon we drive out of the city centre to visit Drottningholm, the private residence of the royal family since 1981. The south parts of the palace is the royal residence, but the park and surrounding buildings is open to the public. The building is the most well-‐ preserved royal castle built in the 1600 in Sweden and its other buildings such as the Chinese Pavillion, Palace Theatre and the magnificent palace garden makes Drottningholm a unique experience. (B) SAT 05 SEPT STOCKHOLM ʹ BJÖRKÖ -‐ STOCKHOLM This morning we will travel to the Island Björkö, where we will make a visit to Birka, which was once an important trading centre during the viking a ge. Birka i s an Archeological site, with parts reconstructed as an open air museum. (B) SUN 06 SEPT STOCKHOLM dŚŝƐŵŽƌŶŝŶŐǁĞǁŝůůǀŝƐŝƚƚŚĞŝƐůĂŶĚũƵƌŐĂƌĚĞŶĂŶĚƚŚĞ͞sĂƐĂ DƵƐĞƵŵ͟. Vasa was a Swedish war s hip built in 1626-‐1628. The ship sank after sailing less then 2km. In 1961 it was recovered and now forms part of the Vasa Museum. MON 24 AUG COPENHAGEN This morning we travel to Helsingor also known as Elsinore by Shakespeare's spelling. Then we wŝůůǀŝƐŝƚ͞<ƌŽŶŽďŽƌŐ^ůŽƚƚ͕͟Ă Renaissance castle world renowned through ^ŚĂŬĞƐƉĞĂƌĞ͛Ɛ Hamlet. Kronborg castle is one of Denmark͛s most famous ĐƵůƚƵƌĂůĂƚƚƌĂĐƚŝŽŶƐĂŶĚŝƐŽŶhE^K͛ƐŚĞƌŝƚĂŐĞůŝƐƚ͘ Next we travel to Fredensborg and stop at Fredensborg Castle, ƚŚĞ ƌŽLJĂůĨĂŵŝůLJ͛ƐƌĞƐŝĚĞŶĐĞĚƵƌŝŶŐƵƚƵŵŶĂŶĚ^ƉƌŝŶŐ͘ĨƚĞƌĂ quick photo stop, continue to Hillerod a nd enjoy a n outside visit of Frederiksborg Castle. (B,L) TUE 25 AUG COPENHAGEN ʹ MALMO -‐ HACKEBERGA This morning we will travel over the Öresund Bridge to Malmo, Sweden. WED 26 AUG HACKEBERGA Today is devoted to enjoying the Swedish country and castle living. In the morning we will go for a bushwalk in Häckeberga nature reserve guided by a professional Swedish hunter, which will allow us to get close up to wild animals such as elk, deer, and wild pigs. There will a lso be opportunities for wild blueberry picking and fishing in the nearby lake. In the afternoon there will be time indulge in the activities the castle has to offer, such as a swim in the lake, relaxing in the park or enjoying the art gallery. Dinner will be served at the Castle followed by a Swedish Whisky tasting. (B,D) THU 27 AUG HACKEBERGA This morning we start the day with a visit to Ales Stenar, which is a megalithic monument consisting of a stone ship 67 meters long formed by 59 l arge sandstone boulders. The ship is around 1400 years and dates back to the Swedish Iron Age. In the afternoon we will explore the best kept medieval manor in Scandinavia, Glimming Hus. It was built between 1499 a nd 1506 when Skane belonged to Denmark, today Glimminge Hus is a living monument. In the evening we return and enjoy dinner and our last night at Häckeberga Castle. (B,L,D) FRI 28 AUG HACKEBERGA -‐ VAXSJO This morning we will c oach to Smaland district, visiting Sweden's Mecca for glass art and design. TUE 01 SEPT VISBY ʹ FARO -‐ VISBY Today we take a full day excursion to explore the Island of Faro, which is not only famous for its natural beauty, but is also the past home of the famous Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. We will visit s everal l ocations from the films Persona, Through a Glass Darkly and Scene from a Marriage. (B) WED 02 SEPT VISBY This morning we will explore the south-‐eastern part of Gotland. Our first s top i s Trullhalsar, which is a graveyard dating back to 600-‐700 AD. Following this we will spend some time at 'ƌŽŐĂƌŶƐďĞƌŐĞƚ͕ ŽŶĞ ŽĨ 'ŽƚůĂŶĚ͛Ɛ ŵŽƐƚ beautiful nature reserves. Around lunch time we will stop at Katthamra Gard, GotůĂŶĚ͛Ɛ ŽŶůLJ DĂŶŽƌ ĨŽƌ ƐŽŵĞ ƌĞĨƌĞƐŚŵĞŶƚƐ ;ůƵŶĐŚ Ăƚ ŽǁŶ expense). In the afternoon will start to explore the rare nature of Holmhallar, where there will be opportunities to take a swim in the Baltic Sea. We will be transferred to the airport for our morning flight. On arrival to Arlanda Airport we will travel to ƚŚĞ ĐŝƚLJ ŽĨ hƉƉƐĂůĂ͘ dŚŝƐ ŝƐ ŽŶĞ ŽĨ ^ǁĞĚĞŶ͛Ɛ ŽůĚĞƐƚ ĐŝƚŝĞƐĂŶĚ ŚĞƌĞ LJŽƵ ǁŝůů ǀŝƐŝƚ ͞'ƌĂǀĞ DƵŶĚ͕͟ ^ǁĞĚĞŶ͛Ɛ ůĂƌgest and most important burial filed dating back to 6th and 12th centuries. On our way to Stockholm city centre, we will be served tea at Ofvandahls Hovkonditori . On a rrival at Oslo we will be met and transferred to the city for a 3 hour sightseeing tour of the Norwegian capital. You will enjoy highlights such as the Vigeland Park and the Viking Ship museum. The tour ends at our hotel for check-‐in. (B) SUN 13 SEPT OSLO Our tour this morning s tarts a t the Oslo Opera House, which i s the home of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, and is only a short walk from the hotel. This is the impressive work of the Norwegian architect firm Snøhetta; it was opened to the public in 2007 and was the winner of numerous architectural awards. In the afternoon we will visit another Norwegian Icon, the Munch Museum, which is the museum of the famous artist Edward Munch. At this museum you can see paintings such as The Scream and the Madonna. (B) MON 14 SEPT OSLO This morning we will visit the Nobel Peace Center, which is a showcase for the Nobel Peace Prize.
