I begin by thanking each o f yo u who were part
o f the Co nsecratio n Sunday Wo rship Service
and Celebratio n luncheo n last week. It was a
truly inspiring experience to hear Pasto r Blake
share his heart-felt understanding o f financial
stewardship, and to watch as abo ut 6 0 families
in o ur co ngregatio n presented their "Estimates
o f Giving" cards fo r 20 14 at the Altar. It is a
humbling thing to make such a public o ffering o f
yo ur precio us, hard-earned financial reso urces
to the Lo rd's wo rk thro ugh St. Martin's Lutheran
Church. Pasto r Blake embo died the biblical
reaso ns fo r giving: Go d has given us all that we
have and all that we are, and we respo nd by
returning to him a percentage o f "o ur" inco me in
thanksgiving. Go d lo ves cheerful givers,
do esn't He?
We are reminded this week that it is no t o nly o ur mo ney and things, but the gifts o f o ur very

selves that Go d expects. Go d made each o f us to be abso lutely unique, with all the to o ls and
talents needed to bless o thers. We fo cus this week o n "Vo catio n." Ano ther wo rd fo r that is
"Wo rk." No t just wo rk we're paid to do , but wo rk with which we are gifted to bless the wo rld.
The "perfect life" we all yearn fo r is fo und at the intersectio n o f o ur financial giving and the
giving o f o urselves o ut o f gratitude to Go d fo r who we are and what we have been given.

Responding to the Typhoon Tragedy in the Phillipines
We have all been ro cked by scenes o f the devastatio n in the Philippines this past week. As
always in these situatio ns, there can be a feeling o f helplessness. What can we do to help?
Ho w can we begin to make sense o ut o f disasters such as this? First o f all, kno w that the
ELCA, thro ugh Lutheran Disaster Respo nse (LDR), is sending $l millio n to the Philippines this
week. Yo ur church is wo rking thro ugh Lutheran Wo rld Relief (LWR) which already has a
presence in the Philippines. If any o f yo u wo uld like to co ntribute directly, please send
