Cinco de Mayo Day Proclamation

Manatee County, Florida
WHEREAS, Cinco de Mayo, the fifth of May, commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over France at
the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862; and
WHEREAS, in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is primarily observed in the state of Puebla and includes traditions
such as military parades, reenactments of the Battle of Puebla, and other festive events; and
WHEREAS, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo is widely interpreted as a celebration of MexicanAmerican culture and heritage, with the occasion being marked with parades, parties, music,
dancing, and traditional foods; and
WHEREAS, a Cinco de Mayo Festival will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Sutton Park in Palmetto.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by the Board of County Commissioners of Manatee County,
Florida, that May 5, 2017, shall be known, designated, and set aside as
CINCO DE MAYO DAY
in Manatee County, Florida.
ADOPTED with a quorum present and voting this 25th day of April 2017.
