Spring 2017
Power of Prayer, Inc.
Dubuque, Iowa
Dear Friend,
As we near the end of the Lenten season, one of our richest seasons in the liturgical year, and move ever
closer to the Triduum and the greatest feast of the Church year, Easter Sunday, keep the momentum of your
journey through Easter and into Pentecost. Jesus dramatically fulfilled this feast by sending His Spirit to us allow His Spirit to draw you into deeper relationship with Him. Fostering a prayer life that includes quiet and
stillness can be challenging, but it’s necessary if we are going to listen for His voice. Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament beckons us to retreat from the busyness and frenzy of the day to day and quiet our spirit so it can
connect with His.
Continue the joy of the Easter season well into Pentecost so that it becomes a life-long habit.
On occasion, I like to introduce a little change in the newsletter to highlight the beauty of our Eucharistic
faith. Are you familiar with Eucharistic Miracles? They have always intrigued me, not only do they defy scientific
explanation, they are edifying. Also, keep an eye out in the next couple of issues, I will be featuring the ‘Fatima
Corner’, where I will be highlighting upcoming events being sponsored for the 100th anniversary of the
apparitions at Fatima, Portugal.

As we are now in the 100th year of the Fatima apparitions, I feel the need to emphasize the Pilgrim Virgin
program with greater vigor. Every week the Pilgrim Virgin statue visits a different home in the Dubuque area.
The primary purpose is to aid families in responding to the requests made by Mary during her apparitions at
Fatima: to return to God; to make reparation for sins; to pray the Rosary for peace. We are in need of men for the
Honor Guard, whether it be one Saturday a month, or every Saturday…the sacrifice in lending your time will
be greatly rewarded. If you are interested, please reach out to Mark Hoeger, 563-213-0477, and let him know
how you would like to help!
Our Holy Father

On several occasions in the past year, we have been contacted to lead Rosary at the wake or funeral of a deceased
loved one. The request is humbling and the ability to offer such
an act of charitable service is rewarding and blesses those who
participate as much as it blesses the grieving family. If you are not
on email and wish to be put on a call list when the need arises,
please contact the Melissa, 564-6365. For those past Honor Guard
members, Power of Prayer adorers or their immediate family
members, we will happily consider having Our Lady of Fatima
statue present at the wake/funeral.
Fatima Corner
Great Give Day - May 11, 2017
The committee of Fatima 100 is planning prayerful events leading up
to the 100th anniversary of Fatima, which will take place October 13th,
2017. In an effort to spread the news to our community and show
our support, the Power of Prayer will keep you informed of upcoming
activities as we are made aware.
The goal of Great Give Day is to inspire the community to come together for 24 hours
to give as much as possible to support the work of local nonprofits. The minimum
donation is $10; there is no maximum. Bonus prize grants from corporate sponsors
amplify charitable donations to make each dollar go further. While last year produced
some challenges with the online giving platform, the Community Foundation
has moved to a different provider and we have confidence that the process will be
smoother this year. With the generous donations of many of our supporters, we
continue to build upon our endowment fund, helping ensure the financial future of
our Chapel. Beginning at 12 a.m. and running until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, May 11th,
the Great Give Day will kick off again; please consider making your online donation to
the Power of Prayer. May God greatly bless you for your generosity! greatgiveday.org

EUCHARISTic Miracles
Mary Mother of the Eucharist
In the 8th century, a priest in Lanciano, Italy was experiencing doubts about the real presence of Jesus
in the Eucharist. In the middle of saying Mass, he said the words of consecration (“This is my body,”
“This is my blood) and saw the bread and wine transform into real human flesh and blood. The blood
coagulated into five globules (later believed to be representative of the five wounds of Christ). Word of
the miracle quickly spread, the local archbishop launched an investigation, and the Church approved
the miracle.
The flesh is still preserved to this day. Professor of anatomy Odoardo Linoli conducted a scientific
analysis of the flesh in 1971 and concluded that the flesh was cardiac tissue, the blood appeared to be
fresh blood (as opposed to blood that was 1200 years old), and there was no trace of preservatives.
You can visit the miraculous flesh and blood in the Church of San Francesco in Lanciano, Italy.
Eucharistic Saint - St. Augustine
“It is our duty to adore the Blessed Sacrament.
No one receives the Blessed Sacrament unless
he adores it...and not only do we not sin by
adoring, we do sin by not adoring.”
“To fall in love with God is the greatest of
all romances; to seek Him, the greatest
adventure; to find Him, the greatest human
achievement.”
- St. Augustine, Feast Day May 26th
Taken From JESUS OUR EUCHARISTIC LOVE
by Fr. Stefano Manelli, OFM Conv., STD
Imprimatur, 1973
The Holy Eucharist is the Bread that comes from our Heavenly Mother.
St. Augustine wrote,
“Jesus took His Flesh from the flesh of Mary.”
We know, too, that united to the Divinity in the Eucharist there is Jesus’
Body and Blood taken from the body and blood of the Blessed Virgin.
Therefore at every Holy Communion we receive, it would be quite
correct, and a very beautiful thing, to take notice of our Holy Mother’s
sweet and mysterious presence, inseparably united with Jesus in the
Host. Jesus is always the Son She adores. He is Flesh of Her flesh and
Blood of Her blood. If Adam could call Eve when she had been taken
from his rib, “bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh” (Gen. 2:23),
cannot the holy Virgin Mary even more rightly call Jesus ‘Flesh of my
flesh and Blood of my blood”? Taken from the “intact Virgin” as says St.
Thomas Aquinas, the flesh of Jesus is the maternal flesh of Mary, the
blood of Jesus is the maternal blood of Mary. Therefore it will never be
possible to separate Jesus from Mary.
For this reason at every Holy Mass which is celebrated, the Blessed
Virgin can repeat with truth to Jesus in the Host and in the Chalice,
“You are my Son today I have generated You” (Ps. 2:7). And justly
St. Augustine teaches us that in the Eucharist “Mary extends and
perpetuates Her Divine Maternity”, while St. Albert the Great exhorts
with love, “My Soul if you wish to experience intimacy with Mary let
yourself be carried between Her arms and nourished with Her blood” .
