Jill Greenberg
Biografie
Since the age of 10, Jill Greenberg has staged photographs and created characters using the mediums of drawing,
painting, sculpture, film and photography. Nowadays, she is known worldwide for her uniquely human animal
portraits, which intentionally anthropomorphize her subjects, as well as her infamous series ‘End Times’ about
toddlers in distress.
Before that, the Canadian/American photographer managed to make a break through portraying Hollywood
personalities like David Bowie, Liza Minelli, Drew Barrymore, Clint Eastwood, Tom Cruise, and many more. These
images appeared in numerous prestigious periodicals including Time, Wired, Entertainment Weekly, and Rolling
Stone.
An early adopter of digital effects, Greenberg has developed a world that is more intense, more razor sharp than the
one in which we actually reside. Jill Greenberg creates portraits that seize our attention, that create an altered
universe staring back at us.
Her series ‘End Times’ combined beautiful, poignant imagery, impeccably executed, with both political and personal
relevance. Greenberg’s subject at that time was taboo: children in pain. She utilized this uncomfortable image as a
way to break through to the pop mainstream and participate in a growing national dialogue of the real dangers
facing the world.
In 2001, Greenberg turned her lens on celebrities of a different sort — namely monkeys and apes, many of whom

have appeared in film and television roles. These brilliant portraits were warmly received, and paved the path for
photographs of a wide range of other animals, including bears and horses.
Constructing outdoor studios in Calgary and Vancouver, Greenberg photographed grizzlies, black bears, and a polar
bear, among others. As with her celebrity and crying baby photographs and monkey portraits, the artist captured an
astonishing array of personalities, expressions, and emotions in her ursine friends. She managed to do the same in
her beautiful new show ‘Horses’. Jaski will host this show soon.
Printed on a massive scale, Greenberg’s bears and horses insistently demand our undivided attention; yet the
gorgeous prints also seduce us in a subtler (and perhaps more powerful) manner with their sensuous, painterly
textures achieved by the artist’s expert digital finishing.
Jill Greenberg was born in 1967 in Montreal and lived in Detroit and New York City. At the moment she lives in Los
Angeles.
Jaski is the representative for Jill Greenberg in Europe.
