SMLAOSW6 Reinstatement in Cold

Gas Network Team Leader– UnitSMLAOSW6 Reinstatement in Cold-lay
Bituminous Materials
This unit is designed to allow the candidate to demonstrate the skills and knowledge
required to carry out reinstatement using cold-lay bituminous surfacing material. The
candidate will be able to prepare the pavement layer to receive cold-lay surfacing
materials, to identify and select materials to be used for the reinstatement, and to
construct the cold-lay bituminous surfacing layer, using the correct equipment. They will
also be able to identify and dispose correctly and safely of surplus materials, and materials
that cannot be re-used
What does this specification look like?
Gas Network Team Leaders need to be able to:
RCLBM1
RCLBM2
RCLBM3
RCLBM4
RCLBM5
Prepare the layer of pavement structure to receive permanent cold-lay
surfacing materials
Construct a cold-lay bituminous surfacing layer
Dispose of surplus materials
Follow safe working practices
Understand relevant health and safety guidance and legislation
What do I need to take this module?
Prior to taking this module, candidates should have completed all the following units:
SMLMSW1, SMLMSW2, SMLMSW3.
Consideration should be made for the completion of SMLAOSW4 and SMLAOSW5
Candidates to be assessed as competent in this area must successfully meet the criteria
listed below or have other unitary evidence demonstrating an equivalent level of
competence.
Evidence should be gathered from the workplace on at least one occasion

Performance Criteria
To achieve this unit you will need to be able to:
Prepare the layer of pavement structure to receive permanent cold-lay surfacing
materials
P1. Remove loose and unacceptable materials from the area to be reinstated using
suitable equipment
P2. Identify and rectify any pavement layer surface contamination or defect
P3. Use suitable equipment to trim back edges where damage has occurred
P4. Use suitable equipment to re-position displaced ironwork, kerbs and edge restraints in
accordance with established levels
P5. Confirm against the specifications that the correct depth is left for the cold-lay
surface material.
Construct a cold-lay bituminous surfacing layer
P6. Check that imported bituminous material complies with the specification
P7. Select compaction equipment and ensure that it is both suitable for the operation
and in working condition and safe to use
P8. Spread and level cold-lay bituminous material in binder course and surface course
layers
P9. Handle cold-lay bituminous material correctly
P10. Store cold-lay bituminous material to prevent contamination, oxidation and wetting
P11. Reinstate around highway iron work according to the specification
P12. Seal edges of the cavity using specified edge sealant
P13. Compact the bituminous material according to the specification.
Dispose of surplus materials
P14. Identify materials that are unsuitable for re-use or surplus to requirements
P15. Store surplus materials and those unsuitable for reuse in safe temporary storage
P16. Ensure materials for disposal are loaded safely for transportation.
Follow safe working practices
P17. Identify and follow current relevant health and safety regulations, standards and
other legislation relating to working practices within the construction environment
and specific to any practical task that they are required to carry out
P18. Leave the site in a clean and safe condition
P19. Identify Materials used for reinstating a cold-lay bituminous surfacing layer including;
permanent cold-lay binder and surfacing materials, deferred set mixtures for
reinstatement and cold edge sealant
P23. Identify materials for disposal including, unsuitable surplus materials surplus
materials that are suitable for re-use
P24. Demonstrate the use of appropriate hand tools
P25. Demonstrate the use of appropriate powered equipment
P26. Demonstrate the safe use of tools and equipment
Page 2
P27. Demonstrate the correct use of appropriate PPE (including, as necessary: high
visibility jacket or waistcoat, hard hat, ear defenders, gloves, protective footwear,
waterproof clothing, eye protection visor or goggles, and respiratory protective
equipment
P28. Use risk assessment methods to identify and control hazards on site
P29. Use all necessary precautions to minimise danger or inconvenience to road users
P30. Use all necessary precautions to minimise danger or inconvenience to site personnel
P31. Use all necessary precautions to minimise damage to equipment or apparatus.
