Fundraising Pack - Leeds University Union

Fundraising
Pack
Need help with fundraising?
Fundraising can play a vital role in the success and sustainability of your society by
helping you secure funding and increasing your engagement with society members
and the university and community as a whole.
There are three main approaches to fundraising – Corporate, Individual, Trust
– this pack will explain how to make the most of all three to ensure your
fundraising ventures are a success!
Corporate fundraising
Corporate fundraising usually takes the form of businesses
sponsoring clubs and societies in order to promote their
brand.
In return for funding you could think about putting their logo on your
society’s hoodies, social media pages, or promotional material.
If companies don’t want to sponsor money see if you can secure
discounts such as free drinks, or gift donations of new materials
for your society like t-shirts or sports equipment.
Always ensure you have any contracts
checked through before
you finalise them – we can help with that to ensure you are getting
the best possible deal and how much the sponsorship! You can also use
the template corporate sponsorship template at the back of this
document. Please all check the LUU sponsorship policy before
approaching anyone www.luu.org.uk/yourideas/policy/sponsorship/
Stuck for which businesses to contact? Look out for new
business in the area that may be keen for extra promotion, research
companies who may want to tap into the student market, contact
organisations related to your society and ask your suppliers. You could
also use corporate databases to find companies operate in the local
area or have a similar audience you can access these through the
library website. We like Mint, Fame, ICC and Orbis.
Individual fundraising
This can be a great resource to tap into and includes:
1) Event Fundraising:
 Hold a fundraising pub quiz at Old Bar, or you could even host a
fundraising manicure-a-thon
 How about an Auction of Promises; ask friends to pledge gifts for you to
auction off for example; a French lesson; washing up for a week or
having a picnic made for you
 Host a film
screening and use the cinema room on campus
 As a society do a sponsored event together – hop, bike, swim? If
you’re not sporty why not try a sponsored silence, or fancy dress?
 Organise a clothes
swap shop or bring and buy sale
 Organise a dinner party and charge people a fixed amount to attend
Think big and host events in the union that are open to all. Advertise
them across campus and charge for entry or refreshments. See if you
can get a sponsor to match your fundraising £1 for £1.
2) Individual
donations
from members as a oneoff, monthly donation
or even text donation
3) Make use of Alumni
which can be set up on a Just
Giving page – we can help
you set a page up for your
society.
In return you can keep them updated

Case Study; Women’s hockey
Women’s hockey have an
innovate corporate partnership
scheme which sees sponsors receive different benefits depending
upon their gold; silver or bronze status. The Club has also negotiated
free venue hire, cheap drinks and sponsorship of certain items
such as t-shirts.
Working closely with local schools the Club managed to negotiate £200
per school for an outreach
programme which encourages
youngsters in the city to get involved in the sport.
Alumni have also been engaged and regularly attend events, receive
newsletters and introduce new sponsors.
The club also regularly
fundraises and in the past have completed
everything from the Three Peaks to street collections.
In total the Club raised a whopping £17,000
Top tips:

Use personal networks for sponsorship; have a sponsorship

Even more helpful hints and tips
Get everyone involved in fundraising not just the
committee – it will increase your fundraising opportunities!
You may even consider having a Fundraising position on the
committee.
Look at what connections individuals in your club
have - who is in your Club and Society? Where do they work?
Where do their parents work? Can these contacts help you
raise funds as sponsors or through donating either money or
items for fundraising auctions?
Look at the skill
set of those in your society – are
people musically talented? Put on a fundraiser gig! Is anyone a
good baker? Have a bake sale! Or even put on a talent show
to showcase everyone’s individual talents!
Maybe one of your members is good at arts and crafts or has
other marketable products – have an enterprise
stand in
the union for free to sell your products and raise money for your
society!
Join forces with other societies - create a joint
fundraising strategy to pool everyone’s ideas and assets and
share the benefits. This will help make any events you host
bigger and better and maybe even recruit new members!
Remember
Alumni
and that they used to love the club as
much as you do. Most want to help!
With everything you do ensure you’re marketing
best way possible.
