Mind the gap and
make hot savings
AS winter approaches, Beautiful
Blinds is offering a product that will
keep you warmer during the cold
months and cut down on heating bills.
Beautiful Blinds offers the Australian-exclusive Ecosmart Honeycomb
ComforTrack energy-saving sidetrack system for double-cell honeycomb blinds.
The system helps improve the
thermal efficiency of your home by
decreasing gaps between the edge of
your shades, and sealing in heat in
your rooms to prevent warm air from
escaping.
With standard shades, warm air
can escape through large gaps, which
causes significant energy loss as you
try to warm your house.
The ComforTrack system prevents
this with three separate areas that
help seal in the heat around your windows.
The first is a specially designed
ComforTrack Flex Seal, which is a
clear spring seal that is hidden between the honeycomb blind and the
sidetracks. It flexes open and closed
when the shade is raised and lowered
to help create an energy-tight seal.
The second sees specially designed

bottom rail end caps that fit over the
sidetracks and allow for smooth
movement when raising and lowering
the shade.
The third barrier of protection is
easy to miss, but makes a big impact
in closing the energy gap. The small
space between the head rail and the
window frame is sealed off with the
Fuzzy Seal, which is discretely at-
tached to the back of the head rail.
The Fuzzy Seal traps air, but allows
moisture to pass through.
And with super-easy installation, it
is a breeze to put together on your
current windows.
ComforTrack is available with several hardware options, including top

healthy
ACCORDING to the National
Asthma Council of Australia, the
most common allergic triggers of
asthma are dust-mites, pollen
and mould — all of which can be
found in split-system
airconditioners.
Most people are under the
impression that cleaning the
filters of an airconditioner is all
you need to do in order to keep
it running efficiently and cleanly.
Filters are designed to allow
airflow, while capturing any
larger particles of pollutants such
as animal fur, fluff and dust balls.
However, if they were to stop
everything getting through they
would prevent the necessary
airflow and the unit wouldn’t
function.
As a guide, contaminants
larger than about 80 microns are
captured. The problem is that
most dust, pollen, mould spores,
mildew, fungi, airborne grease,
bacteria and even human and
pet skin cells are much smaller —
less than 10 microns — so they
pass through the filters and
accumulate deep inside and
behind the coil, on the barrel fan

and many other internal
components. Many of these
grow and spread rapidly in their
new-found protected and hidden
environment.
Rodents also like the dark
recesses of airconditioners and
leave behind faeces and urine.
Therefore, if you are not
getting the full internals of your
airconditioner HydroKleened,
you are going to experience
higher power bills caused by
suffocated units having to
struggle to suck air in past a
clogged coil.
And anyone with respiratory
issues, such as asthma or
allergies, could suffer from
exposure to a build-up of
allergens being blown back into
the room.
Cleaning the internals is not
something that can be done by
maintenance managers or a local

commercial equipment and
environmentally friendly
cleaning agents.

AIR flow in a home with a
heater is an important issue
when it comes to conserving
winter warmth.
Modern fan-forced heaters
can pump out so much heat
that, if they are run at full capacity, it can be unbearably hot
in that room, while an adjacent
room can still be cold.
Leaving the connecting
door open is not the complete
answer because often most of
the heat is trapped above the
door level and heat transfer
can be inefficient.
If the home has high ceilings, the convected heat tends
to stay up high — well above
the floor level where people
and pets are looking for
warmth.
Tasmanian company Brierley Hose and Handling, based
at Derwent Park, manufactures the duct and makes up
warm-air transfer kits.
These kits are an economical, efficient method of quickly
transferring excess heat from a
solid-fuel, electric or gas room
heater to another part of the
home.
A duct intake is positioned
in the room with the heater
and insulated ducting is run
through the roof cavity to a diffuser in one or more other
rooms, such as bedrooms.
A dual-bladed German
Blauberg inline fan with a fiveyear warranty pumps the air
through the system, forcing it
well down into the target room.
The kits come in three models, covering lengths up to
three, six and 12 metres.
The system is also ideal for
exhausting cooking odours
and moisture-laden air outside
and through the eaves or a wall
for bathrooms, laundries and
kitchens.

Make sure your home is fire-safe
LIFE-SAVER: Having operational smoke alarms throughout
the house is one of the best safety precautions.
AS the weather cools down,
the number of house fires will
increase in Tasmania.
However, most house fires
can be avoided. This is the key
message of the Tasmania Fire
Service 2016 Winter Home
Fire Safety Campaign.
“It is a statistical fact that winter is the busiest time for house
fires,” said TFS community education officer Chris Tomes.
“There are common danger
zones for fire around the home,
including heaters and open
fires, clothes dryers, the kitchen, faulty electrical goods and
people being careless with cigarettes and candles.”

that rental properties must be
fitted with smoke alarms.
“From May 1, 2016, all smoke
alarms in rental properties are
required, by law, to be either
mains powered with battery
back-up or have a 10-year nonremovable battery,” he said.
“We urge all Tasmanians to
test their smoke alarms, to
make sure they work.”
Mr Tomes said despite taking precautions, householders
should still plan an escape in
case of a house fire.
“While there is an increasing awareness of the importance of smoke alarms, there
are still too many Tasmanians who have not developed a home fire escape
plan,” he said.
“One of the key reasons people lose their lives
in house fires is that thick
smoke, minimal visibility
and the effects of smoke
inhalation can cause people to panic, lose their
bearings and get trapped
in their own home.”
Devise a strategy with
all members of the household and ensure that
everyone knows two exits
from every room, particularly bedrooms. Your escape plan should include:
WORKING smoke alarms.
KNOWING two safe ways out
of every room.

Pellets earning glowing reviews
CONVENIENT: Pellet fuel supplies have been secured.
SALES of pellet heaters have
skyrocketed because of the
state’s electricity crisis, says
Pellet Fires Tasmania owner
Rob Douglas.
Mr Douglas said Tasmanians were concerned
about rising electricity bills and
were returning to combustionstyle heating in droves.
“Many people tell us that

about electricity shortages as a
result of the Basslink/Hydro
emergency.
“Natural gas is popular for
heating and hot water, but is
not available in all areas.
Modern wood heaters meet
very
stringent
emission
standards and are cleanburning, high-heat output and
economical home heaters.
“Pellet heaters provide the
warmth of a wood heater but
with the convenience of a gas
heater.’’
Pellet fuel, also known as
bio-energy, is manufactured in
Tasmania, interstate and
overseas using waste sawdust
from sawmills, producing costeffective fuel suitable to use in
a pellet heater.
The typical customer burns
about 66 bags of pellets per year.
At $10 per 15kg bag, this equates
to $660 a year for heating.
Mr Douglas said the cost of
pellet heating was similar to
wood and natural gas heating
and had become the preferred
choice for people who cannot
get natural gas or do not want
to manage a wood heater.
“Pellet Fires Tasmania also
specialises in Australian-made
wood and gas heaters,’’ he said.
“However, the growth is
definitely in pellet heating,
much like it has been in
Europe for many years.
“Pellet heating is cleanburning, virtually smoke-free,
and
thermostat-controlled
with a programmable timer to
turn them on and off.
“A very small amount of
electricity is used to operate
the in-built electronics, but
they can operate on an
optional
uninterruptable
power supply during power
failures if required.”
Mr Douglas said pellet fuel
supply was now secure, with
agreements to back up local
manufacturing during peak
demand, with imported pellet
fuel at the same price as the
local Tasmanian fuel.
Tasmania has the largest
range of pellet heaters in the
country, with more than 16
models to choose from and a
range of hydronic pellet
heaters for central heating.
