The Illinois Chapter of the

The Illinois Chapter of the International
Interior Design Association is proud
to announce the launch of their first
professional design awards competition
The RED Awards,
Recognizing Exemplary Design
IIDA Illinois celebrated the first annual
RED Awards on April 18, 2013 at Venue
SIX10 in the Spertus Institute, overlooking
Chicago’s Millennium Park.
In the spirit of the Academy Awards, the
event was a red carpet gala with cocktails
and mingling in the stunning glass atrium,
followed by an auditorium presentation
recognizing the best design projects from
our esteemed interior design community.
Our distinguished judges reviewed nearly
100 entries from over three dozen Illinoisbased design firms and designers.
The RED Awards also aligned for the first
time, The Michelle Roberts Award, recog
nizing the best student design projects
from 5 design schools throughout Illinois.
Please join us in honoring our Select,
Premier, and Best of Show winners
for 2013!
A special thank you to our judges, sponsors,
RED Awards Committee, IIDA Illinois Board
members, and our emcee Cheryl Durst.
To the Illinois design community, our heart
felt thanks for making this first endeavor
such a tremendous success.

Jurors
Neil Frankel
Prior to accepting the Fitz-Hugh Scott
Endowed Chair for Design Excellence
at the University of Wisconsin Graduate
School of Architecture and Urban Planning,
Neil Frankel was responsible for Skidmore,
Owings & Merrill’s Chicago architectural
interior practice. In addition to his academic
commitment, Neil Frankel runs an indepen
dent studio, Frankel + Coleman. He is one
of five Fellows of both AIA and IIDA
and a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures
Council. In 2005, Mr. Frankel was the
sole recipient of the (AIAS) Education
Honor Award.
Morlen Sinoway
His studies at the The School of the Art
Institute (1975) provided a foundation for
Chicago native, Morlen Sinoway’s utilitarian
direction, which he later translated into
a unique blend of reduced simplicity and basic
materials creating a visually enticing style
of custom furniture. Sinoway’s art and furniture have exhibited in prestigious shows
and venues, including The Art Institute of
Chicago and The Salone De Mobile in Milan.
In 1990, he started a multidisciplinary
design studio, under his name—Morlen
Sinoway Atelier. The Atelier is well known
for actively supporting and galvanizing
the independent design scene in Chicago,
and for bringing some of the worlds most
renowned furniture brands to the Midwest.
In 2005, Sinoway developed “The Guerrilla
Truck Show”. Held during NeoCon every year,
on the dock-height sidewalks outside his
Atelier, the event serves as a platform for
design creative’s of all types to showcase
their work in a temporary gallery space.
Over the years, the event has blossomed
from 13 trucks up to 60 trucks with over
6,000 guests in attendance in 2012.
Sinoway is continually featured in numerous
magazines (including Details, Lucky, Monocle,
Ideat and Interior Design), newspapers,
and book publications for his insights, The
Guerrilla Truck Show, and his Atelier. He was
an adjunct teacher at Harrington School of
Design and routinely participates in critique
for the School of The Art Institute’s Architecture, Interior architecture, and Designed
Object department.
Nada Andric
As the Associate Director at Skidmore,
Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), Nada Andric
focuses her extensive talent and experience
on the firm’s large-scale global architecture
and interior design projects. Her design
accomplishments have been recognized
with over 20 national and international design
awards, including her recent induction into
the Interior Design Hall of Fame. Ms. Andric
integrates sophisticated art programs into
her interior design projects for a diverse range
of clients, including major banks, law firms,
high end hospitality brands and private
residential clients around the world. She
initiated and led the inclusion of more than
800 pieces of art in the Burj Khalifa. Designed
by SOM, with the interior program overseen
by Ms. Andric, Burj Khalifa is currently the
tallest building in the world. In addition to
her work at the firm, Ms. Andric participates
as a design juror, roundtable participant
and lecturer. Her work has been featured
in various publications worldwide.
