Purpose of Position
The purpose of positions this classification is to perform routine building and grounds maintenance and
custodial tasks.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Incumbents perform routine building and grounds maintenance manual labor and operates light
equipment such as floor cleaning machines, mowers and trimmers. The work is performed under the
supervision of maintenance supervisors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Sweeps, mops, strips and waxes floors. Vacuums and shampoos carpets.
Scours restroom fixtures and drinking fountains. Washes windows and mirrors.
Empties trash containers. Picks up litter.
Mows, trims and fertilizes grass. Weeds and waters flower beds.
Plows snow from parking areas, walkways and entrances.
Performs routine building maintenance tasks.
Assists in minor plumbing and electrical repairs.
May responds to building emergency calls on occasion.
Removes snow and ice from streets as assigned.
Maintains regular and predictable on-site attendance.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
High school diploma or equivalent, with prior buildings and grounds maintenance experience, or any
combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. A valid
driver’s license required. Employee must pass and maintain a fingerprint based criminal history record
check.

Ability to assemble, copy, record and transcribe data and information, following a prescribed plan. Ability
to compare, count, differentiate, measure and/or sort data and information.

standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others.
Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information such as work orders, operating
instructions, schedules and records.
Ability to communicate effectively with department personnel.

Ability to apply functional reasoning in performing routine functions following clearly prescribed standard

Physical Requirements
Ability to operate, maneuver and/or steer equipment and machinery requiring simple but continuous
adjustments such as floor scrubbers, brooms, mops, snow removal equipment, mowers, rakes, shovels,
etc.
Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring moderate skill, such
as cutting, painting and drilling.
Ability to exert moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing
and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
Ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes,
sounds, odors and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
Environmental Adaptability
Ability to work under conditions which require exposure to environmental factors such as temperature
variations and extremes, odors, toxic agents, machinery, wetness and/or dust. This exposure may cause
some discomfort and presents a risk of injury.
