SMART AQUARIUM UILIAN RIES

SMART AQUARIUM
UILIAN RIES
Story
Context
The use of aquarium with ornamental fish in homes as a way to enhance the
environment, has presence since the fourteenth century. Although the fishkeeping is
considered as a hobby, there are a number of factors that need attention and
intervention, daily measurements of levels of substances such as ammonia, nitrate
and salts, are important to maintain an appropriate environment and health of
present beings. These beings need care with food and environmental compliance
according to their type and period of life. The use of automated systems for control
rooms, houses and buildings, has grown primarily through the use of new
technologies, easy access and low cost.
Problem
The tasks that a fish keeper must perform during the period, should include
feed, water maintenance and cleaning of the tank. All these tasks have different
intervals, they are daily or weekly. Can not always be carried out with full attention
required or the optimal frequency, because the aquarist has no time availability.
Perform the integration of the Internet of Things on the scenario of an aquarist that
has faced difficulty to give the necessary attention to feeding and monitoring of water
status, will enable perform unattended tasks while still getting data in real time, and
share data for studies comparison of multiple scenarios and states of view. The
implementation of a system based on IoT must take daily support, sending status
information about water, pH, temperature and lighting.
Objectives
● Develop a system based on Internet of Things in an ornamental aquarium, to
manage environmental sensors, such as temperature, light and pH, and
present them in a user interface.
● Automating activities for aquarium treatment.
● Share statistical data over the internet.
● Provide a management and control system for an aquarium.

Point of View (PoV)
Focus
This section is focused to understand what Charlotte needs to solve her problems.
The steps uses not only the main perspective, as a fish keeper, but also uses only
the water tank focus. The vision was splitted by two, to give better insight about each
opportunity in this challenge.
POV
●
As a tank maintainer, I need a way to measure the temperature level, so that it controls the
heater.
●
As a tank maintainer, I need a way to measure the lighting level, so that it controls the
lamp.
●
As a tank maintainer, I need a way to measure the pH, so that it alerts my phone.
●
As a fish keeper, I need a way to dispense food, so that I can schedule each meal.
●
As a fish keeper, I need a way to watch the water tank, so that I observe plant diseases
and sick fishes.
●
As a fish keeper, I need a way to keep measured level during all, so that I access all the
history.

Prototype
Views
The prototype was divided in 5 views:
● Status: Show current aquarium status (lighting, temperature and pH).
● History: Store all reads by each sensor.
● Camera: Watch aquarium video.
● Profile: Select fish species at aquarium to equalize the environment.
● Schedule: Configure food dispenser timer.

Scenarios
This project wears many possible environments, since fish industry to monitor their
fishes, until a hobbyist.
The idea solved with Charlotte, is the same found in others fish shops and perhaps,
people with fish at home.
Some categories mapped scenarios and places that could be applied with this
solution, are:
Industry
● Captive fish.
University
● Museum’s water tanks.
● Research on marine life.
Retail
● Pet shop.
● Some decorative points as in restaurants.
Home
● Fish keeping as a hobby.
