REFLECTION:
This past Sunday was the celebration of the Epiphany of the Lord. Sometimes it’s easy to put our trust in God. Like when life is
golden, relationships are carefree the money meets the bills with change to spare, and we sleep soundlessly every night. “God is
Good!” we affirm. Then come the challenging times when health frays, money dries up, tempers grow short, and we toss and turn
till dawn. God is –what, exactly? And where? Has the lord’s face ceased to shine on us?
Epiphany is the celebration of God’s manifestation in the world. Epiphany means we see God. By definition, God always sees us and
is mindful of us. But what can we do when our view of God grows faint and darkness seems to take over? The biblical response is to
move toward the light! In faith, in hope and in love, we re-discover God’s self revealing presence. “Upon you the Lord shines, and
over you appears his glory” Is:60:2. Where are the most reliable places you find God present in your day to day life?

PRE-REGISTRATION FORMS
In the past, we have sent our pre-registration forms home in May to plan for the next school year. Due to the opening of St. Lorenzo Ruiz school, part of the planning
process for next year will be determining the school population for our school and the new school. In the next couple of weeks, we will be sending pre-registration forms
home for each family to complete. By completing the forms in a timely fashion will help us determine the resources required in our school and in St. Lorenzo Ruiz school.
Also, if your children are planning on going to St. Lorenzo Ruiz school, please read the insert below regarding student registration and the playground association
ST. LORENZO RUIZ CATHOLIC SCHOOL UPDATES
A reminder that student registrations are now being accepted. Families can get all the registration information on our school website
https://www.gscs.ca/studentsandfamilies/schools/lor. Although registrations are accepted all year, we hope to have the vast majority of registrations complete by the end
of January, 2017. Having accurate registration numbers helps with staffing and resource allocation.
Mark your calendars, on January 31st, 2017 @ 7:00 p.m. we will be holding the St. Lorenzo Kindergarten Information Night at St. Peter School. Parents can expect to
meet the Kindergarten teacher and receive information about kindergarten programing at St. Lorenzo. The school principal will also be able to answer questions from
parents with children from grades 1-8 who also want to attend and register.
ST. LORENZO PLAYGROUND ASSOCIATION
Dear future St. Lorenzo families,
A small group of parents have met on 2 occasions to learn about and discuss the process needed to make sure we have a playground structure at our new St. Lorenzo
School. Although the process is moving forward, having a playground requires the commitment of members of our future community in order to make it possible. At this
point we are needing to have an executive named in order to create our Playground association and move plans forward. The positions and a summary of their roles that
need to be filled are as follows:
i.
ii.
iii.
iv.
Chair – the Chair shall call all meetings, lead the committee as well as the meetings.
Vice-Chair – The Vice Chair shall take on any responsibilities delegated by the Chair and take up the Chair’s roles in their absence.
Secretary – The Secretary shall take and maintain all minutes of the meetings and maintain accurate and up to date records.
Treasurer – The Treasurer shall keep proper accounting records in compliance with bylaws of the association, be responsible for the
deposit of money and recording the disbursement of the funds of the Association and render to the Executive Committee whenever
required.
v. Members at Large - Member at Large shall participate in regular Association meetings and support the work of the Association
On January 18th from 7pm to 8:30 pm at St. Peter School, there will be a meeting to create the playground association and establish the executive. After this is
completed, playground plans will move forward. Please take 10 seconds to click on the link below and let us know your intention in regards to the St. Lorenzo
Playground.

HELP PROTECT LOCALLY ELECTED BOARDS OF EDUCATION (UPDATE)
The Government of Saskatchewan is conducting a governance review for kindergarten to Grade 12 education—part of the “transformational change” to education we
have been hearing about since June’s provincial budget. Deputy Premier and Minister of Education Don Morgan has stated that amalgamating school divisions and
eliminating elected boards of education, and replacing them with government appointed boards, are possibilities. A recently released report is available at
http://bit.ly/PerrinsReport
Locally elected boards are accountable to the electorate and help hold the provincial government to account. They are important advocates for ensuring excellence in
education. Who better to serve the needs of students—which are unique to each division, and even each school within divisions—than those elected by our community to
represent our community?
Greater Saskatoon Catholic School’s Board of Education asks for your support. Here are some possible ways that you can express your support for education and stand
up for locally elected boards of education:
The provincial government welcomes feedback until January 23, 2017. You can fill out an online form at http://bit.ly/K-12ReviewFeedback or email

COLD TEMPERATURES
We continue to notice that some students are not dressed for the cold temperatures. Please remind your children before they leave for school to wear
their winter jackets, toque, mitts, ski pants and boots so they are comfortable on the playground during the recess breaks. Indoor recesses will occur if
the temperature/wind chill exceeds -25° C.
SCHEDULE AND EXPECTATIONS FOR SLEDDING
Now that the snow has arrived, students can bring their sleds to school to slide on the hill during recess. We have reviewed the expectations of using the hill with all our
students today. Please remind your child(ren) of the following expectations:
1) Students can only use carpets or soft sided sliders. No wood, metal, or hard plastic sliders are allowed.
2) Slide down the hill feet first
3) Maximum of two people per carpet or slider. Students should not make trains or put multiple sliders together.
4) Students slide down the middle of the hill and return to the top, walking up along either side of the hill or up the designated walk way up the middle of the hill.
There will be pylons set up as a guide.
5) Any student not following the expectations will lose their privileges from using the hill.
Below is the schedule for sledding on the hill:
Left Side of the Hill
AM Recess
Gr. 1-2
Lunch
Gr. 1-2
PM Recess
Gr. 1-2
Right Side of the Hill

SCHOOL ARRIVAL REMINDER
Students are welcome to go to their classrooms at 8:30 a.m. each morning. If your child has to arrive at school earlier than this time they are welcome to attend the
Before & After School Program (244-7820). We ask that students do not arrive at school prior to this time so adequate supervision is available. Supervision on the
playground begins at 8:40 a.m. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
PARKING REMINDER
We remind parents not to park in the staff parking lot as well as to pay attention to our signs in front of the school. Our school buses have a designated
