2016-2017 Registration Guide Grade 8 7th GRADE COURSES ENGLISH 7 EXTENDED CURRICULUM FEE: $30 English/Language Arts 7 is designed to address Ohio’s 7th grade Common Core Standards. The Common Core Standards at this grade level define competencies for 7th grade and will gauge the degree to which a student has met the overall content standards. Instruction will include: vocabulary, expository and informational text, literature, grammar, writing, listening and speaking. The course concludes with equations and functions, geometry, square roots, and probability. This course is for students on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The course begins with integers and rational numbers and moves through working with linear equations, inequalities, and functions. These principles are related to the properties or interactions within and between systems. Topics covered in this course are Cycles and Patterns of Earth and the Moon, Conservation of Mass and Energy, and Cycles of Matter and Flow of Energy. This class adheres to the Ohio State Standards and adapts the objectives into a format for greater understanding. Design & Modeling -This unit uses solid modeling (a very sophisticated mathematical technique for representing solid objects) to introduce students to the design process. Utilizing this design approach, students understand how solid modeling has influenced their lives. Students also learn sketching techniques, and use descriptive geometry as a component of design, measurement, and computer modeling. Using design briefs or abstracts, students create models and documentation to solve problems.(9 weeks) Energy & Environment -Students investigate the importance of energy in our lives and the impact energy use has on the environment. They design and model alternative energy sources and participate in an energy expo to demonstrate energy concepts and innovative ideas. Students evaluate ways to reduce energy consumption through energy efficiency and waste management techniques. (9 weeks) EXPLORATORY FOREIGN LANGUAGE Prerequisite: A grade of a B or higher in 6 th grade Language Arts/teacher recommendation This course is designed as an introduction to French and Spanish language and culture. Students will be introduced to vocabulary which includes introductions, numbers, family, and more. Students will also be introduced to some cultural aspects including geography, food, and historic sites. Students who complete the semester introductory course will be well prepared to begin French 1 or Spanish 1. BAND 7 Prerequisite: 1 year experience playing a musical instrument FEE: $20* This course is a continuation of concepts learned in band 6. An emphasis will be placed on technique, tone quality, and sight-reading. Students are required to perform at 3 evening performances throughout the year and 1 performance at OMEA Large Group Festival. Other performances may be added at the director’s discretion. MEN’S CHORUS 7 FEE: $15 7th Grade Men’s Chorus is a performing organization that applies choral technique on the most basic level of choral performance. It is a TB (Tenor, Baritone) choir that performs varied repertoire. Performance opportunities are provided which include concerts, school functions, and competitions. Students will find that the majority of performances are after school or occasionally on a weekend. All performances are required for a passing grade. WOMEN’S CHORUS 7 FEE: $15 7th Grade Women’s Chorus is a performing organization that applies choral technique on the most basic level of choral performance. It is an SSA (Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto) choir that performs varied repertoire. Performance opportunities are provided which include concerts, school functions, and competitions. Students will find that the majority of performances are after school or occasionally on a weekend. All performances are required for a passing grade. ART 7 FEE: $15 Interested in exploring and making art that is unique, expressive, and personal? During this course you will develop creative skills through a variety of experiences that may include drawing, painting, sculpting, printmaking, and clay. We will investigate the Elements of Art and Principles of Design and learn techniques to improve basic art skills. PHYSICAL EDUCATION 7 PE will provide students with the knowledge, skills, and strategies associated with many different individual and team sports/activities. This course will also encourage proper social and personal behaviors and a lifetime of fitness by meeting or exceeding criterion-referenced health related physical fitness standards. COMPUTERS & CAREERS Curriculum is designed to give 7th grade students an introduction to numerous careers, while learning and exploring different functions of computers. Students will work in a computer lab using Learning.com, Google Applications, and Adobe Creative Suite. Students will continue digital citizenship curriculum & typing with Learning.com. They will also have an introduction to graphics and web design, google applications for education, an introduction to video and web content creation and editing. ONLINE HEALTH (1/2 HS Credit) Health is a semester course that will guide students through the many dimensions of wellness: Correlating Human Body Systems, Nutrition, and Physical Activity to comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention; analyze the validity of health information, products, and services; learn strategies and practice behaviors to reduce health risks; promote safe and healthy relationships; understanding the dangers of tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use. Every 7th grade student will be entered into this and must complete before high school graduation. INTERVENTION/SUPPORT Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation This course is designed for students who are receiving services under an Individualized Education Plan. Students will receive assistance with required coursework and learn a variety of study skills in order for them to be successful in the General Education curriculum. This course will also assist students in the transition process from High School to postsecondary academics or employment. Completion of this course will fulfill college requirements for Algebra 1. LEVEL 2 HONORS ALGEBRA (1 HS Credit) Prerequisite: Pre Algebra 7 with Teacher Recommendation As the second Honors level math course in the Honors Math Program, Honors Algebra is an academically rigorous formal Algebra course for 8th grade Honors math students. In the course, the students are expected to cover more material and at the end of the course have a complex understanding of the Algebra sequence. (For 8 th Grade students only) The first-year student is introduced to basic conversational Spanish related to a given situation (e.g., eating in a restaurant, greeting friends, or discussing likes and dislikes). Basic grammar is introduced as a preparation for a more detailed study in Spanish II. The student also studies the life style, cultural differences and similarities of the people in the Hispanic world. Reading and writing are introduced when appropriate levels of proficiency are achieved. LEVEL 2 FRENCH 1 (1 HS Credit) FEE: $22 Prerequisite: Recommendation from foreign language teacher. (For 8 th Grade students only) The first-year student is introduced to basic conversational French related to a given situation (e.g., eating in a restaurant, greeting friends or discussing likes and dislikes). Basic grammar is introduced in English as a preparation for a more detailed study in French II. The student also studies the lifestyle, cultural differences and similarities of the people of the French-speaking world. Reading (translation) is introduced the second semester. LEVEL 2 BAND 8 Prerequisite: 2 year experience playing a musical instrument FEE: $20* This course is a continuation of concepts learned in band 7. Students are expected to continue to develop their theory and technique while expanding their musical vocabulary and experiences. Students are required to perform at 3 evening performances throughout the year and 1 performance at OMEA Large Group Festival. Other performances may be added at the director’s discretion. It will provide students with the knowledge, skills, and strategies associated with many different individual and team sports. This course will also encourage respectful behavior and a lifetime of fitness by meeting or exceeding criterion-referenced healthrelated physical fitness standards. LEVEL 1 PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2 (1/4 HS Credit) - Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation for HS credit PE 2 is a required course designed to give students the opportunity to meet each of the physical education standards 1-6 benchmark B adopted by the Ohio Department of Education. It will provide students with the knowledge, skills, and strategies associated with many different individual and team sports. By the completion of PE 2, the students will create and develop a fitness plan based on their individual goals to achieve each component of health-related fitness. LEVEL 1 FUNDAMENTALS IN ART (1/2 HS Credit) FEE: $15 Fundamentals in Art is a foundation art course designed to introduce students to various media including; pencil drawing, painting, clay, and mixed media collage. Projects will be centered around the five basic elements of art: line, shape, color, value and texture. Potential projects include still-life drawings, self portraits, abstract images, and functional clay pieces. This class will be based on project grades, quiz, and test grades. DIGITAL MEDIA FEE: $5 Curriculum is designed to give 8th grade students an introduction to the latest technology and digital media topics. Students will work in a computer lab learning about the following subjects in depth: google applications, web and graphics, introduction to video and web content creation and editing. Students will focus on numerous digital media projects as part of the weekly announcements.
