in fall 2009, this state-of-the-art natural history museum celebrates the region’s beauty and resources.

Directions to Chico (30 miles from Farm Sanctuary)
From Farm Sanctuary, turn left onto Newville Road/Highway 32. Stay on this road for 30 miles (about 45 minutes), passing through Orland and Hamilton City, until you arrive in Chico. Make a left on West 2nd Avenue and continue straight
for several blocks. This road will lead you into downtown Chico.
Parks and Scenic Attractions
Bidwell Park and Chico Creek Nature Center – 1968 East 8th St., Chico. 530-891-4671. Divided into Upper and Lower
parks, Bidwell follows the refreshing Chico Creek throughout the city. Offers picnic areas, playgrounds, swimming
holes, a community pool, hiking trails, walking paths, and mountain biking trails.
Black Butte Lake – 19225 Newville Rd., Orland. 530-865-4781. Across the street from Farm Sanctuary, hike a short trail
to overlook beautiful Black Butte Lake. Drive one mile west on Highway 32 for camping spots, boat launch, swimming
area, and playground. Going east on Highway 32, look for signs pointing out the Orland Buttes Campground and
Grizzly Flat trail.
Children’s Playground – 1st St. (between Main and Broadway), Chico. 530-895-6144. Jungle gym and large field for
running and athletic games.
DeGarmo Park – Esplanade and Leora Court, Chico. 530-895-4711. Off-leash dog park, ball fields, walking paths, and
picnic areas.
Feather Falls National Scenic Trail – Feather Falls. 530-675-1146. Sixty-eight miles from Orland. The nine-mile roundtrip hike offers an incredible view of Bald Rock Dome, Bald Rock Canyon, and the 640-foot waterfall known as Feather
Falls.
Honey Run Covered Bridge – 1384 Honey Run Rd., Chico. 530-895-1243. The country’s only three-span covered
bridge. Water play possible on Butte Creek, depending on the season.
Lely Aquatic Park – 200 County Rd. MM, Orland. 530-865-1610. Park with pond, playgrounds, athletic fields, sand
volleyball court, basketball court, and picnic areas with BBQ grills. From Farm Sanctuary, take Highway 32 east into
Orland. Make a right on Papst Avenue, then turn left onto E. South Street.
Mendocino National Forest – 825 N. Humboldt Ave., Willows. 530-934-3316. The forest’s one million acres of
mountains and canyons offer opportunities for camping, hiking, backpacking, boating, nature study, photography, and
off-highway vehicle travel. Drive west from Willows, Corning, or Red Bluff to enter.
Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge – Willows. 530-934-2801. Located in the midst of the Pacific Flyway, the refuge
is a prime location for bird-watching, especially during the winter. From Orland, take I-5 south and exit at County Road
57. Turn east over the overpass to Highway 99W. Drive 4.5 miles south to the refuge entrance.
Vinsonhaler Park – Roosevelt Avenue (at East Street), Orland. 530-865-1610. Lovely park with athletic fields, pool,
horseshoe pits, lighted tennis courts, picnic tables, and a children’s playground called Lollipop Land. From Farm
Sanctuary, take Highway 32 east into Orland. Make a left onto East Street.
Whiskeytown National Recreation Area – Whiskeytown. 530-246-1225. Boasts a large lake for kayaking, canoeing,
and swimming; numerous waterfalls and pleasant trails for hiking and mountain biking. Camping also available. Go
north on I-5 for 58 miles, and take the Highway 44 west exit toward Downtown Redding and Eureka. From Redding,
follow Highway 299 west toward Eureka for approximately eight miles to reach the area visitor center.
William B. Ide Adobe State Historic Park – Red Bluff. 530-529-8599. The park features an old adobe home, carriage
shed, blacksmith shop, and visitor center overlooking the Sacramento River. From Farm Sanctuary, take I-5 north for 30
miles. Take exit 650 for Adobe Road, then turn right onto Adobe Road.
Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area – Corning. 530-839-2112. Enjoy the Sacramento River by boat or by beach at
this pleasant oak woodland park. Camping and hiking also available. From Farm Sanctuary, take I-5 north for 17 miles
to Corning. Take exit 630, turn right onto South Avenue, and continue for five miles.
LaRocca Vineyards Organic Wine Tasting Room – 222 W. 2nd St., Downtown Chico. 800-808-9463. Open Wednesday–
Friday from 1:30–8 p.m., Saturday from 12–8 p.m., and Sunday from 1:30–6 p.m.
Monks Wine Lounge & Bistro – 128 W. 2nd St., Chico. 530-343-3408. Offers some of the best in Nor-Cal wines,
including local vegan varieties. From Farm Sanctuary, take Highway 32 east to Chico, then make a left onto West 2nd
Avenue. Open daily from 3 p.m.–12 a.m.
Odyssey Winery and Vineyards – 6237 Cohasset Rd., Chico. 530-891-9463. Open Saturdays, May–December, from
1–6 p.m. From Farm Sanctuary, take Highway 32 into Chico, and then make a left onto East Avenue, a left onto
Esplanade, a right onto East Lassen Avenue, and a left onto Cohasset Road.
Nightlife
Friday Night Concerts – Downtown City Plaza, Chico. 530-345-6500. Features local entertainment in a family-friendly
atmosphere. Held on Fridays during the summer from 7–8:30 p.m.
Sierra Nevada Brewery & Big Room – 1075 East 20th St., Chico. 530-345-2739. Full bar featuring a variety of locallybrewed ales, some veg-friendly dining options, and live music weekly. Open seven days a week. Taproom and Restaurant

located 11 miles south of Orland. Closed Mondays.
Orchard Lanes – 2397 Esplanade, Chico. 530-895-3257. Bowling alley with arcade. Open daily. Hours are Monday
and Wednesday from 1–11 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 4–11 p.m., Friday from 1 p.m.–1 a.m., Saturday from 12

Orland Bowl – 507 Monterey St., Orland. 530-865-4313. Open daily, but hours change frequently. Call for lane
availability.
Sacramento River – Rent an inflatable inner tube and float down the river. Head east on Highway 32 and enter the
river at the Irvine Finch Recreation Area in Hamilton City. Exit at Scotty’s Landing, about 45-60 minutes down the river.

and mandarins. From Farm Sanctuary, take I-5 south to South Street exit, then head east and follow road signs for the
orchards.
LaRocca Vineyards and Winery – 12360 Doe Mill Rd., Forest Ranch. 530-899-WINE. Certified organic vegan wines.
Wine tastings offered from 12–5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, or by appointment. From Farm Sanctuary, take Highway
32 east and go past the town of Forest Ranch. At about mile 13 from Chico, turn right onto Schott Road and stay left
going around the church on your left. Stay on the single-lane paved road, wind down, cross the bridge, and then go
back up the other side. The pavement ends and the road turns to an improved gravel road. At the fork, stay right and go
about 3/4 mile. The vineyard is on the left. Second gate (red/orange) goes to the winery.
Chico Certified Farmers Market – Corner of 2nd Avenue and Wall Street, Downtown Chico. 530-893-FARM. Shop for
fresh, local produce every Saturday, year-round, from 7:30 a.m.–1 p.m.
Country Pumpkins – Corner of Highway 99W and County Road 9, Orland. 530-865-1575. Open daily in October from
10 a.m.–6 p.m. Offers cornstalks and 21 varieties of pumpkins and gourds. From Farm Sanctuary, take Highway 32 east,
make a left on Highway 99, then go north and make a right onto County Road 9. Located across from the cemetery.
