Easter Sunday 27 March 2016
Dark days in Europe…………….
The horrific attacks in Brussels this past week cut right across the message of joy and hope
proclaimed by the great feast of Easter. The reality of hatred and fanaticism shown in these attacks
reminds us all of the depths of depravity that human kind is capable of and leaves us with a sense of
disbelief and horror. It’s hard to get into the minds of people so intent on inflicting death and
destruction on innocent people going about their daily tasks. Once again we see a distortion of the
Islamic faith being used as a justification for acts which are intrinsically evil and unjustifiable by any
standards.
This Holy week we have been celebrating the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus – not as a past
event in history but also as a present reality in the lives of the men and women of 2016.
It was injustice and hatred that led Jesus on his path of suffering – an innocent wrongly accused,
tortured and belittled and finally put to death, an unspeakable horrible death designed to humiliate
and annihilate. The suffering of this innocent man was to open a door to all humanity, a door that
leads into the very heart of God, a door through which we are all invited to follow. By enduring the
cross in a spirit of total obedience Jesus raised all human suffering giving it a redemptive quality
when united with his supreme sacrifice. This reality of redemptive suffering should bring us hope.
Hope is that virtue which sees beyond present reality to a deeper dimension, a dimension opened up
for us in Christ Jesus. When we have hope we can endure the darkest of days and the depths of
human suffering grounded in the Christian faith.
Easter Day is a day of triumph, a day when the horror of the cross yields to
the bright reality of the resurrection. In the light of Easter the cross of
Calvary takes on a whole new meaning, no longer a symbol of condemnation
and shame; now a symbol of triumph, proclaiming hope based on Christ’s
victory. Our world needs hope, each individual needs hope – when dark
clouds like Brussels hang heavily over us, when we suffer all kinds of
“slings and arrows of outrageous fortune” we need to hold fast and never
yield to despair.
Hope is a virtue that transforms, it transforms all human hardship and suffering giving it a new
meaning. Christ remains as the light that the darkness could not overpower, the light in which we are
all invited to walk. He is our life, he is our hope.
Christ is truly risen……Alleluia!

Census 2016
Question:
Can you explain how the census works? Do I have
to complete the form?
Answer (March 2015):
The Census of Population counts every person who
is in the State on a particular date. It establishes the
size of the population in the State and it also helps
to provide an accurate measure of population
changes due to inward and outward migration.
The census takes place every 5 years and is carried
out by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The
next census will be on Sunday 24 April 2016.
The census counts everyone who is present in the
State on the designated night, including visitors
who usually live abroad. Under the Statistics Act
1993, you are legally obliged to complete and
return the census form. If you refuse to provide this
information, or if you deliberately provide false
information, you may be fined.
Teams of enumerators deliver census forms to
every household and to every other type of place
where people may be present on census night (such
as hotels, guesthouses, hospitals, ships). Everyone
who is actually on the premises on census night,
including visitors, should be counted. Census
enumerators call to all households to deliver forms

St Mary’s various sizes and
colours and shiny, very shiny.
Fr Philip thought I had lost
mine when he saw my pink hair at 11 Mass on the
6th March, but I informed him that it was a
fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society’s 98fm
Shave or Dye. Three sisters and a niece shaved
their locks and I dyed mine. Fr Philip also said that
he was fairly sure I would accept donations. The
congregation came to me after Mass and I collected
€280. This amount was lodged on the Irish Cancer
Society’s website on Monday.
I wish to extend thanks to Fr Philip and to all those
who contributed.
(Don’t let on, but I lost my marbles years ago.)

Ulster Local Food Hero – was given to him
because he promotes and cooks locally produced

Easter to all our Readers!
Hope all have a lovely time,
and don’t overdo it on those
chocolate eggs!
Remember, a moment on the
lips, is a lifetime on the hips!
Reflections on last Sunday’s wondrous nature,
from one of our readers, were a far cry from things
which unfolded since then.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all who were
involved in the sad event in Buncrana, on Sunday
evening last, when five people were tragically lost
to the sea. As the Bishop of Derry said, there are no
words to speak, we can only walk the road to
Calvary with them.
Sheer horror was realised in Brussels on Tuesday
morning when explosions at two locations took
away over 30 lives. What frightening times we live
in!
On a happier note! Congratulations to Sheila Joy
from Willsbrook, who will be playing for the car
on Winning Streak, on Saturday 2nd April, the
week after Easter! Good luck, Sheila!
The National Census will take place on Sunday
24 April, the anniversary of the 1916 Rising.
Enumerators will begin delivering census forms to
all homes in the next couple of weeks. No doubt,
Census 2016 like all previous counts, will prove to
be a great historical document for the future.
Clocks forward this weekend! We’ll feel we’re
getting up an hour earlier on Sunday morning, but
if the Easter Bunny has delivered, we won’t mind
too much!
Broken sheet of asbestos still visible in woods
along Main Road between St. Josephs and
Brookvale! If the Council don’t own this land (as
we have previously been told), surely they know
who does own it, and could do something about it.
Those Bike Lockers! They have been on site near
Woodies since December, but our local Councillors
had no mention of them in their notes prior to our
query in Lucan Newsletter. This is really the kind
of news we need to hear from them – not that they
attended the opening of the proverbial envelope!!!

Our Millennium Monument in Esker is looking

I see His Blood
Upon the Rose
I see his blood upon the rose
And in the stars the glory of his
eyes,
His body gleams amid eternal snows,
His tears fall from the skies.
I see his face in every flower;
The thunder and the singing of the
birds
Are but his voice—and carven by his
power
Rocks are his written words.
All pathways by his feet are worn,
His strong heart stirs the everbeating sea,
His crown of thorns is twined with
every thorn,
His cross is every tree.

and some last ditch defending from the Galway
defenders prevented Lucan from claiming the
prestigious National Cup for the 1st time.
Calasanctius struck first in the sixth minute to take
an early lead but Lucan showed tremendous
character to fight back and they deservedly
equalised after 20 minutes when the impressive
Josh Hogan headed home Paul Cleary's sweetly
delivered corner. Mark Greaney in the Galway goal
was called into action on numerous occasions as he
denied Yasser Mahrouk and Jimmy Mwanga with
impressive reflex saves. Calasanctius grabbed the
winning goal with just 2 minutes remaining to
break Lucan hearts. The team pressed desperately
for an equaliser but the Galway defence stood firm
and claimed the coveted trophy at Lucan’s
expense.
Proclamation Day: As part of the National
Proclamation Day to commemorate the 1916
Rising in schools across the country, our students
took part in a series of symbolic and moving events
on Tuesday. The Government-sponsored initiative
saw every educational institute receive a flag and a
copy of the Proclamation read out by Pádraig
Pearse in front of the GPO a century ago. The
day’s events started after lunch as 40 students
walked slowly from Woodies to the school holding
aloft green balloons. Attached to the balloons were
the names, ages and details of the deaths of 39
young people who were killed during the Easter
Rising. Each individual card was then read out on
the loudspeaker to nearly 600 students gathered in
the school yard as the balloons were released
individually into the air. A 40th balloon, this one
white, was released to symbolise peace as well as
everyone else who died in the Rising. It was a very
solemn and moving occasion which our students
respectfully remained completely silent and
reflective for. Two students were selected to raise
the two special flags, delivered to all schools, on
specially installed flagpoles on the school grounds.
1st yr Sam Keogh raised the Irish Free State Flag
while 6th yr Dean O’ Brien raised the Tricolour
while suitable music played in the background.
Ámhrán na bhFiann was then sung by all in
attendance. 5 students, Liam Bradley, James
Kebana, Brendan McCann, John Regan and David
Zrielskis, then stepped up to read a section of the
Proclamation. Dáire Byrne then read out a reimagined student version of the Proclamation
which reflected their hopes, dreams and
expectations for contemporary Ireland. The
students are to be highly commended for their
attentiveness, respect and complete co-operation
throughout the afternoon’s events. Well done also
to the students for the many fantastic posters and
projects they put together in their history classes
and displayed all around the school. Walking
around the school is an education in itself now
even before you enter any classroom.
Debating: Hard luck to Dáire Byrne and Cian
Egan Tormey who were both knocked out of the
UCD Schools Debating Competition at the 1-4
final stage this week. Both students debated very
well in their respective rounds but unfortunately
the standard was incredibly high with last year’s
national winners and 2 other finalists among the 4
debaters who advanced to the semi-final stage at
our debaters’ expense. Both students have debated
superbly all year so they can take great pride in
getting so far in such a prestigious competition. A
debate was held in our school on Monday as part of
the 1916 Rising Centenary commemoration events.
Our debaters took on those from St. Joseph’s
College and the motion was that “This House
believes that the leaders of the 1916 Rising were
not heroes but villains”. Our students were
proposing the motion and after a highly
entertaining and high standard debate the judges
had a difficult decision to make. After a few
minutes of tension and suspense the girls were
announced as winners by just 2 points. Our lads
took defeat graciously as the debate, although
keenly contested, was carried out in a very friendly
and good natured manner with plenty of banter and
humour thrown in for good measure!
Awards: Congratulations to 2nd yr Cillian Hurley
who won the Mark O' Neill Student of the Month
for February in recognition of his hard work, good
manners and diligence in all of his classes. Well
done also to 5th yr Ross Strong who won the
Sports Star of the Month in recognition of his
excellent performances for the school's u17 soccer
team. Ross was instrumental in helping the team
claim the coveted Leinster Junior Cup in February
and he was voted man-of-the-match in the final
against Wexford CBS. Freisin, comhghairdeas mór
le Calvin Davis ón rang 3A3 a bhuaigh an gradam
Gaeilgeoir na Míosa do mhí Feabhra mar
aitheantas ar an sár obair atá déanta aige sa rang
Gaeilge agus go háirithe an iarracht ollmhór a
dhéanann sé an Gaeilge a labhairt, go háirithe
taobh amuigh den seomra ranga agus geataí na
scoile. Congratulations also to Dáire Byrne from
3A3 who won a bronze medal at the Young
Economist of the Year ceremony that was held in
the Citywest Hotel on Monday. This is an annual
competition organised by PSST and NUI
Maynooth and Daire’s project compared historic
recessions in Ireland and America with the most
recent one in our country.
School tour: 77 students, accompanied by 6
teachers, flew out to Paris on Tuesday for their 4
day European tour. We will have news of how they
got on after the Easter holidays.
Theatre visit: 60 6th yrs, accompanied by Ms. O’
Brien and Mr. Downes, attended an excellent
production of William Shakespeare’s “King Lear”
in the Helix Theatre last week. The students have
all studied the play for their Leaving Cert English
course and the feedback from the students
afterwards was very positive. The performance was
of a high quality with a small but very talented cast
of actors, most of whom played multiple characters
and the students all felt that it added to their
understanding of the play greatly.
Movie Marathon: Coláiste Phádraig’s 2nd movie
marathon of the year was held in the school last
Saturday. 18 students turned up early in the
morning for a 12 hour Lord of the Rings movie
marathon and everyone had a great time. Over
100euro was raised for the Science Department in
the school as the event was organised by Mr.
Carey. There is already excitement brewing for the
next movie marathon after Easter where the
Captain America films will be shown
throughout the day.
Chess: Congratulations to 2nd yr Mustakim Ul
Haque who won the school’s annual Chess
competition on Tuesday. Mustakim took on the
talented 1st yr Jewel Joish in a tense and dramatic
final lasting almost 30mins and eventually his
greater experience told in the end with a superb
winning move. The standard of the final was
exceptional so both players can take pride in
performing so well throughout the competition and
especially in the high class final organised by Ms.
Ruane.

Sympathies: I extend my deepest sympathies to
the families of the victims in Derry and Donegal
and those affected by the recent atrocities in
Belgium. An Garda Síochána are liaising with the
relevant authorities in Brussels and other
international partners in the light of these attacks.
Government is determined that all necessary steps
will continue to be taken to counteract this threat
and will play its full part in doing so with its
international partners.
Park and Ride: I am pleased to see the recently
installed bike lockers as part of the N4 Cycle
scheme works. It’s great to see new, innovative
transport solutions in Lucan.
Clonburris SDZ: The Pre-Draft public
consultation process on Clonburris SDZ is
currently open until Monday 11th April. The
Council is inviting any interested parties to make

Future development of Clonburris lands:
The Council has launched a consultation on the
future plans for the lands between Lucan and
Clondalkin, including lands at Griffeen Avenue
and at Newcastle Road opposite Lucan Sarsfields. I
am listening to what residents and groups have to
say. I will be seeking measures to address local
traffic congestion before any new housing is built;
as well as providing much-needed parkland,
pitches and community facilities.
Road and footpath repairs: The Council has
agreed the 2016 Road Works Programme,
including footpath repairs at Esker Drive, Esker
Park and Beech Park; and road repairs/resurfacing
at Ballydowd Grove, Hermitage, Tubber Lane and
outside Divine Mercy schools.

removing untaxed and uninsured cars which had
been parked in local estates for long periods.

Parade and Celebrations.
Chronic Dumping at Tandy’s Lane, Lucan: I am
continuing to follow up with South Dublin County
Council in relation to the chronic dumping that is
ongoing on Tandy’s Lane in Lucan. The council
have confirmed that the road will close from 5am12noon on April 2, to facilitate a clean-up and the
removal of fly-tipped material from roadside
verges and ditches.
Play Space in Griffeen Valley Park Update: The
refurbishment of the Play Space in Griffeen Valley
Park is included in SDCC’s Capital Programme
2016 – 2018. This project will be progressed in
2016 and the next step is to produce a detailed
design and costing for this project.
Graffiti Clean Ups in Lucan: The council have
confirmed that graffiti removal is taking place this

attend to serious littering at Ash Park Grove and
along the road outside Ash Park to Griffeen

the area and as spring cleaning starts in many
estates around Lucan I will try to ensure this is
addressed.
Clonburris SDZ: The pre planning public

underway. I will be asking the Council to make the
consultation as accessible as possible to residents

The Council launched the consultative phase of
the Clonburris Special Development Zone
(SDZ): This is a successor to the earlier one but
now due to new National Guidelines we are
looking at a maximum of some 9,000 housing units
instead of the 15,000 on the last one on lands that
bridge Lucan and Clondalkin. We all know we
urgently need homes but we need a balance and the
Lucan-Clondalkin area already taken has more than
its share. I would advise anyone interested to in
the development of our area to click onto
www.sdcc.ie and onto a special Clonburris portal.
Here you will find a state of the art, first ever in
this County, inter-active facility where you can
both make your comments, see other comments
and inter-act with all others in a discussion on what
you want to see here. Don’t leave it to others.
This is YOUR opportunity and is a REAL effort by
your local Council to be user friendly. When the
consultative phase is over, us Councillors will mull
over the public opinions and draw up a plan that is
reflective of what you want and what National
Guidelines permit.
Clonburris SDZ: South Dublin County Council
held an information night last Wednesday
informing members of the public that they are
invited to make observations. Senior planners
where in attendance to answer questions. I met
with the planners on the night and informed that
the turnout was good. I am available to discuss any
aspect of the plan and encourage all to return the
postcard attached to the leaflet sent to all homes in
Lucan
1916 Commemoration: Well done to everyone

need assistance with their event please contact me.

Transport Users
Lucan Planning Council had a satisfactory meeting
with the local Councillors and they took most of
our views on board. They advised us to submit our
solutions to South Dublin Development plan that
has a closing date of March 29th. This gives us an
opportunity to have the traffic problems of Lucan
addressed. The main one is the opening of Tandy’s
Lane to the N4 at Tesco footbridge. Our
submission has been submitted to South Dublin
County Council on behalf of the residents of
Lucan. It can be inspected on their website shortly
afterwards.
