The Houston Bar Association’s Annual Law Day Celebration Essay Contest Deadline for contest entry: Friday, March 4, 2016, 5 p.m. The Law Day Celebration is 58 years old. Law Day is celebrated across the country each year on May 1st. Its purpose is to reserve a “special day of celebration by the American people in appreciation of their liberties and to provide an occasion for rededication to the ideas of equality and justice under law.” The theme for Law Day 2016 is “Miranda: More Than Words,” exploring the impact of Miranda v. Arizona, the Supreme Court case that guarantees protections afforded to all by the U.S. Constitution. In recognition of the theme, the Houston Bar Association is sponsoring a Law Day Essay Contest on the topic, “Why should all people be treated fairly, even if they are suspected of wrongdoing?” Grade Levels 9 - 12th grades may participate the Houston Bar Association. Judges provided courtesy of the Houston Bar Association’s Law Week Committee. Prizes: First Place Winner: $500 Second Place Winner: $300 Third Place Winner: $200 Teacher of First Place Winner: $100 Prizes Underwritten by Pratz Simmons Group at UBS. In addition, the first place winner and a guest, and the first place winner’s teacher, will be invited to attend an awards luncheon. The winning essay will be submitted to the State Bar contest and will be printed in an upcoming issue of The Houston Lawyer magazine. All entries should include fully completed entry form. Any entries received without the entry form will not be accepted or considered for the contest. A sample entry form is included.
