Unclear Ø Unclear with no evaluations or mixed results Serving Up MyPlate: A Yummy Curriculum Middle Childhood School-based Obesity Nutrition / Diet Physical Activity TARGET AUDIENCE This program is for students who are in 1st through 6th grade. SUMMARY Serving Up MyPlate: A Yummy Curriculum, a classroom-based program, provides teachers with educational materials to teach students about the importance of physical activity, good nutrition, and the current food guidance system - MyPlate. EVIDENCE No peer-reviewed publications evaluating the effectiveness of this program were located. COMPONENTS Serving Up MyPlate: A Yummy Curriculum is designed to improve nutrition/diet and increase physical activity by teaching youth about and encouraging them to use MyPlate. The program includes curricula for three grade ranges: grades 1 to 2, 3 to 4, and 5 to 6. The following activities are included in the curriculum: Examine and self-monitor diet and learn how to use MyPlate; Recognize foods from different food groups and understand the importance of eating from all five food groups; Identify sometimes foods that contain added sugars and/or solid fats; Design a healthy snack; and Engage in 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Lessons incorporate songs, activities, and informational games. MyPlate-themed posters and graphics are provided and can be used in the classroom, cafeteria, and on school menus. Informational handouts are available in Spanish, Chinese, French, and English and are sent home to parents. In addition, the curriculum outlines standards met in other content areas (e.g., science, language arts, health, math). PREVIOUS USE This program was pilot tested at Michener School in Adrian, Michigan, and at Immaculate Conception in Bronx, New York. CONSIDERATIONS Considerations for implementing this program include acquiring buy-in from school administrators; allowing time for teachers to plan and deliver the curriculum; ensuring the availability of computers, the internet, and a CD/MP3 player; and understanding there will be some costs associated with lesson materials, such as food items or art supplies. Electronic versions of the teacher's guides, music, posters, and parent handouts are available free online at the website in the Contact section. Copies of these items are also available and free for elementary schools participating in the National School Lunch Program or other Child Nutrition programs. Costs vary for lesson materials (e.g., food items, art supplies).
