GeologicalAssociationof CanadAasthe Joint Annual Meeting WINNIPEG'96, May 2:7-29,1996.The meeting
convenedon the campusof the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, hostedby the Departrnentof
Geological Sciences(University of Manitoba) and Manitoba Energy and Mhes. MAC thanks the Chairman,

entitled "UndersaturatedAlkaline Rocks: Mineralogy, Petrogenesis,and EconomicPotential" was organizedby
RogerMitchell, LakeheadUniversity. This Short CouryeVolume, Number24 nthe series,is availableby order
from the BusinessOffice.
The annual luncheon and award presentationsof the Mineralogical Association of Canadawere held on
Tuesday, May 28, in Pembina Hall. Terry Hogan, Vice hesident of Research,University of Manitoba,
extendeda wann welcometo MAC on behalf of the University. The Hawley Award for 1996,for the bestpaper
in Volume 33 of Thz Canadian Mineralogist, was preselted by Association PresidentRoger Mitchell to
co-authorsDavid S. O'Haniey andFredJ. Wicks for their paper"Conditionsof formation of lizardite, chrysotile,
and antigorite,Cassiar,British Columbia"(Volume33, Pafi 4, pages753-773,1995).The LeonardG. Berry
Medal for distinguishedservice to the Association was awardedto Sol Kaiman, a charter member of the
Associationand Secretaryduring its formativeyears.The citation was presentedby Vice-PresidentJim Nicholls.
The Past hesidents' Medal for excellencein researchwas awarded by Past-PresidentFred J. Wicks to
Tom Krogh, Royal Ontario Museum, for outstandingresearchin isotope geochemistryand geochronology.
The award was acceptedby Don Davis, R.O.M. Citations for these medalists are found in this Volume
of The CanndianMineralogisr. The annual Ann Sabina Award for the best amateurmineral collection had
been awardedin April to Phil Watford and Adam Gartner of the Brampton Rock and Mineral Club. The
Annual Business Meeting of the Mineralogical Association of Canada was held on Tuesday May 28'
at the University Centre, University of Manitoba. The proceedingsof the previous annual meeting held in
Victoria, B.C., in May of 1995, were approvedas published in the December 1995 issue of The Caruzdian
Mineralogist. The MAC Council met on May 26, 1996,prior to the Annual Businessmeeting.Nominationsto
Council for 1997arepublishedin the Newsletter.The auditedfinancial statementto yearendDecember31, 1995,
preparedby R. StuartHaslett,accountantwith Chartrand,Lanthier,Lemieux,SchnobCharteredAccountants,lists
printing of
hembers' equity at $442,507.00.The TreasuryReserveFund balanceof $451,585.00accommodates
six issuesper year. Council will be investigating the utilization of part of this reservefund to promote the
charitableobjectivesof the Association.The fee structureof 1997hasbeenset at $85 for Ordinary membership,
$:0 for Studentand Retired,$310for Corporateand lnstitutional subscriptions.A new monographserieswill be
established,with publication of the first book in the series,on the etymology of mineral names.During the
sabbaticalleave of Editor Robert Martin, Wallace Maclean will assistwith the processingof manuscriptsand
reviews.A Short Courseon'oAdvancesin Ore andEnvironmentalMineralogy" is in preparationby Louis Cabri,
for publication and presentationat the IMA, Toronto, 1998.The final threepostersin the "Beautifirl Minerals",
with new postcardsand card sets,are now availablefrom the businessoffice. Theseproductscan be seenon
