Welcome to Montrose Path Network North Water Viaduct, Kinnaber Links and Montrose Beach Montrose was founded by King David I in 1140 as a burgh and a port serving Angus and the Mearns. The High Street is built on a shingle ridge between the North Sea and Montrose Basin, the tidal estuary of the South Esk river. Montrose Steeple is the focal point of the town’s skyline. Montrose Harbour has traditionally been a source of trade and fishing, and Scurdie Ness lighthouse was built in 1870 to help prevent shipwrecks on the surrounding coast. A purpose built cycle path links Montrose to an impressive viaduct over the North Esk river, after which you can follow a minor road to St Cyrus beach. An alternative return route from the viaduct takes you along the riverside, and back to Montrose via Kinnaber Links or the beach. The paths in this leaflet are an excellent way to explore the varied coastal landscape around Montrose. Distance: 8 ½ miles (13½ km) round trip from town centre. 4 miles (6½ km) round trip from Broomfield. Ferryden to Scurdie Ness Lighthouse and Mains of Usan Approx time: 4 hours from town centre, 2 hours from Broomfield. A rewarding walk with views over Montrose Harbour and the mouth of the South Esk. Keep an eye out for dolphins, seals and eider ducks. Start: Terrain & accessibility: Surfaced path on the main cycle route. Mostly level, with one steeper slope to the viaduct. Unsurfaced paths and tracks through Kinnaber Links, with some kissing gates. Uneven ground, narrow steep sections and steps on the riverside path. Distance: 2 miles (3½ km) return to lighthouse from Ferryden. 3½ miles (6km) return to Mains of Usan Approx time: 1 hour return to lighthouse. 2 hours return to Mains of Usan. Start: Ferryden N.B. The beach route is impassable and unsafe at high tide and storm conditions. Please check the tide times at www.easytide.ukho.gov.uk Hillside Terrain & accessibility: Good surfaced private road until lighthouse. Moderate climb through Ferryden, then fairly level. Grass fields towards Mains of Usan, with gates. A track through open farmland, leading to Dubton and Hillside. In Hillside you can take a detour to Rosemount estate, the grounds of a former mansion house. Return the same way or via the roadside cycleway to Borrowfield. N.B. Cattle may be grazing in the fields beyond the lighthouse. Do not take your dog if calves are present. Keep it on a lead or at heel at other times. Distance: 2½ miles (4 km) round trip from Borrowfield, 7 miles (11 km) from town centre. Approx time: 1 hour 15 minutes from Borrowfield. Start: Newhame Road or Montrose High Street. Terrain & accessibility: Farm track and roadside pavements. Fairly level. Short metal walkway and uneven muddy ground at south end of track. Wherever possible, barriers such as stiles and steps have been avoided, to make paths as accessible as possible to all users, including disabled people, cyclists and horseriders. Path surfaces vary from firm purpose built paths to farm tracks and earth paths. Further details are included in the walk descriptions. Many of the paths are on working farms and estates. Please respect land management operations, take your litter home and keep you dog under proper control.
