King’s House Newsletter U11’s Squad – 7’s Tournament Dear Parents Hopefully you all received the letter I sent out last week and the reminder I sent yesterday about the parental survey we are carrying out. I am very grateful to all of you who have completed it so far, and would like to encourage the rest of you to do it as well. Last Sunday, two of our rugby teams took part in the finals of the National Rugby Competition. The weather conditions were atrocious and the boys had to endure rain which varied from heavy to torrential most of the day, and a chilly wind. Both sets of boys did very well. The U13 team (our 1st XV) made it to the semi-final where they were beaten by the eventual winners, Aldro, whilst the U10 (Year 5) team made it to the final, with some wonderful wins along the way. They ended up runners-up but played some great rugby and kept going until the end. Well done to all who played and thanks to all of you who came and supported. I was delighted to be able to attend our first Junior Department Music Tea Concert on Wednesday. These teas have been running for some time now in the Senior Department so we are very pleased that the Year 2 and Year 3 boys are now getting the same chance; we heard the piano, trumpet, violin and guitar being played and the recital culminated in a performance by the JD guitar ensemble, who were playing together for the first time. Mr Mark Turner 9 March 2012 U11’S VICTORIOUS On Tuesday afternoon the U11 7’s squad travelled to Durston House for their first 7’s tournament of the season. With the hopes of Mr Turner riding high on the outcome of this tournament, the boys travelled across the river knowing they needed to perform well! And perform well they did! In their first match against local rivals The Mall, the boys all played magnificently running in 5 tries to win 35-0. In the second match against St Martins the boys really turned on their style to record a 54-0 victory! That put us through to the semi final against Orley Farm. Despite a stoppage for a lost gum shield, which had miraculously found its way into a bystander’s pocket, the boys produced some outstanding rugby, combining pace and power with sublime handling skills to record an emphatic 36-0 victory. This put us into the final against tournament hosts Durston House. After coming through all previous rounds without conceding a point, our own expectations had grown and the boy’s excitement going into the final was evident in the way they strode onto the pitch. From minute one the result didn’t look in doubt and we managed to run in 5 tries to none to win the game 31-0. Most pleasing for me was the fact that we didn’t let the other teams cross our line at all. All of the boys in the squad can be proud of the way they represented the school in the highest manner, well done. Mr P Hardwick The Nationals – U10’s - On Sunday the U10’s took part in The National Schools rugby competition. The weather forecast was for it to be wet, and boy did they get their forecast correct. We knew that with the conditions not favouring our usual flamboyant running and passing game, we would have to work hard at securing and keeping hold of our own ball. This is something we did well all day and meant we played some very impressive rugby. Our first target was to get out of our group, something which we did relatively easily with good wins over both Bristol Grammar School and Northcote Lodge. Those wins meant we won our group and had to face St Columba’s in the quarter finals. It was a tough game made even harder by the torrential rain and mud. The game ended in a 5 all draw, however due to scoring more points than them in the group stages we advanced to the semi finals. In the Semi we faced a very strong Gayhurst side. We started brilliantly and scored three very good tries. The Gayhurst side came back at us in the second half but our defence held out, King’s House finally winning 15 – 10 and in doing so booking our place in the final against Warwick School. The final as you would expect was a physical encounter with both teams showing great defence in conditions favouring a mud wrestling contest. Unfortunately the opposition eventually managed to sneak through our defence and score a couple of tries, which meant we ended the day as the runners up of the U10 competition. A huge achievement and something I hope the boys will remember and be very proud of. Well done to all of those involved and a big thank you to all the parents for your support in very trying conditions. Mr M. McKinnon The Nationals - 1st XV - On Sunday the 1st XV went down to Epsom to take part in the National Schools Rugby Finals – the excitement of the occasion meant the horrendous weather conditions failed to dampen the boy’s enthusiasm. Having qualified two weeks previously we found ourselves in a very tough group. In our first games we beat Beechwood Park, before losing to Northcote Lodge. This left us playing Shrewsbury House in a titanic clash that was marked by brutal defence and resulted in a 0-0 draw. Our playing record meant we went through at the expense of our old friends, but put us in the semi finals against Aldro. The size of the Aldro boys at the end of a long cold day proved to be the deciding factor in the game, but the boys played with tremendous spirit. This meant the boys made it to the last four in the National Schools Rugby Tournament – an achievement that the boys can look back on with immense pride. A fantastic, but wet day!
