An Evening with
Daniel Silva
NYT #1 bestselling author will appear in
West Bloomfield during Summer Reading
The Library is sponsoring a visit from Daniel Silva
on Thursday, July 13. Silva will visit West
Bloomfield to talk about his newest book, House
of Spies, which will be released July 11.
House of Spies is the 17th installment of Silva’s
#1 New York Times bestselling series featuring
international spy, assassin and art restorer
Gabriel Allon. Hear Silva discuss how he
researches background for his books, how
his famous character has developed over
time and his writing process, which begins
by writing in pencil on yellow legal pads.
Daniel Silva was born in Kalamazoo and
grew up in California. He was earning a
master’s degree in international relations
when he received a temporary job offer from
United Press International (UPI) to help cover
the 1984 Democratic National Convention in
San Francisco. He later joined UPI full-time and
served as a Middle East correspondent in Cairo
and the Persian Gulf. In the late 1980s, Silva went
to work for CNN and became Executive Producer
of its talk show unit, responsible for shows like
Crossfire, Capital Gang and Reliable Sources.
His secret ambition, though, was to write novels.
His first book, The Unlikely Spy, was an instant
bestseller and Silva left CNN to write full time. All
of Silva’s books have been New York Times and
international bestsellers.
The Library has many of Daniel Silva’s books in
multiple formats. Search the Online Library for
titles. Tune in for updates about Daniel Silva’s
appearance by liking the Library on Facebook or
following us on Twitter.

Summer Reading for Pre-Readers
Parents are a child's first teachers. The Library is a child’s first classroom.
This summer, help your baby, toddler or preschooler develop important
early literacy skills and build a strong foundation for future reading success
by joining the Library’s Read to Me program. Children from birth to five
years old and their parents can read together and earn up to four books
from the Summer’s End Book Fair based on the number of hours read.
Add fun learning experiences to
your family’s summer activities
with Summer Challenges, designed
to help pre-readers develop essential
pre-reading and other important
skills. Summer Challenges include
a variety of talking, singing, reading,
writing, playing and counting
activities that parents and children
can incorporate into everyday
routines.
Register for Summer Reading
and pick up the Read to Me
activity log at the Main Library
or Westacres Branch or online at

summer.
The Library partners with parents to help
pre-readers develop early literacy skills. Our
reading professionals are always ready to
help find just the right books for any age.
WBSD Required Summer Reading
Students at West Bloomfield School District middle schools and high school
have required reading assignments over the summer. Both the Main
Library and Westacres Branch have multiple copies of all required and
optional books on the reading lists. See book displays at both Library
buildings. Some titles are also available as eBooks or eAudiobooks to
download.
For lists of the titles, stop by a Library Information Desk or go to WB-Hub,
the Library’s website for teens at www.westbloomfieldlibrary.org/wb-hub.
“One of the books Stella chose for Summer Reading and Summer Challenge last year was
from the Library’s recommended list for K-1 grades. After reading Rain Fish by Lois Ehlert, Stella
decided to recreate every fish in the book. She dug into the recycling bin and searched other places for
materials. She had to make decisions and problem solve to come up with everything she needed. A
week of scavenger hunts and hard work created a sea of exquisite fish. Thank you for recommending
this lovely book that turned a regular summer week into a fun summer learning experience that we
won’t forget!
Stella Saxe, inspired by author Lois Ehlert, used her
imagination and resourcefulness to recreate each
Rain Fish during the 2016 Summer Challenge.

“The Library’s summer reading program enhanced Stella's love for books and reinforced her
excitement to learn to read going into 1st grade.” —Kori Saxe, Keego Harbor resident
How Does Summer Reading Affect Children?
Reading boosts brain power.
No matter what their age, children who read – or who are read to –
improve cognitive, comprehension and vocabulary skills. This is true
year-round, but summer reading is especially important.
Summer reading leads to school
year success.
Reading over the summer helps students return to classrooms in the
fall better prepared to achieve academically. When parents read to
pre-readers, they help their children develop early literacy skills and
be ready to learn to read in kindergarten.
Children and teens benefit from
seeing their parents read.
Parents are reading role models. When parents and grandparents
participate in Summer Reading, they show by example that reading is
an enjoyable activity at every age.
Shared family reading experiences
have lasting effects.
This summer, the entire family can work together on reading and
learning activities in the Library’s new “Family Challenge” category.
Talking about books and sharing challenge activities reinforce the
message that reading and learning are important. Sharing reading
fun as a family creates positive feelings and memories about reading
that can last a lifetime.
To have the greatest effect, start reading June 17. Create a Summer Reading account at
www.westbloomfieldlibrary.org/summer and be ready to read and complete challenges when Summer Reading kicks off June 17.
“The Library makes it easy to keep kids reading and learning over the summer. There’s a focus
on academics to prevent ‘summer slide,’ while making Summer Reading and Summer Challenges
interesting and fun so kids want to be involved. Earning books and prizes is nice, but my 1st and
2nd graders loved logging into their Summer Reading account and seeing where they ranked on
the Leaderboard. The competition became motivating. As a parent, I liked that reading and
challenge activities were all manageable. We could easily incorporate activities into everyday
routines. We are looking forward to new reading and learning experiences this summer!”
—Holly Bailey, West Bloomfield mom

“My two girls love the Library and all the
wonderful summer programs and events.
My older daughter reads better after every
Summer Reading program. My little one
loves the Read to Me activities and coming

once-in-a-lifetime event – the next eclipse like this won’t occur until
January 2316.
Join local NASA Solar System Ambassador Ken Bertin as he explains what
eclipses are, why this one is so special and how you can safely observe
an eclipse. This is a great program for the entire family.
No registration is required.

Nancy Pearl to Appear at Book Club Reception
Nancy Pearl and Book Kits
More than 300 West Bloomfield community
book clubs are registered with the Library.
Services available to book groups include the
Library’s “Book Group To-Go” kits. Each kit
has 10 paperback copies of a book popular
with discussion groups, a discussion guide,
book reviews and biographical information
about the author.
The idea for the kits originated with
Nancy Pearl.
Nancy Pearl is a rock star to readers. They love her reading recommendations, listen to her reviews
and commentary on NPR’s Morning Edition, watch her monthly TV show “Book Lust with Nancy Pearl,”
friend her on Facebook, follow her on Twitter and pin her book suggestions on Pinterest boards.
Pearl draws standing-room only crowds to libraries and bookstores to listen to her talk about books,
authors and the pleasures of reading. On October 3, Nancy Pearl will be in West Bloomfield to talk
about her debut novel, GEORGE & LIZZIE, as well as some of her favorite picks for book clubs. GEORGE
& LIZZIE, the story of an unlikely marriage at a crossroads, will be released September 5.
Pearl grew up in Detroit and earned her Master of Library Science degree from the University of
Michigan. She worked as a librarian and bookseller in Detroit, Tulsa and Seattle. In 1998, Pearl created
the community-wide reading program, “If All of Seattle Read the Same Book,” to promote dialog and
literacy. The idea spread across the country. The West Bloomfield Library and other members of the
Metro Net Library Consortium have sponsored “Everyone’s Reading…”, a one book, one community
program since 2002.
Reception for Book Clubs with Nancy Pearl
October is National Book Club Month. Celebrate books, book clubs and reading with members of
community book groups and Nancy Pearl.
Tuesday, October 3 at 7 PM Main Library Meeting Room
Hear the latest about Nancy’s picks for book group discussions and learn more about Nancy’s first
novel. All attendees will receive a complimentary copy of GEORGE & LIZZIE. Watch for registration
details in the Library’s fall newsletter and the All About Books eNewsletter.
West Bloomfield Library Director Clara N.
Bohrer toured the newly-opened Seattle
Public Library when she served as
conference chair for the Public Library
Association’s 2004 National Conference.
Nancy Pearl was her tour guide. Pearl
mentioned the kits she had developed as a
way to support Seattle book clubs. Bohrer
brought the idea back to West Bloomfield.
The Library now has 65
kits for community book
clubs, including 10 kits
with large print books.
Most Book Group To-Go
titles are also available in
audiobook, eBook and
eAudiobook formats.
Kits are refreshed each
year. See the new kits
at the Reception for
Book Clubs. Current titles are listed in the
Library’s Book Group Services brochure. Pick
up a copy at the Library or go to
www.westbloomfieldlibrary.org, click
“Services” and then “Book Groups.”
Rep. McCready Thanked
During National Library Week in April, State Rep. Mike McCready, 40th District, was recognized
and thanked by the Library Board of Trustees for his support of bills that protect voter-approved,
dedicated public library millages. Rep. McCready’s support will help ensure that Michigan public
libraries can continue to invest in and provide valuable services to Michigan residents.
Rep. McCready was also recognized as a 2016 Michigan Library Champion by the Michigan Library
Association (MLA).
